I personally don't clean out the lettering, only the serations for gripping. Works for me. Haven't had any rust issues on my ccw sc9mm yet. I use a similar method..but instead throw the slide in the oven (around 300 degrees) for a few minutes until the slide is warm/hot but still able to be handled and then I remove the entire chunk of Armadillo out and let the heat of the slide melt the armadillo onto it..works great!
