Go to a retailer who has them and measure,or go to www.gunvault.com and get the specs.I have mine on the floor in the middle row of our Expedition. It is covered with assorted kid stuff like coloring book, umbrella case, towel etc.Things that will not impede the access.Good luck......Herman.

I've got an off brand, but it is Cal. D O J certified. It's got a 4 button pad, little interior LED light, and an alarm you can turn on and off. It's also got a removable bolt-down plate, or you can bolt the safe itself down. It's not a real heavy duty safe, I've got a 12 gun safe for that, but I keep it next to the bed w/my loaded XD 40. It serves its purpose until I can get something better.

Fingerprint access is hard to beat. I have this one--works great, very fast, very safe.

http://www.exploreproducts.com/biosecurehandgunsafe.htm

Remember, when the BG's coming down the hall toward your bedroom and your wife is losing it, your fine motor skills aren't going to be what they usually are (first thing to go). You don't wanna get that combination wrong--you don't have time. Push one button, press your thumb down on the pad and presto--open. There's a key that can always override, and if the battery dies you can plug a 9V into an auxiliary location to power it so you can get it open to change the real batteries (2 9V's).

I highly recommend it.

I REALLY wanted the GunVault, but they were out of stock everywhere for about 4 months, so I got this one. Not quite as nice as the GV, but it does the job very well. It comes with a bolt-down plate that can be easily disconnected from the INSIDE ONLY. They sell additional plates, so you can take it from the nightstand to the Motorhome, etc.... .

Not sure of the current supply situation on GunVaults, now.
Yep, this one works just great. Don't see the point in spending the extra bucks for the gunvault frankly. It's heavy, solid, doesn't feel cheap at all. I'd say it's advisable to bolt it down, because the lid swings open with an authoritative snap, enough to lift the front off of it's surface.

It's big enough to fit my XD with two spare mags and my P3AT at the same time.

Overall, a great buy.

the point of having a fingerprint access vault is to reduce the time it takes to retrieve your weapon and also to reduce the chances of fumbling and forgetting your combination but it seems that you'll be in a lot more trouble if your finger print analysis vault malfunctions or if your battery dies.

Too bad the rabid liberal media and politicians are not aware that many who have guns are responsible and take safety seriously. But hey.....they don't let the truth get in the way of a "headline grabber".I salute you all for your ideas and responsibility on this issue......Herman.

Does this one work if you have a cut on your thumb or a blister?
The security system where my wife works has the finger print system and has problems with the cuts and also skin oils on the lens. I just wonder if these safes are similar, they also seem a little high in price . I use a gunvault but am always looking for something better.

On the website it indicates that you can program it for three different fingerprints. I guess the best thing to do would be program it with three of your fingers in case one is cut or blistered.

Good Idea

I've got one of the small "Gun Vault" brand safes it has served me well for at least 8 years. It does require 8 AA batteries but you can change the finger combonation to whatever you like. Mine has four buttons on the top and can be opened in half a second or so even in the dark. It has a key overide so if the batteries die you can access it. I like it very well. And can highly recommend it.
