I have carried a 1911 45 for duty (still do) for the past 18 years out of my 27 year career as a LEO. I now have two XD9 Tacticals (I shoot USPSA). I've been a rangemaster since 1982 and have been exposed to all sorts of data & training regarding "stopping power" & etc.
Bottom line: I would not feel under gunned with the XD9. Not with today's loads. As others have stated, in your situation the 9mm is a good choice because practice rounds are cheap (Wal Mart). The more you shoot, the better you become and the happier you will be. Getting a XD9 is a no-brainer problem for you.....How many & which model is!!! In either case....ENJOY!! |

You had a Q re 9mm vs 40 S&W recoil. I'm an LEO Firearms Instructor and get to fire lots of different pistols, so in one day I can compare recoils of most calibers. The 40 S&W has this sharp-snappy recoil. I actually prefer the pooosshh of a 45 ACP. For soft recoil, buy the 9mm.
The 9mm allows you to carry more ammo. My duty gear = 3 mags plus one in the chamber equals 49 rounds. Contrast that when I was a rookie in 1980, carrying a S&W Model 15 with 18 rounds of 38 plus P. |
