Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I've been lurking for a couple a weeks and this seems to be a very knowledgable and interesting board. I'm hoping to purchase an XD at the next gun show in town. I'm set on the XD in general, I just haven't decided on whether to get a service or sub-compact and 9mm vs. .40 S&W. I plan to use this weapon for both general shooting (shooting cans for fun and what not), a little at the range and for ocasional concealed carry (mostly when traveling). Anyone have some insight as to why you picked what you did? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the gun nut club!!
I had the 9mm ported model and loved it, will probably get another to go with the new 45ACP being delivered tomorrow. I picked the 9mm originally because of cheap ammo that you can find most anywhere. The 9mm round can be loaded hotter then normal, +p or even occasionally +p+, this along with the different and new bullets they have can give great ballistic power. The recoil on the 9 is light, and can be adjusted (as can with your guide rod and spring being replaced with a Don/s guide rod or similar product. With the 9mm, you also can have 15 to 17 rounds. 15 with a S.A. magazine or 17 with a modified Beretta magazine. Some magazines out there are even capable of holding 30 rounds. Not good for concealed carry tho, it leaves a tell tale print just a wee bit. With the availability of the new 45ACP XD gun, there will be a lot of XD guns being traded in, this might afford an opportunity for you to pick a used 9mm or 40 or 357 or 45GAP on the cheap. Any other questions, feel free to ask. The only stupid questions are the unasked questions. Again, Welcome. |

I have both XD-40 Service and XD-9 SC. Why? because I couldn't make up my mind. Heh! I bought the .40 first and a couple of months later got the 9mm when a Bi-tone SC showed up at the gunshop. They are both great shooters. If I was told I could only keep one, I think I would keep the XD-40 Service. The difference in ammo price is not a biggie for me, but I don't get to shoot every week like some of these guys.

There is no reason...its just pure madness. Gotta have more! Shooting those cans gets boring, find an IDPA or USPSA club in your area and do some action pistol competition shooting. Its as addicting as the guns!

Even if the SC were available, I would not have purchased it because it was smaller than the multi-purpose gun that I wanted (target, IDPA, CCW). Reading the posts that members put in this forum about the SC, I would say that my biases against the SC were probably prejudicial (in the true sense of the word). It appears that the SC is a very capable target pistol - in spite of its smaller size. Caliber? I already had a 9mm - so I wanted to try a .40S&W. Also - I have read that military and LEOs don't want 9mm - they want .40 or larger. I pay attention to those reports. My holster choice was a bit difficult, because I just don't like IWB (inside waistband) holsters. Mine is a strong-side open top Hume belt holster that keeps the pistol snug to my side. Whatever pistol you purchase, I cannot recommend any outside the waistband paddle holsters for this pistol. The holster that comes with the XD is good for IDPA, but it causes the pistol to stand so far from the body that others can see the print even when I'm wearing a sports coat. Here's a link discussing this holster: http://www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic.php?t=22769 I'm very happy with the XD40 service, and carry it always with no issues regarding discomfort. I'm just used to it now. Highly recommended. -Mike |

How did you work a deal through an FFL and have the firearm directly sent to you at your home? Complete details certainly would clear up a few things for me. Ed |
