Haven't shot in over 20 years and did surprisingly better than I thought I would.
250 rounds, Some of the flyers were my fault (some I blame on the guy in the stall next to me and whatever cannon he was shooting;))

Let me preface this by saying, carrying 100 rounds of .45 ACP in pack ain't as bad as people say...

We went camping this weekend, and the SA XD45 Tactical was in my Bianchi M9 (they make it for 5" bbls, and it fits like a CHAMP!). So we're setting up pop bottles at 35-40 yards, and just making them spin off the branches. Finally? I kneel, take aim, and shoot for the branch... WHAP!

Splits it perfectly! Yep! Shocked! It may be luck? But I'm claiming it!

A final wipe down with a towel, a mag of Federal Hydra Shocks back in, and back in the holster. All the newbies who haven't shot a pistol before were commenting on how comfortable it shoots. :D

well I finally got it and took it to the range today, this pistol surpassed all my expectations. I only put about 500 rounds through it but I had no FTF or FTE and I was shooting winchester white box "walmart" ammo, and it shot great very accurate, and pointed great, I love this gun, I would easily put it above any of my other guns, "taurus, beretta" but anyway this gun is amazing. anyone who is considering an xd, get it. any other xd service model owners please tell me any ways you have customized your gun cuz I am always looking to better an already great pistol. btw mine is a xd9 service model 4 inch barrel with a stainless slide. I am looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Well, I finally got to the range this morning and had the chance to do a little shooting. I'll start off with the XD-45. This is only the second trip to the range for this gun and all in all it is a good shooter. However I am having hollow point issues. 5 factory mags and every one about the 6th or 7th round nose dives. I talked to my gunsmith and he took one of the mags and bent the spring up so the front of the folower is a little stiffer. He marked the mag and the next time I go shooting I will see if that fixes it. I did shoot 200 rounds of WWB round nose with NO problems feeding at all.

XD-9. This is one of the new ones I bought last Saturday and Monday ordered 3 Mec-Gar 18 round mags for. Using all mags and 200 rounds of WWB ammo there was NO problems feeding or ejecting with any mags so the Mec-gar's so far are a keeper! I also put 100 rounds of Hornady 124 gr T.A.P. through it and no problems at all!!! well, there was one problem, I ran out of ammo!!! loololol

Last but not least is my new Ruger LCP. I put 50 rounds of WWB through her with not one problem! I also ran 25 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense 90 Gr. through it as this will be my carry ammo with no problems at all. Actually I think it was a little tamer with the Hornady's. All in all it was a good day of shooting. Now comes the fun part, CLEANING!!! lolololol Be Safe, Dave

Since I am a newbie and need a bunch of sight and trigger control practice I bought this Neos. The white target on the right was at 10 yards and the Silhouette at 7 yards. I was aiming at the little guy in the left corner for 1 mag, and shooting at the #7 for another mag. The strange coloring on the Neos is lighting reflection and is not the gun.

I have been taken trainging private lessons at the Smith & Wesson Accadamy for the past two months. I do feel that I am gaing good information and working with just one instructor is really nice. Each one hour lesson runs me $92.00 plus another $60.00 for ammo, so its 152.00 per hour, would you drop that kind of cach for this? What do you all think about other solutions? Thanks, Steve

Shooting low what should I do?

I have been shooting for about a year now and I am frustrated with my shots . I have a 9mm XDm and a 9mm SC (shooting better with the XDm). My problem is that I am shooting low all the time. I do not think I am anticipating the shot I am really trying to let the shot suprise me. The target that says what you are doing based on the area that you are shooting says I am breaking my wrist, I do not really understand what that means.

I have tried to hold the gun tighter and stiffer so I do not break my wrist, but holding it to tight I start to shake a little, I am not shooting low but I have to get real tight grip that is uncomfortable to shoot and I fatigue to quickly and start to shake a lot. There has to be something else I can do strength is not a problem it has to be a form issue. I am not doing something right.

I am easily shooting inside a paper plate at 50ft but low. Groupings are usually desent (a stray once in a while).

Need a little help, suggestions.

Went to the range today moved from about 10 yards to 25. I wasn't doing too well would get about 5 right on then the groups would suck. It wasn't until I gripped to the poing of shaking that I started hitting really dead on. If I relaxed my grip the grouping suffered. Shoud my grip be this tight? I mean if it keeps me on target I guess it's better than not being on right. Last mag of 15 with my 9 had 3 low 4 high and right the I said srew it and choked the crud out of it got 2 just a hair off to the top and 6 that punched out the center. That was with my 9mm.

With the .40 maybe because I know it's got a bigger kick I instinctively grip it harder I did much better no strays and a 4 inch group not great but nothing all over the place either.

With my handicap and weaker eyesight, I decided to get a CT grip for my XD .45 Service. I installed it early this week and ran 75 rounds downrange. Today I tested the rig to make sure the CT held its zero. I generally practice at realistic gunfighting ranges of 3 yds, 7yds, and 15 yds.

pic 1 is 7 yds, from bottom to top, 1 13 rd mag per target

These were slow controlled draws from the Crossbreed Supertuck. I'll begin increasing speed next.

A New Place to Shoot

The FFL from whom I bought my XD(M) .40 operates his gunsmithing shop out of his home, and yesterday I went by to pick up my Ithaca Model 37 .16 ga. from him after he had tried valiantly to rescue it from my neglect. As we were talking, I was lamenting the lack of any decent places to shoot in the area. I told him that plenty of people have suggested places where I can go to shoot bottles and cans, but there's nowhere to hang up a target.

He asked if I had a few minutes to spare, and had me hop in to his little utility vehicle. He drove me down a couple of dirt roads, and when we stopped, there was a beautiful range, with a 10-foot high earth & RR tie backstop probably 60 feet wide. Steel reactive targets, and plenty of room to hang up paper targets.

"Feel free to use it anytime," he said. Took me about 18 hours to assemble a range bag with a staple gun, and a 6x8 tarp to catch brass, but I finally made it out at noon today. Fired 100 rounds, and below is my last target, a full magazine at about seven yards, fired slow. Today is a good day:

I noticed that I am much more consistant with the 9 than either 40. I can also tell when it is time to rest a little. I start to pull down and left. Can anybody suggest something to help with this?
Another thing, a RO said something that got me to wondering. Are .40's less accurate than other calibers? I did notice a tigher grouping of the 9 vs the .40

First time to range with new XD9 SC and Mec-Gar 18 round magazine

I have had an XD40 SC for around a year and I have been impressed by it. I have been wanting a 9mm pistol for a while, so I bought a new XD9 SC at the gun show three weeks ago.

I just got to take it to the range for the first time this past weekend. Before going to the range, I cleaned and lubed the gun with CLP and I added a Pearce grip extension to the 13 round magazine.

I used Remington 115 gr. FMJ, Monarch 115 gr. FMJ, and Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr. JHP. Myself and two friends put a total of 250 rounds through the gun. Absolutely no failures or problems of any kind. The gun and sights were right on target. No FTF or feeding issues of any type. You could not ask for a gun to do any better. One of my friends is a police officer and former navy guy. He uses a Sig 226 on duty and carries a Sig 229 for his personal CCW. He picked up the XD9 SC and shot the center out of the target at 15 yards. He was sufficiently impressed with the XD. My other friend uses a Sig 239 for his CCW and he has never liked my XD40 SC because of the recoil. He was pretty impressed with the XD9 SC and especially when I told him it held 13+1 with the short magazine.

During the range visit, we used my new Mec-Gar 18 round magazine. I removed the spacer that Springfield supplies with the factory 16 round magazine. Once I slide it into place on the Mec-Gar magazine and inserted it into the XD, it felt just like the standard 16 round factory magazine. The Mec-Gar is a about 1/3 of an inch longer, but you do not notice it. It had a little flex to it when locked in the gun, but it was no more flex than the standard factory magazine. The magazine feed perfectly and on release it dropped just as smooth as the factory magazines. That did not surprise me, since I have owned Berettas and Mec-Gar makes their magazines. Good quality product and cheaper than the Springfield factory magazines.

Footnote: The vendor at the gun show told me that they have been selling a lot of the Mec-Gar magazines to law enforcement due do the black finish as opposed to the shiny surface of the factory magazines.

I've been carrying a Sig SP2022 for several months but wanted to get a smaller carry gun for the last month or so. Had considered a few other models, but last weekend I started thinking about an XD Sub-compact, since I've owned an XD-9 for a couple years and have been very happy with it. A local shop had a reasonable price on a new XD-9 SC in bi-tone, and man did it look sweet.

I was never completely happy with my Sig P239 SAS .40 in bi-tone for a couple reasons, so I was ready to trade/sell it now. And I knew the value of that gun would get me close to the price of a new XD SC.

Visited the gun show in Akron today to see if I could find a dealer to trade me straight-up for the XD (and had a few offers to buy the Sig) but no one had the gun I wanted, and I knew the shop did. Got the same price on trade that I'd been offered at the show, so it's all good.

Now, before I did the deal I visited their range with my existing XD. It had been almost 8 months since I'd shot it, and I wanted to put a few rounds thru it to make sure I wanted another XD. Not that I had much doubt, of course!

After 20 rounds I was convinced, but put all 50 rounds thru the old gun anyway, since it had been awhile. Then I went upstairs and went thru with the trade/purchase. I usually clean my new guns before firing them for the first time, but I couldn't wait. Went back downstairs, field-stripped the new gun to make sure there were no barrel obstructions and that it was properly assembled, then put holes in a fresh target.

Wow. What a terrific gun, as we all know. Might be a little more kick with the smaller gun, but I shot it just as well as my other XD. I didn't keep my target, but I did OK, tho I'm pulling my shots 1"-2" left. I believe it's a flaw in my grip with the XD, as it's a little different than my Sigs - and it was the same with both XDs. Nothing some range time won't fix!

I joked with the clerk that now I have to start all over. Run another 100-150 rounds thru the new XD, run/test some carry ammo thru it, and buy a new holster. Kind of expensive but necessary stuff for adding a new carry gun, but it's also kind of fun!

I know you've seen 'em before, but since it doesn't exist with a pic here's a shot of the new gun:

So today after having the gun for a little over a week I finally took my GSG5 shooting. Put 400 rounds down at my pistol range. I shot it at 25 and 50 feet changing it up periodically. I enjoyed spraying the hell out of it and surprisingly even then it kept decent groups. I also spent time double tapping with it, and also just trying to shoot as accurately as possible. THIS THING IS SWEET! Very accurate. On the last mag round 394 decided to ftf, but after inspecting the bullet I put fixed it and shot it. Great little gun. Sure it looks like an airsoft but wow I can't believe how much fun I had with it today. I think it is now my favorite weapon of my collection even! I'll take some picks of my best groupings and post them later tonight.

for a little fun out of the sun.
I usually practice at ranges I might actually have to shoot at: 3yds, 7yds, 15 yds. Today I worked out at 20 yds, the max distance at our indoor range.

I'm still pulling a little left. More trigger control work I guess.

Me and the misses went to Rangemasters in Springville yesterday. It was a nice facility but I have to admit to being slightly disappointed. They list Kimber as a manufacture they carry but had zero in store. We had hoped they would have one we could rent as my wife is looking in the direction of a Kimber full size for her first gun. Anyway, we wound up renting their Rock Island .45 GI issue type pistol with fixed plain steel sights to try out. It made aiming a bit tricky to say the least. We also put about 100 rounds through our XDm40.
This is my first mag if forty. Obviously my control still needs work but I like that I had more repeatability in my shots.

...and yes, we BOTH had a lot of fun.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the range for the XDm40 shots was at 7yds. Since it was a new gun to the wife and I, the range on the .45 was 3yds.

If the pics don't work the first time, I will edit the post until I remember how to post them right.:)

...and yes, we BOTH had a lot of fun.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the range for the XDm40 shots was at 7yds. Since it was a new gun to the wife and I, the range on the .45 was 3yds.

XD 9mm 5" - Broken extractor (x2)

Got about 25 rounds into my shooting session yesterday and the extractor on my XD 9mm 5" broke. This is the 2nd time this gun had done this to me, no other failures, just the extractor twice. Now, I am not -too- upset as the pistol has had 50,000 rounds through it, and I figure something has got to give sooner or later. But it got me to thinking.

I am using a 22 lb recoil spring, and I wonder if the extractor is being put under extra strain by the heavier spring. I don't think that's the case since all the extractor has to do is drag the case out of the chamber, and the recoil energy operating the slide should simply be pushing on the breech face via the base of the case. But as I have had 2 broken extractors (the only breakages on the gun to date), and the only other mods to the gun are that guide rod and recoil spring, I figured I'd see what the rest of the gang thought.

Thanks,

Crimson Trace laser grips

I recently installed this laser grip on my XDSC and I have been to the range twice since then. My question to those of you that have installed these is how long did it take you to adjust to them ? I am not talking about the increased grip width but shot placement with the laser dot. I am thinking of getting a laser bore sight and checking to make sure that the laser is sighted in properly.

I went out this weekend and shot my XD(m)40 and my XD45 Service out on the shooting range my uncle made last spring. I shot 100 rds through both pistols. Went out there with two of my best friends and they both fell in love with my pistols. We took turns shooting and just had a great time all together, I feel very fortunate to have a range that I can just go and shoot at any time of the day. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the targets, although there was some good shooting going on. My dad and his six brothers own 80 acres that they put a really nice hunting shack on, and 200 acres across the road from the shack which has the shooting range on it. I'm feel so blessed to have such a luxury as hunting land that someday I'll be part owner of. I'm not trying to flaunt or show off, just merely express how good I have it and how grateful I am. I had an excellent weekend, my sister had her baby on the 24th, my dad's birthday, how cool is that? He turned 51 and became a second time grandpa on the same day. I needed that weekend because the last month and a half has been extremely stressful, my mother got a liver transplant, (holy crap was that scary), my youngest brother has swine flu, my girlfriend's grandma died, and I'm losing my job cause the store is going out of buisness. So it was really nice to go to the range and put some lead downrange and just forget about my worries for a little while. Sorry if this story is boring, I just needed to vent and express my gratitude about having a nice place to go wind down at.

This is my first handgun and I've now got about 600-700 rounds through it, 350 of them today.

I've always shot decently with this gun, but I also shoot the infamous low and left. I've been doing dry fire practice and working on my grip and trigger control at home. I'm still not dead center, but my groups are tightening up and moving towards the center, so that's great.

Here's my best 5 shot group at 7 yards from today. It's about .5"x1".

Image: http://home.swbell.net/smasraum/IMG_3569.JPG

Here's several targets at 7yds.

Image: http://home.swbell.net/smasraum/IMG_3572.JPG

The two targets on the right are at 3 yds and the rest are at 7 yds.

Image: http://home.swbell.net/smasraum/IMG_3573.JPG

Here's 2 mags with 5 rds each at 15 yards. The first 5 rounds were really low and left, so I tried to relax and just squeeze the trigger without thinking about it for the next 5 rds which were more centered.

Image: http://home.swbell.net/smasraum/IMG_3568.JPG

I had a great time. I need to work on my trigger control more so my shots keep migrating towards the bullseye.

After the range I went to Walmart and bought 400 more rounds of 9mm to replenish my stock. Now I'm ready for my next trip.

Range news from North Florida

As mentioned in another thread, the members at Second Amendment Inc in Yulee, Florida were already half-jokingly asking when the next 6 lanes would be open.

The owners have plans drawn up for not only 6 "members only" lanes, but for a 360 degree practical shooting simulator with air charge weapons (for realistic recoil) and multiple scenarios.

It's like kids waiting for Christmas around here:lol:

before you need to start aiming high to compensate for bullet drop with 9mm or .45acp pistols? i usually dont try for more than 25 meters but just for fun i took 15 shots with each at 50 meters and to my suprise i hit a torso size target with all of em granted they were scattered but all made a hit which made me wonder how far before they start dropping. I saw a mythbusters that proved a .45 will hit the gound in the same time frame weather fired in a straight line or dropped from same distance which was pretty cool. I think they fired one in a straight line from 36 in off the ground and it went 150 yrds b4 hitting the ground while dropping 1 from same distance and they hit at same time
