Which grain in .40 ?
Which gr. of .40 would be the best choice in a defensive round? I mostly shoot 180gr. in my service model. My thinking was the heavier the better, but I read someplace that the 165gr. would have a higher velocity thus being more lethal. Any thoughts?

Either one will get the job done. The 180 will tend to penetrate a little more.
I say buy some 180, buy some 165, and see which you think you shoot better! -stunks |

I prefer the 165's mostly because the 180's are a slightly fatter bullet toward the tip, and the slide lock "thingy" on the .40 is a little too long. Rounds coming up in the mag have a habit of causing a premature slide lock.
'Course I could be the only one...

....clears throat.....
Is there not an entire section for AMMO posts? ......Ammo Can.... ....clears throat........ Not to be a jerk or anything. The .40 Caliber round is designed to do one thing.....put people down fast, either weight will do the trick.

I would say get the ones you know will feed the best. 180grs wont help if it dont feed. Buy a box of each and shoot them both and ask your self these questions.
Do they feed? How was the recoil of each and which did you like better? Which was the more accurate of the two. |

I would, but for warranty issues.
The 165's work great for me, so I don't sweat it.

I actually keep 165 gr Gold Dots in my P99 as a home defense weapon, though I've been thinking about switching to 180s as they just FEEL cool when you fire them, different, I guess! I still think I'm indifferent between the two.
And hey, can't we all use a little more penetration??? -stunks |
