Slide not locking/1 FTE - XDTalk Forums

So I was at the range this morning and fired a mag and the slide didn't lock back. So then I put one round in three different magazines and sometimes it did lock others it didn't. And one FTE the casing was sticking straight up if there was a bullet in it it would be facing straight up into the sky. I brought it to the range worker (all of whom are at least NRA instructors) and he took a look at the gun and the magazines and didn't see anything wrong with the gun. So I go back into the range and try to fire one handed, same thing three mags one round each, and the slide locked back every single time for about 10+ rounds.

So...I figured my thumb must be holding the slide lock, I'm using the thumbs forward grip where my strong hand thumb is on top of my support hand thumb. I've really just started using this grip only fired about 300~ rounds using it and never had a problem with it until now.

Any ideas how to fix this? I am much more accurate with this grip compared to the grip I sorta made up myself and previously used.

I dont know what size hands you have so I am just winging it on a correction but...

You could try holding your strong hand thumb down with your weak hand thumb. That is, you place the weak hand thumb OVER the strong hand thumb and it pulls it down away from the slide and the slide release, getting it out of the way. Many people use this grip with success. You will still have a very firm grip on the pistol, indeed maybe a better grip on the pistol, than you do now.

The thing is, if you werent doing this before now, then you changed something and started interfering with the pistol's operation. You might be able to just correct this without too much trouble without changing your grip that much. If you have really meaty hands then the crossed thumb grip might be better for you anyway.

I had this problem at the range with my 9 service and 9 sc. i talked to the guys there and they said the problem was happening most likely because the range reloads were not of the same quality they normally were. We were seeing FMJ replaced with JHP because the reload company was so light on stock. The guys at the range said they had an idea that they were skimping on the powder. All made sense to me, problem has since been gone. Presumably because the reloaded ammo has gotten back to normal.

I shoot with the grip you are speaking of, and have never had a problem because of the grip.

The range staff member said it could be the ammo, I was using WWB and always have and never really had a problem with them. The thing is though when i fired one handed it worked fine. So i guess its due to my grip. Only thing will the fact that I was touching the slide release cause a FTE.

I just purchased an xd9sc and the same thing is happening to me. I have tried Reloads, Wolf, PMC, and Remington ammo so far and no slide lock.

FYI - The very first two mags ever shot was with WOLF and it DID lock. Two other friends shot it tonight also with no slide lock.

I have some Hornady PD rounds that should be hotter than any I've shot to date, but I hate to waste the expensive ammo just to test for slide lock.

Very happy with fit an finish and accuracy so far. Have maybe 350 rnds down the barrel so far.

Well I hope for you it was temporary like it was for me, when our ammo got a little hotter it went away. I hope you are seeing the same thing. Good luck either way.
