How do you clean your guns?
I am wondering, do you spray it with gun scrubber, break free, etc... or do you use patches, brushes, mops, solvents and oils? I only use gun scrubber on my shotgun and duty rifle (M14, designed for abuse!) but I thoroughly clean and oil mine after every trip to the range (or farm, or dump, or after killing a lame animal that's been hit by a car, or whatever...) with the "kit".
Some of the other threads I've checked out got me to wondering...

My family uses Eezox. It's a cleaner and lubricant that doesn't dry out the metal as much as gun scrubber does. It also tends to clean better. But it's more expensive.

I use a combo of products for my XD9:
-For the barrel I use the Copper brush that came with my XD, patches, and "Rem Oil". -For the rails, springs, etc. I use "Gun Oil" by Birchwood Casey. -For the slide exterior I use "Sheath" by Birchwood Casey (its a rust preventative) and then follow that up with a coating of Blue Wonder "Armadillo" For my 12 gauge, just Rem Oil and a shot gun cleaning fiber-wand. |

hmmm here's what I do after every shooting session. Probably a bit excessive but it works.
1) Disassemble (just field stripped) 2) Spray inside of slide, inside and out side of barrel, guild rod and recoil spring down with Hoppies Elite. 3) Spray rag with Hoppies Elite wipe frame clean paying special attention to the locking block, and sear. 4) Run bronze brush through bore several times. 5) Toothbrush the inside of the slide. Paying particular attention to the breach face and slide rails. 6) Wipe all the parts down good with that Hoppies Elite rag. Be sure to get all solvent off. 7) Pull bore snake through barrel a few times. 8) Push lightly oiled patch though barrel. 9) one(1) drop of oil on: -muzzle end of barrel top and bottom -on the barrel just in front of breach block top -back end of the slide rails -firing pin just in front of sear block. -locking block where the barrel slides on it smeared around with finger 10) I then reassemble the barrel, spring and recoil guild rod with two drops of oil on the guild rod. 11) A small amount of grease (red lithium) on the sear, slide lock sear, and trigger disconnect bar were it slides against the slide. 12) Reassemble pistol and cycle slide several type to work all the lubricant around. 13) Wipe any excess lubrication off the gun with a clean rag 14) Wipe gun down with a piece of lamb's wool treated with RIG grease before it goes in gun cabinet. Gun runs every time without a hitch. mcb |

First, I check to make sure the firearm is unloaded!!!!!!!!
Then, I field strip my XD-9 SC, use hoppes #9 to scrub the barrel with a brass/copper brush, use a tooth brush to scrub slide and parts and then spray all the parts, less the frame, with brake cleaner bought from Wal-mart. I then blow all the parts off and relube using CLP on the slide and a drop of Rem Oil on the frame parts. Reassemble then fire 2 rounds to make sure it functions properly because this is my CCW Gun. |

Here is a pretty representative description of my usual routine (complete w/photos). It was put together pre-XD so please excuse my lack of tasty XD goodness in the photos.

I field strip the gun & spray everything insided & out with an aerosol nitro solvent. Right now Outers is the brand of choice because Wal-Mart has it for 3 bucks. Next step is to brush everything I can reach with an M16 brush. Brush & patch the bore, spray again to "rinse" off the crud, shake & set aside to air dry. Lube & assemble.
