tange

all I can call it is the tange that sticks up in the center of the internal mag. in the center, came off the other day. this weapon is for our Legion rifle squad for funerals., I took the weapon apart and was able to put it back on but it is really loose, I know it has had alot of use over the years but my question is ,is it suppose to be loose fitting . this is the vertical part that sticks up and I believe it kicks the stripper clip out when empty. I have been nominated (drafted) as the armorer because I am the youngest (59) person in the legion that can take down, clean, and put back together the M1 Garand. the rest are either a bit older or afraid to try working on them.
thank you

Go to the springfield armory site and look at and down load the M1 Garand manual. That might help you with what it's called and what it does. It sounds to me like your talking about the follower but I could definately be wrong. Your loosing me with the term stripper clip. M1's do not use stripper clips. They use en-bloc clips.
If I had to guess you probably could use a new follower or possibly a follower arm or perhaps both.

Mine also does quite a few military funerals at a National Cemetary where it could do anywhwere from 1 to 14 funerals in a day. The blanks can make a rifle very dirty rather quickly. Rifles that are used and not cleaned on a regular basis shooting blanks can play hell on the parts.

The "thinge" in the center of the magazine well is the follower arm and the follower assembly. The follower arm is under spring tension and pushes the rounds up for feeding by the bolt. The follower assembly is that part on the end of the follower arm that slides in two channels on either side of the receiver legs. In its center is another piece that sticks up like a spine, and it does slide back and forth sideways loosely in the assembly.

The thing that ejects the empty en bloc clip is a spring shaped like a heavy paper clip with one side opened up and is part of the trigger group.

Pictures might help if you are still having problems.

Manuals are available on line.

I went to the springfield site and looked at the manuel, it is the follower that has the piece that sticks up see figure 21-1 on the guide page 21. I got it back attached to the follower but it is loose, is this normal?
thank you

The piece in the center of the follower that sticks up is supposed to move back and forth but comming out has me a little concered. That's not normal. If you have a gun show comming to your area anytime soon there are usually more than a couple venders selling M1 parts.
