Is it a b*tch and require alot of grinding, or is it not too much work. I've decided to take all of the tacticool crap off my AK and make it pure(r). I'm sick of it, the way it looks, and how I don't ever use ANY of the stuff I put on the rail's any way.

Old man Kalashnikov would probably beat my *** anyways for disrespecting his beautiful weapon.

It is a handle that rotates like a hk rifle built into the gas tube......crazy.

I wouldn't put one on my gun, but I am sitting home with nothing to do so I thought I'd put it on the forum.

I read that it was designed by an 18 year old named Ethan Dublin. Whatever you think of the product, you have to admit that it is cool from someone his age. I wish him well.

saiga in 5.45 or .223?

I figure the availabity vs. cheap ammo goes slightly in favor of the .223

5.45 seams like it is suposed to be a better wounder at distance, and that with the cheap military ammo. Up close, the higher energy of the 5.56 would take over I imagine.

AK 74 mags look to be a bit cheaper than Galils or modding the gun to take ARs.

anything else to add or dispute my above claims?

While reading up on the Galil, it said the 5.56 has higher pressure charge, and thats why they used a milled reciever, but the saiga is stamped. Think thet will ever be a problem? seams like that mainly a bolt and barrel thing

Moscow, Russia (CNN) -- Red Army tank commander Sgt. Mikhail Kalashnikov invented his first machine gun in 1942, during the Second World War, as he sat in a hospital bed recovering from a wound that he got in western Russia.

But as Russians say, the first blintz always comes out wrong. His first model had inborn flaws and defects, and is now on display in an arms museum bearing his name.

It took him several more years to develop and fine-tune what later became an internationally recognized perfect killing instrument -- the AK-47. AK is a Russian acronym for 'Kalashnikov's machine gun,' and 47 stands for the year it was invented.

On Tuesday the legendary weapons designer turned 90. It was a day celebrated in Russia on a scale akin to a national holiday.

In a televised Kremlin ceremony, President Dmitry Medvedev decorated Kalashnikov with the country's highest order, the Hero of Russia.

"You've invented not only the famous Kalashnikov machine gun itself but also a national brand which every Russian, every citizen of our country is proud of," the Russian president said.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory letter calling Kalashnikov "a truly legendary personality and world famous weapons designer," Putin's official Web site says.

"You have lived a long life that is worthy of profound respect," it says. "Each stage of this path is inextricably linked to the history of our country, its heroic and military pages, as well as the development of the domestic weapons industry. Your main achievement -- the Kalashnikov assault rifle -- has repeatedly been recognized as one of the best inventions of the 20th century."

The AK-47, along with its various modifications, has been recognized in the Guinness world record book as being the most common machine gun worldwide. For national armies and paramilitary guerrillas alike, it has been a weapon of choice for more than six decades.

Apart from Russia, more than 50 countries employ various modifications of Kalashnikovs today, according to Rosoboronexport, Russia's government arms export agency. Two countries, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, proudly display a Kalashnikov on their state insignia.

However, Anatoly Isaikin, general director of Rosoboronexport, told journalists that half of an estimated 100 million machine guns under the Kalashnikov brand around the world are fake: They've been produced without a license or a special agreement with the Russian government.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, a small, frail man who seldom appears in public lately, told a CNN crew during an excursion to the arms assembly plant in his home town of Izhevsk, where he has worked at since 1949, that there are two main qualities that describe his machine gun: simplicity and reliability.

"It is a thousand times harder to make simple things than complicated ones," he said, speaking in the high-pitched tremulous voice of an old man. "It is very important because a soldier doesn't have university degrees. He needs a simple and reliable weapon. Just as an academic, for that matter, in a combat situation. There's simply no time to figure how to operate a complicated weapon and press many buttons when the enemy is advancing on you."

Kalashnikov firearms are also renowned for being tough and robust.

In a Russian state TV documentary released the day before Kalashnikov's birthday, the durability of his invention was demonstrated by being whacked against stones and thrown into mud and water. It was still able to fire, in both heat and cold.

In the documentary, filmed at a firing range in Izhevsk, Kalashnikov tested a new brand of a machine gun that he says is 40 percent more efficient than existing models.

At his advanced age, he still works at his design bureau developing new lines of arms. And recently he has authored his sixth book, which carries as its title a version of his life motto: "Everything you need should be simple."

Kalashnikov planned on going back to work the day after his birthday celebrations.

The question he hates most, and the one he's been asked most frequently over the decades, he said, is whether he feels sorry about the hundreds of thousands of people around the world that were killed as a result of his invention. To that, his standard response is, "I've designed my weapon to defend the borders of our Fatherland, and let it continue to serve this purpose."

I got a new Saiga in from Kvar. Fit and finish are excellent. The trigger was a bit heavy compared to my Mak. It shot respectable groups at 25 yards in the 1 inch range. I did not get a chance to shoot it further out due to loss of sun light.
Here are the pics.

I wanted it to be a tacticool AK so I mounted a MI rail system and then I took a ML2 Aimpoint off one of my AR's and put it on the Ak. I also put on a surefire x300 for the photo.

I wanted it to be a tacticool AK so I mounted a MI rail system and then I took a ML2 Aimpoint off one of my AR's and put it on the Ak. I also put on a surefire x300 for the photo.

Decision time - side mounts and red dots.

This reminds me of the old phrase "I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure".

I am STILL looking into side mounts and optics for my AK. Here's where I am:

RED DOTS
I have been considering both the PK-23 line (http://eastwave.ca/products/scopes/pdk23.html) and the PK-AS (http://eastwave.ca/products/scopes/pk-as.html) red dot. A member here said he bought the PK-23 but has not posted any feedback other than the mount was loose. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info about the PK-23 on the web. I do see that the PK-AS gets very good reviews. Just wondering if the PK-AS is worth the extra $100.... (Please don't tell me to get an Aimpoint. I can't afford a $400+ optic).

On the other hand, these M3 Clones (http://www.primaryarms.com/product.sc?productId=18&categoryId=5) have been getting truly GREAT reviews over on AR15.com (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=325&t=173865) and at $69 for what is claimed to be a weapons grade optic, they would seem to be an extraordinary value.

SIDE MOUNTS
Both of the above Russian sights come with an uncentered side mount. I don't know how I will get on with that but I might do okay since I am left eye dominant. Anyone have experience with the quality of the supplied mounts? If they are not much good, then I may as well order the optics with a weaver mount or rings and use a third party over-the-bore side mount.

Speaking of which , there are good reports on both the KVAR-04s (http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=16166&cat=345&page=1) and the BP02 low profile mount (http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/detail.aspx?ID=818) from Kalinka. There is quite a price difference - at $95 the KVAR is nearly double the price of the BP02 but if it's worth it I would go that way.

SUMMARY
PK-23 $188 with supplied side mount
PK-AS $288 with supplied side mount
M3 Clone with BP-02 $120
M3 Clone with KVAR $167.

Making a decision with no experience of *any* of the items is tricky so all input would be much appreciated.

I have a vector that I bought about 2 years ago. I think it is a romanian build. I am very happy with it, but the bolt carrier is black and has some rough spots that look like it was pitted. I would like to have a polished carrier. Do I have to buy a whole parts kit? Does anyone sell just the bolt carrier? Have you polished yours?

Thanks

Romanian AK (WASR 10/63) unable to remove butt stock?

Yep, wasn't able to remove the butt stock. Followed some directions I found on the web but it really does not budge. Unscrewed the retaining screw, tried to pry out with large flat bladed screw driver. Even banged a little with a big rubber mallet but no go. Just will not come out. I used as much force as I felt comfortable with for fear of damaging something if I was in fact missing some trick.

I don't need this off yet, just wanted to get familiar. However, I may be interested in a folding stock at some point so I would like to know I can get it off. I assume the folders are made (or some of them are) to attach to the gun the same way the original did with no modification needed?

I have a Norinco AK, and I have decided she needs to have a face lift. I got rid of the wood furniture awhile back and put on a dragunov fiberforce stock years ago. Now, I am thinking of modernizing. I want to get some green polymer furniture with rails on the forend for optics, grips, etc. I am looking for some suggestions on quality materials. Thanks!:D

My local range says my AMD-65 is too loud?!?!

I posted this on a local NC gun forum, but wanted to get some other thoughts on the matter. FYI, the Wake County Range is an indoor range, cement floor and cinder block walls, with little to no sound barriers of any sort.
===========================
So I went down to the Wake County Range today to do some shooting. My main goal (other than blasting away some ammo) was to test out my newly built AMD-65. I had done headspace testing with a "poor-man's" headspace gauge someone told me about, so I was ready to go.
Not even halfway through the first 20 round mag, the range safety officer is getting in my space and complaining about the noise. ??? According to him, AK's don't need brakes or flash suppressors since they don't have much recoil to worry about, so why did I put that "ridiculous" muzzle brake on my AK? Why don't I take that off while I'm at the range? Well, says I, it's permanently attached so the rifle will be legal length. He then says "I guess you better enjoy shooting it today because I'm going to talk to the manager about banning that ridiculous thing." WTF??!!

Okay, so I shot through 8 30 rounders and 2 20 rounders before moving on to my 10/22 and my XD-9. The important part is that the AMD functioned 100%, so I guess NCShooter26 and I did a good job on the build. It's always nice when the gun doesn't blow up in your face or suffer a catastrophic failure of some sort!

So now what? Anybody have a similar experience? One RSO was trying to convince me to break out the torch to un-solder the brake that's on there and replace it with a different one, or to at least fabricate a sleeve/cover type deal to go over the holes in the brake. I wanted to tell them to go pound sand, but I still want to shoot my guns there... I guess I may have to reconsider if they actually ban my gun, but we'll have to wait and see if that happens.

This is the brake that is on the AMD right now

It sucks that it was only 25 yards, but none the less awesome!

Well the very first round was a "fail to fire". I ejected the round to see it was struck, but did not fire. Serves me right for using the "cheap stuff". All other rounds fired true.

I can't wait to do it again.

Hi,

I am interested in a subtle carrying case for my WASR. I don't like the idea of an obvious "tacticool" bag that gets seen by everyone on my street when I walk to my vehicle (I live in the city).

I have seen an expensive bag sold online for this purpose ($175) but I think there is a cheaper solution, I just don't know what.

Can anyone make a suggestion? I was thinking something along the lines of skateboard or other sports bag.

Thanks,

Well I finally got my stock from Centerfire after almost a year of waiting.
Now I am having a problem getting the old stock off. From what I have read it is just the two screws on the buttstock that are holding this thing in but on my PSL one of those is stripped (figures) and I can't get that out.

My other problem is the upper. I have not figured out a way to take out the wood without damaging it. Is there some special way to get these two parts off without me wanting to pull my hair out?

help please :D

My other problem is the upper. I have not figured out a way to take out the wood without damaging it. Is there some special way to get these two parts off without me wanting to pull my hair out?

help please :D

Just got some mags in from Cope's, and was wondering if anyone knew anything about them. They're sealed in a plastic wrapper in a light coat of oil. Each one has a sticker that says "Made in Bulgaria". Spring is very strong, and has a polymer follower. Thought they were a pretty good deal for 13 bucks a pop. Anybody know the history on these?

I have an ak built off of a maddi parts kit. I am in the process of making it 922r compliant. So i bought a new us made flash hider in the standard 14x1 lh thread. So first problem the original would not come off because the pin was frozen so i filed the flash hider and pin down so they would clear each other. I know big mistake. So i get it filed down and while taking it off i find out that it is threaded right handed. So needless to say my new flash hider will not work because my barrel has been threaded 1/2x20 right hand thread. Has anyone else ran into this problem and how did you fix it?

Im interested in adding a wire folder to my wasr, ive found a few complete sets but what im having trouble fidning is info on the install. Ive read some things that say you have to lop off the 2nd screw hole on the top of the tang and some that say it bolts in using both screw holes.

Can anyone verify the install process and maybe back it up with pics. Also any particular place i should buy the wire folder from? Thanks in advance.
