Which feel better the hogue grips or the CTC when shooting?

Other question how hard is it with the CTC grips to NOT push the button when shooting? If I were to have a laser I would want to instantly turn it on as intended but if I don't want a laser I don't want to have to flip the mechanical switch to keep it off.

In particular I'm curious about the 1911s.

Decisions, decisions (597 vs 10-22)

I'd like to get a target-style 22 (classic stock, scope, and bull barrel) specifically for 100-yard training. I was planning on trying to find a 10-22 to fit the bill next year, but came across a used Remington 597 with a decent 3-9x scope and aforementioned bull barrel for $250.

I do not know much about 597s, but have been more than happy with my 572 pumper (with the right ammo, it is probably a 2 MOA gun or slightly less at 100 yards). I didn't get to examine it too closely, but looks to be in very good shape (couldn't find signs of excess wear and tear). If I had thought ahead, I would've copied the serial # and e-mailed Remington about it's date of manufacture.

Is this a decent deal, or a model to avoid and just get another 10-22 when I'm ready?

Updating AR-15's Image

The National Shooting Sports Foundation is trying to rebuild the image of the AR-15 rifle and you can help. The NSSF has coined the term Modern Sporting Rifle to more accurately describe the AR-15 platform and is asking that shooters do the same. The NSSF asks you to be an informed gun owner and to use the following facts to correct misconceptions about these rifles.

If AR-15-style modern sporting rifles are banned, your favorite traditional-looking hunting or target shooting semi-automatic firearm could be banned, too.

´ AR-15-platform rifles are among the most popular firearms being sold. They are today's modern sporting rifle.

´ The AR in "AR-15" rifle stands for Armalite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. "AR" does NOT stand for "assault rifle" or "automatic rifle."

´ AR-15-style rifles are NOT "assault weapons" or "assault rifles." An assault rifle is fully automatic -- a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.

´ AR-15-style rifles look like military rifles, such as the M-16, but function like other semi-automatic civilian sporting firearms, firing only one round with each pull of the trigger.

´ Versions of modern sporting rifles are legal to own in all 50 states, provided the purchaser passes the mandatory FBI background check required for all retail firearm purchasers.

´ Since the 19th century, civilian sporting rifles have evolved from their military predecessors. The modern sporting rifle simply follows that tradition.

´ AR-15-style rifles are no more powerful than other hunting rifles of the same caliber and in most cases are chambered in calibers less powerful than common big-game hunting cartridges like the 30-06 Springfield and .300 Win. Mag.

´ And, they are a lot of fun to shoot!

Hey all -

Got an M&P 9c that I need a good concealment holster for. Ideally, it will be small-of-back compatible/adjustable for other modes of carry, also.

Ideally, it won't break the bank - hoping for around $50 or so. Kydex or leather doesn't matter to me.

Also, I need a mag carrier for these stubby little 12 rd. mags.

Can you guys point me in the right direction? I've looked at bianchi and Galco, but haven't seen anything to my liking yet and haven't had much luck in my searches.

PS - this is for my wife to CC to if any ladies have thoughts, I'm all ears.

I e-mailed SA about bringing back the M6 Scout, and they had no plans to do so. :???: It ceased production from them in Jan 2005. I have wanted one for a backpack gun, as a companion to my self-defense carry. Cuz' squirrels spin 'bout a hunert yards when you head shot 'em with a .45 ACP.

Anywhoo. Wanted to get some opinions on the weapon from some who have shot one, own one, or might have an alternative suggestion. They run between $210 to $300+ on variants used, which is still reasonable.

A'ight. 'precaite the future input.

Here's a relatively crazy question. I'm thinking instead of spending tons of money on something like a Remington 700, where can I get a decently barreled Mosin with a trashed stock? I would prefer not to modify a rifle with a decent stock. Looking to spend less than $50 if this project takes off. My plan is simply to take the remains of the rifle out of the crapped out stock, dress it up a bit, perhaps have the sights removed, add an ATI stock, drill and tap for a scope mount rail, and add a bent bolt handle. Simple, want it to look good too. Probably going to get a C&R to make things in the future easier.

I'm specifically looking at buying a Mossberg 590 Special Purpose (#50660 (http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/NEW/50660.jpg)). I came across a vendor that has them on sale for $391.64 after transfer fee, taxes, etc. Is this a good deal that I should take advantage of, or is this more of an average price?

Mossberg's website says they retail for $506, and Gun Broker seems to have them for $365 + $20 shipping + transfer fee. Maybe I just answered my own question... :|

Ruger P Series Love

This is a compilation of different quotes from different forums regarding the Ruger P series, which is my favorite pistol. The ruger community is great and loves their guns, for good reason. I'd have to say its one the best values in semi-auto pistols, and the P90 is the most accurate .45 I have ever shot (shot some pretty high end 1911's too). I absolutely love them and decided I would post this up for the world to read. No flames please, I love M&P's too Image: http://mp-pistol.com/boards/style_emoticons/default/thumbup.gif

"I have no experience with or knowledge of the Beretta that your interested in, but let me say that I own a Ruger P90, and I flat out love it. I have big paws too, and it fits me very well, especially so after I swapped out the original grip panels with a Hogue wrap-around grip, a modification that I very heartily recommend on the P89 as well. I have shot P89's, and if I happen to find one at the right price, I am buying one, in no small part because they are so similar to the P90. For my money, you can't go wrong with Ruger, although I do like the P89 more than the P95, solely because you can't change grips on the P95."

"I have a Ruger P95 and have never had a problem with it in several thousand
rounds."

"Third, the Ruger P-series guns are good shooters, durable, accurate. Built like tanks. Make good trunk guns. But a tad on the thick side and blocky. Great fitment (slide to frame) but I'm not big on their finishes."

"I own several Rugers. Great weapons. They are affordable, they don't jam and they shoot where you point them. What more can you want?"

"I think the P95 is one of the most reliable semi autos out there. They are a bit bulky yes, but are very quick and easy to field strip and accurate to boot. The couple P95's I once had were accurate anyway. Years back I did a torture test on mine. I didnt handload at the time so I couldnt afford to do a "real " torture test but... I put 1000 rounds through one of mine (in one range session) without cleaning before I could feel the action gumming up some or slowing down any. No failure to feed or any kind of malfunction whatsoever. I have different tastes in firearms now but they are reliable as the day is long. If the size is not a problem for you I would recommend one. I love my Rugers."

"You really do not specify which Ruger in your question. This is very important as the P89 9mm and the P90 .45ACP were the cream of the crop for the P-series. Sadly the P89 is now officially discontinued (along with the P93 and P94) and the P90's days are limited. Ruger over-engineered the P-series into the most durable line of aluminum-framed autos that the world has ever known. Accuracy out of a P90 is excellent while the P89 is hot and cold. I have fired both and owned a P90 back in the 1990s."

"The P97 digested the entire 5000 rounds without a single malfunction"

"After being thrown in a mud pit, the P90 was removed an amazingly continued to fire without being so much as shaken out."

"This Fire Arm is Great! I have owned my Limited P89 for almost 5 years! Never have had a jam or even the smallest of issues! "

"The only issue I have had with my P-89 in a decade and over 6000 rounds is that guide rod spring. But turns out it was my fault. The guide rod spring has a particular direction it needs to be installed.

Ruger sent me a new Guide rod and explained the issue. Been more careful since then "

"I bought a used P89 about 5 years ago and absolutely love it. It came with Hogue grips, which I would highly recommend. I have never had a misfeed, and have found it to be very accurate. The solid metal frame makes it a little heavy, but it cuts down the recoil tremendously. I like this gun so much that I ended up buying the .45 caliber P90 over a Glock 21. I am not disappointed. The only thing I am disappointed about, however, is that I don't shoot the P89 that much anymore. It's too bulky for my regular concealed carry gun - I got a Kahr P9 covert for that - and now I carry my P90 as my primary sidearm for hiking/camping. I like it too much to ever give it up, though."

"I only have one thing say about this gun. I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT. Maybe that's more than one, oh well LOVE IT "

"I bought my P89DC used a couple months ago. It has only had a couple hundred rounds through it. I love it. Great on recoil. Just a bit longer(1/2") than a P95. I like it with the Hogue grips. Great shooter. This will be around for a long time. "

"gun functions and shoots everything you put in it flawlessly. would recommend to anyone looking for a gun they want to count on when the time comes. fired 10000 rounds thur mine without a single problem. great gun "

"Dont own one but had a chance to shoot one at a range. Wasnt disapointed. The guy modified it with a three pound trigger and some aftermarket sights. Trigger felt springy but honestly had better grouping with his weapon then any other weapon. Ever. "

"My Ruger P-89 was made is 1993. first year. It has been used for everything from hunting sidearm. to truck gun, to my main IDPA pistol match gun for many years. It has well over 6000 rounds through it. Still shoots like a dream. The two mods I have done are Houge wrap around grips. Big improvment, and night sights by Mepro light. . The grips were a big benifit. The night sights were so so but are better then the factory sights even in the day . Great gun. Great company to deal with as well. "

"I bought my P89 in April 2006 for $409. I have fired 450 rounds so far and has not jamed or misfired. A good choice for fist time buyers. "

"I bought my P89 in the fall of 90 if memmory serves me right. I saw it on the cover of a gun rag with the slide locked back and I fell in love. Totally cool looking. So I mustered up $280.00 and bought it new at a gun show. Some 16 years later and many thousands of rounds, it still shoots and looks like new."

"I just wanted to be the first to post on how much I like my Ruger P-90's and P-97's. "Ode to the Ruger .45ACP's... you will never be appreciated... you look like a Mack truck on the outside and a puzzle on the inside... Ah! But how you hit the mark without fail, reliable, yet unassuming...in a land determined to overlook you! I certainly agree that the P90 is a great machine, although I disagree with the looks and the puzzle. I also wanted to get used to the new forum. Looks good guys.

As far as "ugly," I think it is as pretty a pistol as any of them out there (stainless over gray.) Puzzle? Really not that bad. I had mine apart last night, and with a little practice, it can be taken down to the last spring and pin.

I haven't had a chance to get my hands on a P97 yet, but that should come up soon. I'll be looking forward to it!"

"The P-90's are extremely accurate right out of the box. I've heard that 1 1/2" with 230 ball at 25yds is common but my experience shows the 230 ball groups around 2 1/2 -3" at 25 yds. The 1" groups I've seen and shot (rested) were with the really hot +p variety: 185gr. +p, 230gr. +p. The P-90 Ruger really likes hot ammo."

"Both are nice, big, accurate (my P-90 will cloverleaf with 230-gr. ball, and LOVES Cor-Bon +p with that big ol' flying ashtray bullet), and tough as nails."

"Magnum 88C, I too have experienced tremendous accuracy with the Ruger P-90 and Cor-bon ammo. The +p loads really make a big difference!"

"Picked up my first P97 when they were first available. Put about 7,500 rounds through it without any problems. Accurate, too. Sold it early last year when I was infected with a very bad case of CZ-itis. Sold a P95, too. Replaced the P95 earlier this year. Tuesday, I replaced the P97. Had it to the range yesterday and put about 300 rounds through it. This one is even more accurate than the first one I owned."

"Love my P90! I mounted the Hogue grips - wrap around not the slip on. Also installed Tru Dot tritium sites, refit the trigger for that lite/just right double tap operation. I initially shot the P90 side by side with a Glock for comparison, went back to the shop and bought the Ruger! Most of the negatives I've been blasted with are "too big, too heavy". My reply - I don't want a little light .45, the weight helps control it! The last mod will be the ported barrel - and it's on order!"

"I would love to see an out of the box shoot-off between the P-90 Ruger, S&W 4506, Sig 220, Glock 21, and the Kimber Custom II. Clay Harvey reported similar tests in the early '90's with the Ruger coming out on top, but I'd like to see an up to date test. "

"Hi all, just picked up a p90 a couple months ago and I am in love. The feel in my hand, the weight of a well built hand cannon, and accurate to boot! I've shot Glock's before... if you like the toy gun look. Not for me."

"My P90 is every bit as accurate as my Springfield 1911 Loaded."

"...it also outperforms my XD 45"

"Right now I'd have to vote for the 345, over the 1911. "

"Choosing between a RIA 1911 & a Ruger P345; I would spring for a Ruger P90. A better gun than either of the other two... "

"I own a P345 and have never experienced a feed, fire, or eject malfunction. Not many 1911 platforms can say the same. That's my experience, YMMV. I'd take the 345. I know people carry 'cocked and locked' all the time, everywhere blah...blah, but it goes against every gun safety rule I ever learned. "

"I love my P345 never had any issues once I worked out my idiot errors on re-assembly. I have sigs, 1911s etc. I carry an LCP and a P345 each and every day at the same time, other than when at work its only the LCP. "

(1911) "this beastie is no P90."

"but I would also choose the P90 over it for lots of reasons, small and large. "

"P90,P90;P90.. oh yea P90...always goes bang, no mag. disconnect, has ambi safty(or decock) at no extra price unlike MOST 1911's. double action, so you don't HAVE 2 **** hammer back. "

"The p90 was the most accurate 45 I've ever owned."

"You can't beat the P90."

"I carry the P97 most because of weight and size, but if I was wanting a Range Gun, I definitely would get the P90. "

"p90........a very accurate/reliable DA 45 pistol, i won't part with mine."

"My P90 is exceptionally accurate, 100% reliable, and delivers felt recoil on about the same level of a polymer frame 9mm. "

"P90 hands down.....love the aluminum frame and stainless slide matched up with a set of hogue grips. "

"I haven't fired one, but the P345 has a good feel. I do have a P90DC. Probably why I haven't been all that interested in a P345. I'd go with the P90. "

"I own a Ruger P90 and love it. It is a comfortable, easy shooting, accurate gun. I purchased it used (very little) and was able to take it down in just a few seconds to completely clean it. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it! "

"You will love the P90. Mine is the most accurate .45 ACP I have ever owned, and I have owned a bunch. The only thing I did was change those God-awful factory grips with Hogues. " - Couldn't agree more

"One hell for stout and accurate pistol. I love mine. And it also wears hogues. "

"A great weapon. get in a lot of trigger time and you will be happy!"

"Congraluations on your new P90! I bought a used one a few weeks ago. After only 100 rounds, I'm wondering why I didn't get one of these a long time ago. "

"My p90 shoots my reloads quite well with no problems. And with today's ammo prices, reloading is important to me to keep shooting. "

"Great pistol! I love mine. "

"Ditto on the accuracy I have a kimber and a para ssp. My P90 will consistently outshoot them both. "

"Got some range time with the P90 today. Excellent feel, good accuracy, even with my reloads."

"Bought mine from a friend at work for $300. I love mine. "

"From years of reading P90 owner posts, think ya bought one of the best guns RUGER ever put out!!!!!!! "

"I like my P90,you won't go wrong with that purchase...... "

"Yep, love it- got Hogues too "

"Well, after a year with this particular P90, I'm still very pleased with the pistol. Sturdy, easy to shoot accurately, loads and fires reliably. I shoot it regularly. No signs of wear on the pistol or problems. "

"Other than big and heavy, the most accurate 45 I had, and I've had a bunch. A perfect house gun. "

"P90 is my First Semi-Auto, fun to shoot, accurate ( when I am), like my other Rugers, will be a keeper fer sure...................... "

"I have both the P-89 and the P-90 and love them both. I am primiarily a wheel gun user but out of the few semi-autos I own, they are my favorite. "

"I've had my P90 for7-8 months and I carry it everyday,I just put a set of hogue grips on it and I like it even more. "

"I've got the Davidson's P90, black slide with aluminum frame. I installed the Hogue grip - extremely comfortable for a LARGE grip pistol. It will digest ANY type of ammo and never skips a beat. This arm gets more attention at any shoot when .45's are pulled out, the reliability knocks everyone dead in their tracks...."

"I have both a P89DC and P90DC, and I love em both, but the P90 is the most accurate .45 I have ever owned, wheras the P89's accuracy is so-so at best. Therefore, I vote for the P90DC (in stainless, naturally.) "

"I agree with gunman...I like them all...P89s, P90s and also the P94s for their slimmer grip, but I think the .45ACP is a more accurate round than the 9mm, so I vote for the P90. All of them are reliable and well built. "

"P89 is my choice...couple thousand rounds all type ammo. and no jams "

"P97DC is my all-time favorite pistol of any kind followed closely by the P95DC."

"I know a guy, and up until tonight I didn't know he had a P94. So I saw it tonight by chance, and I was surprised and said to him that it was a P94, and its by Ruger. He was surprised that I knew what it was.
Here comes the good part. It was bought almost a decade ago used. He told me he shot 100 rounds and make maybe 5 trips a year to the range. He never cleaned it! That is around 5k rounds with no cleaning in a used P94 and he said he never had a problem with it, ever. He didn't even know if the guy who owned it before him cleaned it ever. I was beside myself.
I stripped it and took a look. Cleaned it off, put it back together and checked it. He was happy, and I was pleased with the Ruger brand. "

"I got to go to the pistol range on base today during lunch and fire my P95 for the first time. It shot perfectly, 100 for 100! I even took a shot of the target after my first thirteen rounds, 7 yard line fire. The one off to the right was the first shot...it kinda surprised me! I'm also doing a concealed carry class next Saturday for $80, so I'm looking forward to that. I'm loving this gun!"

"My 9mm P-89 Decocker started my firearms collection when I bought it back in June, 1992. I used it and enjoyed it's accuracy and reliability for several years, before being bitten by the 1911 bug. About 2 weeks ago, I got the P-89 out of the safe for the first time in about 5 years, grabbed a box of ammo and headed to the range. I just wanted to shoot something that hadn't got alot of attention paid to it in a while, and the P-89 was it.
I had forgotten what a joy this gun is to shoot. Reliable, reliable, reliable - and darned accurate too. And after being used to the recoil of the .45 ACP in my 1911's and my P345, the 9mm was EASY to handle.

There's been several times over the years when I'd look at the lonely P-89, sitting unused in my safe, and think about selling or trading it.

Glad I didn't. "

No flames please, I love M&P's too

Great, awesome, unbelievable rifle(when it works). Can hit a fly in the butt at 300 yards (when it works). If one is ever attacked by a pack of feral poodles post-a problem arises, this is the perfect defensive rifle (unless it jams, in which case you're poodle food). The upside is that one can hang more plastic aftermarket doo-dads on it than a Christmas tree, which may effectively frighten away bad guys when the gun jams. Also, by simply changing the upper, one can convert it into a Ruger 10/22.

The MINI-14:

I just picked up my 870 today and its pretty sweet. Its a 12ga with a mag extension and an 18" barrel. I intend on using it primarily as a fun gun and for home defense. I was thinking about installing an ar-15 style stock on it with a pistol grip. the one I have been looking at is made by advanced technology and its collapsible. Anyone out there have any experience with this brand? also, would is a ball park price to have the receiver drill and tapped for mounting a rail for optics?

So after headspacing my Mosin, and it passing the tests, I finally went shooting this weekend. I shot some Czech 147gr. surplus ammo that I bought from a local store. Some of the cases had splits at the neck of the casings and some didnt. What I also found is that all rounds fired, about 15, have a very slight bulge at the base of the cartridge. Is this just a crappy batch of ammo or my gun?

I got my new to me sig today from LC Action. It has the holster wear that I assumed it would have but from what I can tell the frame rails look great. Mostly shiny black still with just a little bit of dark gold showing through in a couple spots. I only got to put 15 rnds through it because it started raining on me but I seem to shoot it quite well. The night sites seem a little dim but I have no others to compare them to. I also think I may change out the grips for something else just because these look old and dirty. For $435 I think it will make a fine range gun which is what I bought it for. If anyone is on the fence about buying one of these, I say go for it. I might get pics up later.

*Judge Dredd 'Black Box' recorder/spy kit for guns unveiled*
*An accident you say, sergeant? But you reloaded. Twice*

A major weapons manufacturer has exhibited a so-called "Black Box" which could be fitted to small arms - for instance rifles or submachine guns - and record details of every shot fired, potentially including location, target and even user identity.

Image: http://www.novarata.net/images/fn_black_box.jpg
Government spy kit invades the last bastion of freedom.
The Black Box (http://www.fnherstal.com/index.php?id=272&backPID=266&productID=126&pid_product=298&pidList=266&categorySelector=8&detail=) has been developed by Belgian-headquartered company FN Herstal, a famous name in the gun world. The new gizmo goes on show tomorrow at the MILIPOL securo-expo in Paris.

The idea is that the Black Box electronics would be installed internally in a void space such as the pistol grip of an assault rifle. (It "fits in any weapon type", apparently.) The gadget would run on a non-replaceable battery lasting ten years or 100,000 shots - covering the weapon handily between major overhauls.

The initial uses of the Black Box would, according to FN, be in logistics and maintenance. The in-gun shot counter would keep track of how many rounds were being fired, updating a future soldier's digital comm/puter system - Land Warrior (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10/30/green_berets_land_warrior/) or some similar rig - as it went, using some form of wearable networking.

Not only would the soldier then know automatically how many shots he had fired without the need to keep count or look at his magazines and pouches, but so would his team leader - and higher commanders would be warned in advance if their people seemed likely to run out of ammo.

From the armourer's point of view, a permanent record of how many rounds a gun has had put through it would be invaluable - and even more so, the knowledge of how rapidly they had been fired. Various parts of a weapon degrade much more rapidly when a gun is being fired fast, owing to the high temperatures reached. The Black Box would also keep a record of stoppages as well as successful shots, which would help in identifying faults.
But 'Black Boxes' aren't really for maintenance - they're for the subsequent investigation

So far, so uncontroversial. But FN seem to hint at other uses to which the gizmo might be put - indeed the choice of name offers a broad hint that investigations following a shooting or a firefight might make use of the records held in weapons used. Monitoring might go further than this, with the company saying:

The FN Black Box can also communicate useful information to the chain of command during a mission. It contains the identification number of the weapon and, thus, can indirectly identify the soldier. When coupled to a GPS, it can transmit its identification and localization data to the upper level of the command through the communication equipment of the soldier.

Most current and planned digital-soldier rigs already include GPS, in some cases enhanced by the use of other navigation aids. It seems that with the addition of Black Box, commanders may know not just how many shots their troops fire and when, but where they were as they did so - perhaps in real time. The scheme is somewhat reminiscent of the idea, sometimes suggested (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/05/08/washington_gun_tube_plan/) for US police, of automatic gun cameras intended to record the target of every shot fired for use in subsequent investigations.

Fans of Judge Dredd will recall that his personal sidearm, the Lawgiver pistol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawgiver), had capabilities akin to this in some versions - perhaps going as far as the tagging of every round fired with the user's DNA signature. (Though in the movie, even this level of record-keeping didn't suffice to protect an innocent Dredd from being busted by his fellow judges for a crime he hadn't committed.)

FN don't mention DNA bullet-tagging specifically, but they do say that the Black Box is intended to form just part of their planned "Armatronics™" kit, "a fully integrated system of electronic solutions mounted on or inside a weapon. Additional enhancements for increased functionality to the system are on the horizon as new technologies are explored."

The introduction of such systems might be used as much to keep tabs on cops or troops as to help them out with logistics and maintenance. And Black Box guvmint gunbutt spy modules required in every licensed weapon, doubtless remotely accessible by federal busybodies, would seem like a vaguely plausible bogeyman to disturb the sleep of many a righteous, free, gun-toting American.

Even more chillingly for those who see personal weapons as a guarantee of freedom from government oppression, FN speak of the Black Box as a "weapon manager", hinting that feds, military superiors etc. might even be able to disable a gun remotely.

Sig P229 SCT, review and pics

I picked up my new 229 SCT (.40SW) on Friday afternoon and took it to the range on Saturday morning. Ran 150rds of Federal 180gr thru it with no issues.

I know many people have no faith left in the recent QC or lack thereof from Sig, but when I had an ejector come loose on my Mosquito Sig's CS took care of me quickly and painlessly.

First thing I noticed was that the thing came with the short trigger. I have somewhat large hands and I didnt think I would like having to pull the trigger back as much on the SA pulls. I did not like it as I suspected, and Im kinda dissapointed in the fact that I now have to get a standard trigger just to make it feel "right."

Shooting wise as many know it is great to shoot. Took some getting used to the POA compared to my XD, but once I did it sure did its part, very accurate for a relatively short barrel IMO. I look forward to many more rounds, and some good quality time spent with this one...

I couldnt help but miss my XD9T while shooting this thing, having over 4300rds thru the XD it now feels like an extension of my arm, needing to learn a new grip (due to Sig controls), new trigger and new sight picture didnt yield XD like results at first but I cant expect that the first range trip out. As much as I like this Sig, I still LOVE my XD. Time will tell if any future handgun purchase can pull me away from the XD:)

For those that dont know the difference between the SCT and standard 229 are it comes with 4, 14rd mags, Truglow fiber optic/tritium front sight, Sig lite rear sights, and front cocking serrations. The sights are VERY bright at night, much brighter than the Mepros on my XD.

Some pics after the range session.

Me and a buddy of mine are both about to buy some m91-30 nagant rifles from classic arms. It says its 10 dollars more for a hand select model and that it will guarantee matching serials and no counterbores. Me and him have NO IDEA what this means.

Is there anything we should look out for, does anyone know of any BETTER deals going on right now.

Any help would be GREAT.

Curious range day after renting a Glock 23

I had a 23 a few years ago and I really liked it. When I decided to purchase a pistol last year, there was a 3-4 month wait on getting another Glock 23 so after some research, I picked up an XDM40 and I really like it. While I was practicing today, for fun I thought I would rent a 23 so that I could directly compare it to my XDM and I was very surprised at my experience.

First, the size of the 23 struck me. I didn't remember it being so incredibly small compared to the XDM40. It (the 23) would certainly be a better concealed carry pistol. I do like how the weapon felt in my hands but not more or less than the XDM40. It was also considerably lighter. The magazine was polymer coasted, however, and felt cheap. It was also limited to 10 rounds.

Second, the trigger pull on the Glock was exceedingly crisp and short. I had completely forgotten about that. I don't mind the pull on my XDM40 but after directly comparing it with the pull of the 23 again, I am absolutely in the market for a trigger job on my XDM.

Finally, and the thing that most surprised me, as I was trading '5's with each of the pistols, I discovered that after firing five rounds on the Glock that my aim was noticeably better when firing my XDM. By that I mean my hits were more tightly grouped and better centered around my point of aim.

At the end of the day, finishing up with my last 50 rounds with my XDM40, at 10 yards I grouped two sets of 25 shots each in tight groups of about 3-4 inches each. One on a center of mass ('9') and one on the head or a standard silhouette target. I did that pulling the trigger about once a second changing mags quickly but not furiously fast. It's probably the best I have shot consistently at that distance that I can remember.

I have no explanation for that except that perhaps switching pistols forced me to be very aware of my grip and how I would pull the trigger since both weapons feel so very different.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Also, in another weird coincidence, my XDM40 failed on me for the first time after about 4500-5000 rounds. I was halfway through a box of 100 S&W 165 grain ammo that I had just picked up at Walmart when two shots failed to push the slide back far enough to eject the spent casing. It happened within 1 minute of each other and has never happened to me before (ever, with any pistol) before or since. I fired another 150+ rounds without any trouble at all. Strange.

I am trying to decide which 9mm to get next. I currently have several 1911's (mostly Kimber), 3 CZ's SP01, P01, and a 75B. Now I want something different, I have got the list down to two. Springfield XD M 9 mm, or a Smith & Wesson M&P Pro 9 mm.
Anyone owning both or having shot both please give me your reasons why you like one or the other. I'm a Bullseye shooter and like a very accurate gun. This will be a range gun for the most part. My CCW is the CZ P01.
It looks like its time to go plastic LOL.

Thanks,

Suggestions for a new rifle?

I'm looking to buy a new or used rifle with a scope - or without a scope and add one immediately. It will only be used for medium- to longer-range target shooting at an outdoor range, so I'm keeping my budget low.

I'm looking to spend $500-$600. I know I'm not going to get terrific equipment for that kind of money, and I'm OK with that, as it won't be used for hunting or competition.

As this rifle will also be used by my 12- and 10-year old sons, I don't want something with a lot of kick to it. So I'm thinking of a .223, which also has the benefit of being cheap to shoot, and .223 ammo seems to be available enough these days. I'm also considering .308, but would rather stick with the smaller round for now.

BTW, we have a cheap .22 now with iron sights only. It has no scope mount and even if it did, I'd rather get something that can shoot longer distances. (A couple good excuses to buy a new rifle, huh?)

So I'm hoping for some suggestions for a cheaper rifle and scope, either a package deal or separate. Hoping for brand, model and caliber ideas from the more experienced folks on the forum here.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

Several months ago, I purchased a Remington 870 12 guage Tactical. The extended magazine tube, and low maintenance coatings on the receiver and barrel were the main draws as I wanted it for home defense. I got it home and began disassembly for cleaning when I noticed that the barrel was stamped "20 Guage". It kinda took me for a loop for a minute, but then I thought there must be some mistake. After checking the serial numbers on the box and weapon (yup, they matched), I tried the choke wrench. It fit the 12 guage choke tube just fine. So, now my thought was that Remington had made a mistake. Turns out they did and had recalled the weapons in question. My questions to you are, have you heard of this and would you return it or keep it. I'm leaning towards just keeping it as is. Makes a good conversation piece. Taurus has the 24/7 pistol and I have a Remington 20/12 shotgun. :)

I paid $550. Fair deal?

OK, so I picked up a BSA .22 Special 3-9X32 scope from Gander Mountain for $40 Monday to replace a $6 Wal-Mart special air rifle scope. Mounts very securely to the thin rail on my Marlin 795. Unlike the cheap Daisy scope, the BSA is very clear and precise. The fact that there are 2 Allen screws per ring makes me feel that it's less likely to walk off the back of the rifle. The image at 9X is as crisp and clear as 3X. A hole in a paper target is easily visible at 50 yards with the scope zoomed in. Adjustments are simple and do not require tools. Anyone looking for a decent cheap scope for their .22, I'd recommend it.

So it was a beater at $159 from CDNN. Excellent shooter, extremely accurate w/ cheap military cartridges.

Black is a mix of satin and flat of MOLY RESIN

OD Green is CeraKote thermal cure baked in the oven.

I completely disassembled the frame and slide and sandblasted everything. Internals were polished but I coated the trigger bar with Moly Resin as it's self lubricating. I had to use DuraCoat HK Black for the grips as the grips could not get heated above 180 degreese before they started to deform

I'm in the middle of another CZ-82 right now. it's gonna be stainless steel (CeraKote) on satin Black (Moly Resin) with the barrel polished to a mirror shine. It's too humid right now to use the air brush, so I'm just sitting on it at the moment.
I think this OD Green/Black on is going up for sale, but it's hard to sell such a nice handgun, both aesthetically and functionally
