That is sad....you have my condolences.
However, think of how happy a new (to them) Garand will make someone! Think of it as sharing firearm-happiness!

Sorry to hear Frenchy. I'd still have to keep it, hang it on a wall and tell the granchildren that this is part of the reason you live in the country you do with all it's freedoms and not speak German. M1 Garands and Carbines are not just rifles there our history.

I agree Bluto, but I've always been one to not hold on to guns that I can't shoot. Even my little Ruger 10/22 gives me some discomfort. I have no problems with handguns, however. I may look to replacing the M1 with a new XDm-45.

I agree Frenchy and that holds true for every rifle/ pistol I own except for the M1. Like I mentioned that's history and should be looked apon in a different light. Mines on a never sell or trade list. When I pass on it is destined to be put in a proposed small muesum at the new Washington Crossing National cemetery where it mostly does military funerals at the present time.
I have to be honest it is kind of kool to use this old weapon to still serve the country and it's Vets.

I personally would hold onto it brother, my plan is to get one from the CMP and if it came down to not being able to shoot I would pass it to a family member

The M1 Garand was meant to be used right handed but I shoot live rounds through it using both shoulders. I am a liitle ambidexterious though by nature but more left handed. Not all people are and asking them to switch shoulders is totally out of the question.
