quick question on reassembly
I broke the gun down per instruction of the manual, cleaned it per instruction of the "Blue Wonder Gun Care Kit" and the instructions with it. I'd like some tips eventually on specific parts to make sure are clean and how some of you like to do it. My question is about when I put the gun back together. I just reversed the steps from the manual, and they really aren't difficult. My question is once I got it back together, with the slide locked back the barrel moves around ever so slightly. I don't know if I just didn't notice it before or if I put it together wrong, but I figured I'd ask to make sure. Thanks in advance.

If you followed the manual's disassembly instructions, you field stripped your XD. I don't have specific instructions on how to go about cleaning specific parts, although I'm somewhat sure Ajames sight might have information reguarding that. Speaking of which, my XD is due for a field strip, oiling, and cleaning soon.
About the barrel, it is a free floating barrel, so when the slide is locked back it will be loose and when the slide returns to it's initial position, the barrel automatically realigns itself.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll search and see who Ajames is or if I can find his site. Thanks again.

The barrel is loose when the slide is back because its a locked breach design. When the slide is back, the barrel is unlocked. Take the slide off and take your recoil assembly off and leave the barrel in the slide, try moving it back and forth and you will see that it accually slips up to lock into the slide. When the gun is assembled, the barrel also engages on the bottom to the locking block. This is a superior design for strength as compared to a simple blowback system as seen on cheaper guns like a Bersa.

Yep it's a locked breach design, just like the 1911 and most autos out there. When the slide is locked back, the barrel will be a little loose, so that the slide can move freely to the rear without unnecessary friction.
It is not "Free Floated". That is a term used in the rifle domain, to identify a barrel the doesn't touch the stock at any place. This is a technique used to keep the harmonics of the vibrating barrel when the shot is fired very constant, and thus making the rifle more accurate. Hope this helps, Alex. |
