Metal wool for cleaning/polishing?

Does anyone use either steel or bronze wool for cleaning and polishing their firearms?

I've used #000 steel wool for polishing the feed ramp in my XD9 and it worked great, but I was worried about getting the little steel "lint" in places it shouldn't be. I've heard bronze or brass wool is safer since it's softer than steel, but I don't want to start going down the wrong road.

I use #0000 steel wool often to clean parts that aren't coated, not just on guns, but anything that's polished or bare... it does a pretty good job of getting grime off and clearing up any light scratches... if you're worried about the dust, don't use it while the gun is assembled to prevent contamination on springs and such, and run a cleaning cloth through it a few times to pick it up.
