.40 vs .45 capacity question
I was wondering if anyone could explain why the .45 is able to hold one more round than my .40 service when the .45 is a bigger round. It doesn't make sense to me.

The original XD .40 was based on the 9mm frame which means it could only hold 12 rnd. The XD 45 was a different frame with slightly different dimensions and build from the ground up for .45 which means it was more effiecent in space. The XDM was build for .40 so it has this same benefit of being better at allocating space to the .40 which the 9mm benefits from since it is a smaller round.

There you have it. Couldn't have said it better myself. I actually had this conversation with my wife last night after American Rifleman had a little blurp on the XD 45.

A wider magazine allows the double stacked rounds to be distributed outward or sideways rather than higher or taller.
