After my most recent find of a Springer Compact I now have 1911itis worse than ever,so much so I am considering trading or selling both of these for one.I would really now like a Springfield EMP in .40S&W,I guess I am just a 1911 fan, they just seem to fit right. And it would seem that Springfield 1911's are top of the line.

Any ideas anyone, any opinions on the EMP would be welcome, experiences good or bad. This is not a feeler thread, just need some outright knowledge.

Ok, So I bought my Springfield G.I. back in Sept. I have only been able to shoot it a few times and I want to get a few things for it like, Trigger, Magazines, a beavertail grip safety to name a few. The question I have is are all parts interchangeable? if I want a match trigger, will any match trigger fit my gun? The same for all parts?

I went and traded my Mini 14 after all and the outcome was very pleasing, the Springfield Compact I was interested in had next to no internal wear, and when I finally got to fire the pistol all went very well,1 Wilson Mag and 75 rounds later. And this is what you get.

Para GI Expert review with pics

hi everyone, new to the forum and wanted to post my review of a recent purchase :)

i bought the para gi expert a few months back.

Image: http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab104/champop1911/P1020416.jpg?t=1254569293

i put some vz tiger stripe operator grips on:

Image: http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab104/champop1911/P1020377.jpg

i've put about 600 rounds through it so far with no problems aside from a ftf one round early on during the break in, and has not been repeated. (this gun comes so tight when brand new, you have to really grip it to pull back the slide--the manual recommends a 500 round break in).

it shoots quite accurately, allowing you to easily make a ragged hole at 15 yards. the very smooth and light trigger pull aids in this too. it feels about 4lbs.

the slide to frame fit quality is instantly noticeable when you first pull back the slide. it's smooth as glass, and has no play whatsoever.

Image: http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab104/champop1911/P1020364.jpg

the polishing of the frame ramp and barrel throat are also quite nice, and the barrel is crowned at 11 degrees.

Image: http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab104/champop1911/P1020411.jpg

you certainly wouldn't expect these features on a $550 1911.

here's 50 rounds at 15 yards, two hand hold:

Hey guys I searched the forums but couldn't find anything recent on the SA EMP.
I really love the look of the emp and would like some input from people who own 1911's. I have an XDm but it IMO is too big and HEAVY to cc all day. I love just about any gun from Springfield and was kinda torn between the EMP or the xd sc. Weight is a factor in all day comfort to me that is why I carry an LCP but I know that it is not a preferred gun for self defense just a good back up.

I would also like to know if most would recommend 9mm or 40. I like 40 but it does tend to make the guns heavier.
Any info is much appreciated Thanks Phil

Debating ammunition to try, and want some stuff to try for a 1911 and stuff that I should wait till later to try.

Just saw a box of Winchest 230 gr personal protection HPs at walmart for 28 sounded semi reasonable and found they were 361 ft/lbs so I bought it.

I've seen golden sabers used a lot.

Any other things I should try? Or will the winchester be prone to issues/run very dirty? I don't want really dirty ammo for carry ammo seems counter intuitive.

1911-ALR/Taurus QA/QC?

I am looking into a 1911 for a future purchase,

I have done some searches on aluminum frames which were inconclusive. Is there a distinct advantage or disadvantage?

The other question is the Taurus 1911 in any form worthty of $600? They have climbed($4-500 range) and are still available via internet for 600ish. I would like to buy locally for help with warranty issues but prices are considerably higher.

If you talk to a shop that sells them the say good things, those who don't carry the brand dog them. I have had good results with one of there revolvers but that is entirely different gun.

I have shot a few kimbers with mixed results, I don't expect it to be better or even as goodby any means but for the money is the Taurus worthy. It seems that it just depends if I get lucky with the particular one I end up with. From what I have seen factory service/warranty is majorly lacking.

However, I don't want a run of the mill GI or equivalent with less features for the same money. The whole draw to the taurus is the added features etc. But if the quality is hit and miss at best, I am skeptic.

I want good performance for a moderate-low price, it seems reasonable, but might end up a gamble.

Opinions? Ideas, Thanks! B.

...I have 3 options available to me, but I cant decide.

1. Colt Gold Cup Trophy s/s
2. Dan Wesson Marksman s/s

3. STI Spartan (this would be my "economical" choice if I cant bring myself to spend the extra dough on my first 1911)

the top 2 are very close in price, and I love both of them. Very close in features as far as I can tell, only difference being, from reading online, that dw may use less mim than colt, but hey, ITS A COLT!!!!! But this is my very first 1911, as I still dont know very much, so I am still a little fearful of the "unknown"! I keep thinking it would be best to go with a lesser expensive piece, the rational being "dont go too far too fast"! Price for the sti is HALF of the dw marksman. the colt is right in the middle, pricewise.

I sorta like the idea of spending less now, and replacing as I go, maybe I'll learn a little more about the 1911 that way!!!! (as opposed to just buying one that i know I will be happy with as a completed piece, and probably never need to upgrade or change a thing)

Guys and gals, whatta ya think? Go economical to start, or just pony up and get one of the others? If economical would be better for a 1911 newb, did I pick a good piece(sti spartan)?

Or, if you say just man up and go for it, which one- dan wesson, or colt?

...I have 3 options available to me, but I cant decide.

Here are a few pics of my latest addition, a Kimber Custom Classic Target.

Image: http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv262/gbjones/Guns/DCP_1418.jpg

Image: http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv262/gbjones/Guns/DCP_1421.jpg

Here's the result of the first outing with it. Approx 40 rounds of practice ball ammo, 7 yrds. Me likie, a lot. :!:
Image: http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv262/gbjones/Guns/DCP_1408.jpg

Now for the story. I never had much of a desire for a 1911, though I've been lusting for a GSR for some time now. Anyway, my 15yo son has been bugging me for some time now for a 1911, as he developed a real thing for them over the last several months. Last time we were at the Dulles gun show, he says, "Dad, if I find a 1911 I really like, would you buy it for me, and I'll pay you back?" What else could I say, but of course.

So last week I tell this story to a co-worker that I knew was a Kimber enthusiast and had several in the past, and to my surprise, he said he had one he'd sell me for $600. I think this is a pretty good price for this model Kimber. It has a couple of small light scratches, but it has probably less than 500 rounds through it. When i brought it home and showed my son, his response was OM*G !!!! I think I hit a home run with him.

My son is at a church retreat this weekend. When I told him I was going to take it to the range this weekend, his response was "I hate you".:lol::lol:

After the first outing with it, I now see what all the fuss has been about a 1911 trigger. It is soooooo sweet. I can feel the 1911 disease starting to take hold. Might have to get one for CC. Too many guns out there, not enough money. ;)

Question about a Kimber

**Please no kimber bashers, I am fully aware of the opinions some have about Kimber**

My question is about the firing pin block safety on the Kimber (custom 2 and TLE 2). Both have it, and I am considering one.

Whichever I do choose, be it a Kimber or something else, *it will be a sd/carry/nightstand piece*. This is why I am curious (or concerned)...

If I understand this correctly, the firing pin block safety is somehow tied to or connected to the function of the grip safety (on the kimber, i read that on the colt 80 series it is somehow tied to the function of the trigger, which i absolutely do not understand, but thats a whole nother thread). If the grip safety is NOT fully depressed when you pull the trigger, the firing block safety is still "engaged", even though the hammer will still drop when you pull the trigger, it will not go bang!!

first, do I understand this correctly? if yes, what I really want to know is...

...can I somehow modify this to bypass this feature? I ask because if I ever do have to use my carry piece in a sd situation, with adrenaline pumping and motor skills affected, if I quick draw and end up with a not so firm grip on the pistol, the last thing i want to do is pull the trigger and NO BANG! I want to be 100% confident with my sd piece.

the only thing i can think of is maybe replacing the grip safety with the "tactical bump". but is there any other way? or would this be the best option?

I know there are other 1911 options out there that I dont have to worry about this particular "issue", but I would still like to know, as this is my only "hangup" on the kimber option, and would still like to consider the kimber if I can "fix" it.

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks in advance for your help.

and what in the world can I do to avoid it in a pistol I have had since 1992? Never had a problem before, but have never used other magazines in it either. The pistol in question is a Springfield Champion parkerized, not quite stock anymore (trigger, sights, 3.5#pull, beaver, etc..). I purchased some new magazines, reputable brand, and have a problem with every one of them (8 is enough). They flip the last round in the stack straight up and jam between the slide and barrel hood. All other rounds load, fire, extract without a hitch.

I'm not new to the world of pistols, and can usually figure this out, but I don't have a high speed camera to catch this, nor do I possess the brain of a high school student in geophysicalquantumhypermath. I'm not tweaking the gun like _yocan_ so I wouldn't have expected it.

Any explanation other than just buy magazines from someone else would be much appreciated, unless you got a really good cookie recipe......

What? I can bake.... on the grill.......:D

1911 RIA, starting to think it wasn't such a good deal.

The ring on the barrel is sticking straight down and catching in the lower receiver. So bad that I had to take a tiny screwdriver and touch it to get the slide apart.

So Maybe I don't understand but I thought it you got it correctly installed it shouldn't be able to do that. If that is correct is it because that ring is supposed to be too large to rotate into that position? or is it supposed to be shorter to not touch the lower reciever? The lower receiver the slot for it, the corners are missing their parkarization from wear and the end of the slot either side has a shiny point as well.

So yeah, do I wear down the ring, or do I get a drill and remover it (its not removeable) and replace it or do I call RIA?

Hammer falls after I fire.

This is my RIA 1911 5"Image: http://forums.1911forum.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
First four rounds happened half the time, next 5 every single round.

Heres what happens, trigger pulled hammer goes down, round goes off, cycling of slide process ends with the hammer down....

It doesn't go full auto, so I think its just not locking back and coming forward when the slide does. It did this when I first got it once in a while during hand cycling, but then I did the springs adjustment and fixed it... or so I thought, and now when firing this happens.

I do sort of ride the slide release as in when it rotates in my hand my thumb tip hits it, so slide doesn't stay open.

I've done a lot of work to this gun. So if I did something retarded please tell me.

Deburred/polished the FLGR and deburred its spring.

Polished the trigger.
Adjusted the sear spring tension, all three tines, I have a 3.1-3.2 lb trigger pull.
I polished lightly the bottom of the disconnector, and rounded the corner that when in the pistol is down. Nothing that touches the sear, just what touches the trigger (didn't even take all of the phosphate off)
I filed down the back of the hammer strut, due to it contacted the sear spring (barely any noticeable difference)
I don't believe anything I've done would cause this to happen unless the sear isn't connecting with the sear spring, but it worked fine hand cycling.

I've also dis/assed it 70 something times learning how to do everything. Only used CLP Rem OIl Dry lube and grease on it so far. Outside of the trigger bar prior to polishing nothing has hit/scrubbed on by anything harder than an AP brush. (did use a brass brush inside the barrel)

If you want pictures tell me what, I haven't even cleaned it yet, so if you want I can take it apart and take pictures the whole way through.

Any advice at this point would be appreciated. Image: http://forums.1911forum.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I spent way too many hours this week for this to end up this way.I need a hug.

I took my SA Trophy Match to the range today for the first time. This was the break-in session. I fired a total of 207 rounds. I cleaned it at 100 rounds and continued on. These pics were taken toward the end of the session. It took me a while to get use to shooting it since this is my first 1911. These groups were shot at 15 yards measured with a laser rangefinder. I was using 230g Winchester SXZ FMJ Training Rounds. I did shoot 7 WWB JHP's just to see how the gun liked them. It functioned flawlessly.

7 Round group. I shanked that one at the top.

anyone knows why or how it got dented? is it caused when loading new rounds? or some internal part of the gun pressing against the case?

I just got back from the range, and my batch of 200 gr SWC loads didn't do so hot. They fed up the ramp fine, but tended to catch at the top of the barrel underneath the hood. Pretty odd, I didn't expect that hangup.

So, next batch will be 230 gr RN. Rainiers are great bullets, cheap and easy to load, but the gun just didn't like the SWC profile.

Anyone else tried them?

My wife (and possible me later on) is interested in carrying the SA Micro Compact .45. I'm new to the whole 1911 style pistol and have a question on CCing this type of pistol.

What is the recommended way to carry this pistol? Unlike my XD's, this has a hammer and a manual thumb safety. Do you carry with the hammer down and safety off? Hammer back and safety on? Hammer back and safety off (since there is a grip safety as well)?

I'm a little concerned about the manual safety. I know we could train to take off the safety while drawing, but it's still a possibility. I'm sure I'll have more questions later on. Thanks.

Figure I can splurge and buy 2 more mags so I can consider carrying this thing as soon as I get 300 more rounds down the pipe, and might as well mutli task and test the mags.

So give me suggestions 8rds or larger. good for carry, good mags to see if they work in my gun.

EVerything that needed to be done, now is. 3.3 lb trigger pull. took 2 burs off the guide rod. got about 30% of the take up eliminated (not sure how I managed that) everything left to do is just preference.

IE
slightly higher MSH to make an angle thats closer to my other guns that I shoot well.

Shoter trigger take up.

Better sights

A take down hole in the guide rod. and I want to polish it.

I'm sure I'll be able to get good groups without those seeing how I had 7 out of nine hitting half cds at 12.5 yards.

No pics just wanted to say, just got done pulling the trigger 300 times, its still a 3.2 lb trigger so I think it worked out great.

So I'm reading through the frequent answers section of the 1911 forum, great 20 something links to show you how to do almost everything.

Well in the trigger job section, figured good light reading I'd enjoy it. I learned about "boosting" a way to alleviate creep, put thumb on hammer push towards slide pull trigger.

Well I did it and my creep is gone, and I think as a bonus the trigger weight went down .3 or .4 of a lb. So I'd say its useable now.

I'm a little OCD what can I say.

Edit: for those of you just showing up this is going to stay my 1911 tinkering saga. and will be semi-regularly updated until I get you a target where I'm happy.

Hey ya'll, quick few questions. I just bought mich3210's 1911, the Loaded Springfield. And so I was wondering, 1911s, I hear they like to run wet and dirty, so was told to only clean it every 500 rounds or so and to just make sure I'm oiling it and it'll be ok. There anything else like that that I should know about them? Also, it's got the two piece full length guide rod that I'm not a fan of cause you have to use tools to field strip it, know it's only an Allen wrench but still... There any advantage to keeping the full length in there, I heard it made it a little more reliable and that it stops the guide spring from scratching up the barrel and inside of the dustcover. Where as with the GI length guide rod you can take it apart without tools. What would I need to buy to replace the full length rod, just a GI length guide rod and the plunger cap or what? Thanks for y'all's help.

Do yall hate me yet? Lesson #1 I learned from this, don't try a complete dis/as of a 1911 without someone else to help you along around.

ok anyways my pistol is in a million pieces so I need help.

trying to follow this link Guerrilla Gunsmith --- 1911 Detailed Disassembly (http://www.guerrillagunsmith.com/1911detailed.htm) for re-assembly.

I get it totally together or so it seems and can't pull the hammer back to allow the safety to be installed. I assume I'm putting one of the springs on the wrong side of something and I can't figure this out, tried it multiple ways so, Sear spring, which way is it supposed to be on the sear when installed? Pretty sure I'm putting it in the wrong place in relation to the sear. Oh trigger is frozen as well. when its like this
Thanks guys.

I know detail stripping causes undue wear so I don't want to have to do this more than once in a great while (2k rounds or more preferred) so what should I do?

Tomorrow when I get it apart I'll be showing pictures to make sure its in decent shape. But for now could you tell me how to clean all the smaller parts/lube them for re-assembly. If I need to buy something else, tell me what it is and why. Thanks in advance.

malfunction 1 trigger stuck release trigger pull again bang.
malfunction 2 FTF, but cheap wolf ammo and the primer on that was legitimately deeper than the others. should I be worried?
malfunctions 3 and 4 happened in my 1 mag of rapid fire, 2 times the trigger stuck, release it and bang.

this is a new gun. only thing I can thin, of doing is to take the trigger out and look for burs, because it seems like it catches on something solid if the angle is just right. Feels like what happens when you don't depress the palm safety, but I AM depressing it, even held it in position, pressure on trigger and showed my friend kept it that way for 7 seconds on #1. pressing on the pam safety and didn't feel anything freeing up in the trigger.

anyone got advice? sorry RIA 1911 looks to have an aftermarket trigger. here you goapparently I lied, I'm still asking for advice.. http://www.xdtalk.com/forums/non-xd-other-gun-discussion-area/134481-its-official-im-done-annoying-everyone-advice-while-finally-bought.html

I've always been told that 1911 don't usually feed HP's. Well recently, a man with ALOT of experience with 1911's said it's alot of BS. I own a Springfield Armory 1911 GI model that is used as my daily carry and I was wondering if anyone uses HP's in their 1911 carry model. Is this possible, or is it a rumor?

this is what I've got on my RIA 1911 Image: http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/3975/pictures018.jpg (http://img97.imageshack.us/i/pictures018.jpg/)

heres why, full length guide rod, so the cap on the end of the spring is hollow and only has a 1/32" edge or so to push down on and it ends up having to use a tool to turn the bushing... Image: http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6660/picturesc.jpg (http://img402.imageshack.us/i/picturesc.jpg/)
do I have a problem or nothing to worry about?

The 1940 M1911A1 Army Field Manual

Basic Field Manual FM 23-35 (http://www.sightm1911.com/manual/manual.htm)

Yep, here is an online copy of the original M1911A1 Army Field Manual on the 45. This is actualyl an updated version of the original one issued to troops in and after WWI with the addition of the "enhancements" made to the original M1911 dutily noted.

An interesting read and in the later pages, proof positive that the M1911 was indeed designed as a horse pistol for mounted cavalry units. Many think that we adopted the 45/1911 because of its ability to stop people...namely the Phillippine Moros. Not true. It was adopted because our mounted cavalry units wanted a large caliber that would stop a horse. Stop the horse and you stopped the charge. The fact that it stopped people better than 38 or 9mm rounds was a bonus. Besides, back in the early 1900s, cavalry was the elite and most important army unit: what cavalry wanted...they got. We wound up with a 45 caliber autopistol because of mounted cavalry units!

I just thought I'd post it, since many here get into the M1911/45 and are not really aware of its interesting history. Amazing that a firearm designed in such early days of fairly low technology, still endures today, amongst all the new materials, designs and calibers. It was truly ahead of its time and the design endures.

Enjoy!
