I use H4895 in all my Garands. I only shoot 150 to 165 grain bullets in them.

47 - 48 gr surplus 4895
WW 147 gr FMJ
CCI #34 primer
HXP 74 brass
The 48 gr load chronographs at 2626 fps.
These loads cycle the action well and are easy on the gun.
New IMR4895 is slightly faster than the surplus 4895 I have, so I would recommend reducing these loads by 1.0 gr.

Check the last or current Hornady manual. They have appropriate laods for the M! & M1A. I stick w/ 147gr-168gr & med burners like 4895, AA2240, etc. Keep your loads 10% off std. 308 or 06 loads, use med burners & bullets under 180gr & you'll be fine.

I've been looking at 168 gr Sierra HPBT MK's and IMR 4895 using 46.2 gr and 44.2 gr with trimmed, full length resized brass and CCI #34 primers. Seems like the 44.2 is holding a group a little bit better. Both are fairly tame for the rifle.

Been testing the following load that seems to do well.
I do not have a chrono, but best group patterned was 3 shot < 1" at 100 yards
Hornady 150 gr BTHP
45.5 grains Ramshot TAC
Federal 210M primer

Hornady 150 gr FMJ
CCI #34 primer
HXP brass
Easy on the rifle and very accurate. Camp Perry load.

Reloading for the Garand
You can't go wrong with once fired USGI match cases. Even old match GI cases from the 1960s are fine. Full length size, trim, lightly chamfer and clean the primer pockets. (Note USGI match case primers are not crimped). The formula calls for Remington 9 1/2 large rifle primers, 46.5 grains of IMR 4895 and a Sierra 168gr. HPBT match bullets. This load has won many matches for seasoned shooters.
Need a hunting load? Just substitute Hornady 165 gr. SPBT hunting bullets.

There are well proven loads listed in reloading manuals and specific Garand published loading data. There isn't any advantage to vary from them.
