Which XD?

Looking at buying my first handgun. Came across the SA XD and love it. I shoot my friend's 40 every once in a while, but am interested in buying the XD 45acp.

I am not going to be carrying it often and use it mostly for target shooting. Would you recommed the 40 tactical or the 45acp service model for me? I am thinking of the 40 tactical for better target accuracy but the 45acp is just bad ass? Any insight/recommendations?

My guess is that you are fairly new to the handgun scene, and that either choice will shoot measurably better than you do. Get the one that "trips yer trigger", so to speak.

Welcome to the forum.
.45 ammo is around $10.50 per 50
.40 ammo is around $16.00 per 100

Either one is a good man stopper but its hard to argue with a .45 slug.
.45 is also a very accurate round, not that .40 cant be though.

Consider the 9mm for target purposes.

At least in my area...

$4.86 WWB 9mm
$3.86 CCI Blazer 9mm

How about a .40 then a drop in barrel for 9mm for targets? best of both worlds?

My next weapon will be a XD40, with the conversion (9mm) and maybe even the sig .357 barrel later on. Never shot the .357, but I think it would be fun!

You should consider getting a .22 pistol to start.
Ruger Mark II or 22/45 or perhaps a Browning Buckmark.
You can work on many disciplines and develop great fudamentals at much lesser cost and far greater ease.

Pistol = $150
500 rounds = $9

A great way to spend the time between now and when the 45acp starts to become readily available.
Learn cleaning, muzzle awarenes, hand positions, trigger skills, eye and sight work, follow up shots, multiple targets... lots of stuff; and you'll be far more satisified with the results as you'll quickly have nice shot groups with a .22.

FINALLY got my XD45. What an amazing pistol. Its beautiful. Put 100 rounds through it yesterday at ~8 yards and not one problem. It seems to be shooting a little low (consistently) but its probably my aim. Easily fixable.

I'll get some pics up soon.

I didn't even know that was an option!! OH so many questions for my local smithy now. Man, that really would be the best of both worlds.

are there any disadvantages??
