Cutting service grip down to subcompact size????

I know I saw a post about this a while back. I am thinking of doing this to mine. With the slip on extensions available I could still have a full size pistol when I want, but have the SC grip for CCW.
Does anyone have a link to when this was previously talked about. Who has done this and what are the plus and minuses? Anyone know who does this mod or how hard it is to do yourself? I consider myself pretty handy, but sawing away on a $400 gun makes me nervous.
Thanks in advance.

I've done it to mine. For me it makes me feel better knowing that the grip of my XD doesn't stick out as far when I carry. The only negative so far is all the crap I get when they see it or I tell them whiat I did. They look at me like I'm stupid for doing so. Oh well, it's my gun and have no plans on getting rid of it so they can kiss my....

Does it not screw up the balance of the gun at all? I don't really know how important that is, I think I'd have to feel the result in my hands to understand.

Had my service grip cut down by David Bowie Concepts, I think that's the name of the business. It's in Ohio? Look up a search and I have pictures that compare the SC to the cut down service. I find no disadvantage with the 4" barrel and SC grip, in fact after I had the grip cut down and tried it for a couple of months, I sold my SC, no need for it. I did pick up a 15 round mag with the extension on it so I can have the best of both worlds if I want it. I do not carry it with the extended mag, I just use it as a range mag and/or backup mag. The balance IMHO is not affected with the grip being cut down, I do believe the balance is quite good. Good luck on your quest.

Adding a Pearce finger extension to the bottom will make it better to handle as well.

I'd love to do this to my XD.

I have thought about this mod as well. I just can't justify it yet. Maybe if I get the money for a Service 45APC i'll give it a go, but that's just more mags to buy also, and sleeves. I love the Idea though. I think with a cutdown Hogue handall and a peirce extension on a chopped service would look SWEET!

If anyone has pic's of this setup, i'd love to see it.
