CCW stands for Concealed Carry (permit, license, weapon) depending on the way your state refers to it.

CCW is Carrying Concealed Weapons. Depending on your state, it can be called a CPL or CHL (Concealed Pistol or Handgun License) or just simply concealed carry. CCW is simply the title of most classes that are required before you can apply for a license.

but why is being refered to in conjunction with testing, you just go and tell whomever in your state you apply with, that you want one. They do a background check and a week later its in your mailbox. Is this different other places??

Some states require you to prove you can actually shoot, you have to go thru a course and hit like 7 out of 10 shots or whatever. In Montana, you goto the sheriffs office, fill out the paperwork, pay your $25 and they run a FBI background check and you get your CCP (concealed carry permit), every 5 years you renew it and all is well.

handgun newbie,
You were on the right page to begin with.

For example, one may ask, "Does the XD Service model make a good CCW?" (Concealed Carry Weapon)

In Texas, to "carry" you must obtain a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) and that requires taking a course that involves study of laws/regulations and an actual range shooting test. The class is often offered in two 4-hour sessions or one 8-hour session. Other states requirements vary.

Here in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, carrying
concealed maybe habit forming with your CCDW
license (Concealed Carry Deadly Weapon).

We worked hard and long to get the designation
as it INCLUDES ALL deadly weapons, not just
firearms alone. Packing.org explains a bunch.

Nevada calls it CFP -- Concealed Firearm Permit -- but when you go turn in the paperwork, the window says CCW. I just thought it was funny cuz the CFP class instructor railed for 10 minutes about the difference: Nevada permit only licenses you to conceal a Firearm, not a Weapon (ie: knife, sword, grenade, laser cannon ). Then I go turn in the paperwork and they call it CCW anyway. Oh well
