Change in Mag seating?

Hello all. Just picked up the 4" service full-size XD .45 yesterday and I am in love lol. I've rented the pistol several time to shoot and decided to buy it.

I came across something interesting lastnight though. When seating a magazine of practice ball ammo the magazine has no resistance And drops freely but when I went to seat one loaded with Remmington Golden Saber defense rounds there was some resistance the last 1/4 inch or so. It feels like you have to push agaist a spring before it will lock in place.

Dropping the mag is also more difficult as it is under tension now; the mag release needs to be pushed harder than 'normal'. I've tried loading less than capacity in the magazine with no change. I am a former Devil Dog and have fired numerous firearms but have never come across this.

Thoughts? Thank you all in advance and I have enjoyed reading old post on these forums to build up some knowledge on the XD before purchase. I look forward to some more great ideas.

I just installed some Truglo TFO fiberoptic/tritium sights on my .45 compact. Went to the range and was suprised by my groups. At 7-10 yards it shoots about 3-4 inches high. For kicks I shot at 25 yards and the group was about 12 inches high. Anyone else hae this issue? Anybody have ideas on how to fix this? I am at a loss. Thanks

Let me preface this by saying, carrying 100 rounds of .45 ACP in pack ain't as bad as people say...

We went camping this weekend, and the SA XD45 Tactical was in my Bianchi M9 (they make it for 5" bbls, and it fits like a CHAMP!). So we're setting up pop bottles at 35-40 yards, and just making them spin off the branches. Finally? I kneel, take aim, and shoot for the branch... WHAP!

Splits it perfectly! Yep! Shocked! It may be luck? But I'm claiming it!

A final wipe down with a towel, a mag of Federal Hydra Shocks back in, and back in the holster. All the newbies who haven't shot a pistol before were commenting on how comfortable it shoots. :D

So I ordered some Ranier Ballistics 200 grain flat points for reloading. I shot about 40 of them today and danged if one out of every mag had a failure to feed and it was always a few rounds into the mag. I tried all of my mags and it happened with all of them.

Is it the flat point bullet or is it something else with the gun. 45 tactical by the way.

I've watched these forums for a while now and I see a lot of problems discussed on the forum. Part of this may be due to the number of owners of the XD, because I own an XDm 9mm and it's been 100% reliable in 1,000+ rds, and I'm considering buying an XD45.

What kind of round counts have been put through your XD45s and how many stoppages, breakages, or other failures have resulted in firing?

Edit: I should also ask what year your XD was manufactured. Thanks guys.

Gents,

I am finally ready to buy a XD Compact .45. Problem is I have no idea where to get it (I live in TX) and who will sell one to me without ripping me off.

No problem buying one a year old...any older than that bothers me.

Any hints or suggestions? I own a Walther p99QA I am willing to trade- never really liked this gun.

Thanks,

It had been a while since I have owned one. After realizing I need a plastic framed firearm I bought a Sig 250 Compact only to find out it is ammunition sensitive. So I am thinking of coming back to the XD 45 family. Glock is not a consideration because I have owned 11 or 12 of them and they don't impress me anymore. They are good guns just not what I want because of they need to shoot FMJ practice rounds when stock.

Now the question. Is the XD Ammunition Sensitive? Will it shoot SWC rounds for example?

Thank you,
GW

Well after having buddies point me into looking at glocks....I picked the XD 45acp compact and never felt better! This is my second gun, but not my last! I found this site through someother XD owners. Now have to find a better holster for IWB and a OWB with tactical light. Glade to be to learn a lot and chat! 8-)

Thanks to all those that replied to the thread I posted about XD-45 pricing.
I picked up the lightly used, seller stated 300 rounds fired, XD-45
this morning. Overall great condition, very happy for the $420 purchase price.

I have been having a real hard time getting this style to work. It will feed the hard ball reloads and factory stuff with no problem but when I switch to the tc bullets I get fe not quite a stove pipe I was wondering if polishing the feed ramp would make a difference or if the oal is to short the load is 4.7gr of tite group and the bullets drop at 240gr. any suggestions would be helpful thanks in advance

Now obviously this is out of a pistol and a .45

by perform i mean expand. Do you prefer the ones that sort of just flatten out into a disk shape? Or the ones where its more of the copper jacket peeling back and leaving sharp petals?

This isn't a "which one kills them better" post. Simply which kind of expansion you prefer in a hollow point.

And obviously an expanded hollow point is better than a non expanded. And well we all know that a .45 is just better than anything else :mrgreen::twisted:

Went to the mountains to visit family. My cousin has a cabin OTG, and has a rifle range put in his front yard since there is a mountain about 100 yards across from his place.

Keep in mind, I'm WAY OTG!

So I load the XD45 Tactical, use the free holster because I don't need anything more than that, and proceed to shoot some from a rifle. Well down the road comes this guy. It seems the railroad is doing some work about 400 yards back off the main dirt road, and he was looking for a place to show a Newbie how to shoot.

We welcome him to pop cap, and he trounces back with his friend... and a Springfield Armory 1911! When we realize that we're: A.) 10 miles from any main road. B.) In the middle of NO WHERE. C.) Two SA guys meet.

It was definitely a good sign.

They shoot, Newb' is HOOKED! So they go on, and I shoot about 100 rounds out of the XD... to the point I was making the empty Heinken Pony Keg shake at 35 yards.

As I shot? The gun just got better, and better. Either I was improving or the weapon was breakin' in perfectly. When my Pop said, "Try to hit that can from here." I singled in, sighted the can, did the half breath, and gently sqqquuueeeezzed the trigger. That can popped in the air like it had bottle rocket attached!

Yeah, I'm VERY glad I traded in my "BLOCK 21" on this thing... Once more? Carried it concealed for four days, and NO ONE noticed! It just sits pretty. I forgot to carry some hollowpoints to play with to see if it liked something better than the Fed Hydrashock.

Seller needs money,.....

What do you guys think? Mint XD-45 bi-tone, $420,....Good deal, great deal?

...........for a GLOCK.

Now some of you will probably scream sacrilege etc.....but I gotta tell ya.....with me having to return my then beloved SA XD 45C back to SA just to get the slide unstuck because "I wasn't paying attention to how I re-assembled it.." really left a sour taste in my mouth. To SA's credit, they did un-stuck the slide and return it to me in about two weeks, but SA did not replace the captured guide rod/recoil spring as it was gouged during SA's attempt to get the slide un-stuck. Can't find an after-market guide rod/recoil spring and I should not have had to ask SA to replace it when it was obvious that it was damaged ....supposedly covered under warranty. This was my CCW pistol, good thing it wasn't my only one.

I was hoping someone would be able to post a pic comparing the XD45 Service and the XD9 Subcompact. Reason is I am in the market for a back-up duty gun. My primary is the XD45. I would like to get a side by side visual of some various pics. The XD9 sub is on my list of possible BUGs. Not a real big fan of 9mm, but if its a less then 10ft gun, it will certainly due. And the familiarity of the XDs is certainly a plus. My wife was willing to get me the Ruger LCP prior to leaving, so if a .380 was possible, then so is a 9. Thats why I wanted to include the Sub 9.Yes, I would normally go to the gun store myself, however, I am currently deployed in Korea. So Ive got some time for window shopping. I would greatly appreciate some comparison pics.

Well went into my local gun store and had them put in an order on a 4" all black XD compact .45

in my long run of gun searching i had narrowed it down to a FNP-45 and the XD .45 Compact.

The deciding factor was the price. XD is 519 + tax and the FNP was 650 + tax.

I've held both (never got to fire either, no one around had them for rent) and dry fired them, liked the trigger on both. Really liked the feel of both in my hands.

The FNP is still on my list, just right now i didn't want to spend 141 extra dollars for it. that'll be another day when i have more saved up.

EDIT: the 519 is with an extra 13 round mag with the grip extension, so not only was it cheaper still then the FNP, but it was cheaper with another mag

All you Xd 45 Compact Owners, this might be a dumb question but does your hand ever get pinched from the gap in between the handgrip and the mag adapters? Also does the grip feel pretty solid or is it kinda loose and unstable feeling with a mag in? One more, for those of you who had a 45 service grip-chopped and converted, any pros, cons to having that done does work just as good with mags as a compact? I have a 45 service and was considering getting a grip chop. Any advice would be appreciated.

A buddy of mine has the 4'' XD service model in 45.
His holster says XD-40-4. It fits perfect!

If i buy a XD-45-4 how will it fit my XD?
Will it not be as tight as His? Whats the difference?(anybody own one?)
Any info on the Fit Code would be great thank you
does the -4 stand for 4 inch if so why do they ask me the barrel length even though it's in the fit code.

Also they have this holster on sale but not for springfield I guess only certain models are Over Stock / Closeouts (http://www.donhume.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=413).

I wanna get the H715-M w.c in Black.
H715-M W.C. [H715-M] - $29.30 : Don Hume Leathergoods, manufactures high quality leather and nylon goods. (http://www.donhume.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_5&products_id=35)

(I have the Compact in 45 witch I believe is the same size as the service)

So a few weeks ago I tried to get a .45 Tactical, but things fell through and I ended up with a .45 Service. I love the gun, but instantly realized I made a mistake! I should have gotten the compact 4" since I would inevitably be getting the tactical in the future. I realized that if I ordered a .45 Tactical compact I could swap the slides and have a compact 4" for carry and a full sized tactical with an Insight m3x to sit on my bedside table.

I ordered the Compact Tactical today and should have it in my hands Wednesday. I will post the pics after the swap and after the M3X is added, it will be a mean gun! I also went with the night sights, I really like them on the 9sc.

.45 compact + match grade barrel

Howdy all. I wanted to tighten up my groupings with my XD Compact .45 and had a Barsto barrel professionally installed. After approx 900 rounds the locking lug sheared off. Sent it back to the installer and got a new barrel installed.

After approx 1K rounds on the replacement Barsto, the locking lug sheared on that as well. Mr Bar-Sto himself wanted to examine my particular pistol and fit another barrel. He found the locking block design had been changed by Springfield without notification and fitted another barrel. Sure enough - the third barrel's locking lug sheared.

At that point I said I was done and went back to the original factory barrel. The accuracy of the original isn't bad, but I'd still like to have more/better.

So - does anyone have personal experience with the Storm Lake match grade barrels? Did it increase your accuracy? Was it worth the cost of purchase and professional installation?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I've had an XD 45 Service model for about two years now. Up until this point, I've only used it as a range gun with 230 grain FMJ and lead reloads. Total round count is probably only 750 rounds. No malfunctions of any type during this time period.

I recently decided that I would like to add the XD to my carry rotation and started testing it with some hollow points. First I tried Federal Hydra-Shock 230Grain rounds. With slow fire I get occasional jams with this round. As soon as I do any rapid fire, or even a double tap, I get almost always experience a malfunction. (Failure to feed). What happens is that when the new round is stripped from the magazine, the tip of the bullet slams into the hood of the barrel/chamber. Hope that makes sense. I'll try to get a picture the next time it happens.

I also tried some basic Remington 230Grain JHP rounds with the same results.

Has anyone else here had trouble with shooting hollow point ammo reliability in the XD45? Is there a specific self defense round that is known to work well in these guns?

Thanks for any tips/suggestions !!

how long will a mag last?

I've got an XD45 and an XD45C. For the past couple of months, I've had them loaded to the gills, in the safe, for easy access should trouble come knocking. (I'd have 'em in the nightstand, 'cept that I've got kids in the house and can't take the risk.)

Anyway, it occurred to me that keeping the mags fully loaded was probably going to do them in early... So, I totally unloaded them, and figured I'd go for the HD shotgun if ever there were a need. However, having my XDs unloaded seems like a waste. :-)

So, looking for opinions on how long I can expect an XD mag to last when loaded to capacity, and left that way for long periods of time. One option is to load one of them, and leave the other unloaded... and then switch 'em periodically, like weekly.

Curious what others do/think.

(Was tempted to get a revolver, though they don't do much for me, just to avoid the issue.)

Thanks.

XD 45 Tactical as a duty weapon with Federal HST?

My brother, a Police LT in SoCal, is considering going to a 5" XD Tactical 45, because his Les Baer SRP just doesn't have the capacity he wants for the environment he is working in now. There may be an issue, in that their department only uses Federal HST.

I have read a few reports about XD45s not feeding this round very well. And I have had a couple of rare FTFs with HST in my own XD45C, although it gobbles up everything else, except semi-wadcutters. It seems clear that there is at least a potential feeding problem with wide-mouthed HPs like HST, and flat nosed projectiles.

Does anybody know how widespread the issue is, and whether there is anything that can be done to make an XD45 feed HST more reliably? For example is there any slight re-shaping of the feed ramp that could increase reliability with this round?

For my own purposes with my 45C, I just went back to Federal Hydra Shoks and all is well. Unfortunately, choosing another round is not an option for my brother as it is for me.

Anyway, I'm going to order the SuperTuck for my XD45 Service w/thumb safety.
Did you get the Combat Cut? If not do you wish you had?
Without the cut can you get a full grip on the weapon? This is my concern.

Tell me how yours is set up and how you like it.

Has anyone applied or recieved a "temporary license to carry a handgun to a non-resident?"

I head to MA two to three times a year and would love to carry legaly.

I found this on the NRA-ILA site, it appears, to me, that i could possibly recieve a permit?

"The colonel of state police may issue a temporary license to carry a handgun to a non-resident, alien, or resident who does not live within the jurisdiction of a local licensing authority. A temporary license must clearly indicate whether it is a class A or B license. The fee for a temporary license is $50. Temporary licenses are good for one year, and renewable at the discretion of the colonel of state police. Unlike regular class A and B licenses, temporary licenses may not be used to purchase firearms. " - http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/MASL.pdf

I am going to contact the state police and see what happens.

to like the XD45 compact enough for duty carry. What I learned is this; I can't find anything I like more than the 1911 platform. I qualified with it satisfactorily, albeit with lower scores than I'm used too. Its embarrassing to not be in the top 5% of the office when I has a track record of it.

I picked up the XD because of the reported similar ergonomics, increased capacity, and the reputation its been built up to on boards like this.
I shoot it just "alright". By no means as well as I shoot my Kimber 1911.

Leather is hard to find off-the-shelf, especially for the magazines. Duty holsters are a tough find too. I hate having a cop-shop order me in a holster or anything else, then I don't like it.

I think that for the time being it will be my RV gun; to be kept in the lockbox bolted to the floor of my RV. I like the gun, but I cannot place any of my 1911s with it.:-(
I'd still pick it over a Glock any day. I refuse to drink the cool-aid.

I bought a 4 inch compact XD 45. I love the gun it is great. So much better than the Glocks (not bad guns, just not an XD). I am now wondering if I should have gotten the 5 inch for ballistic reasons. Lots of people say the 4 inch is too short to get the proper velocity, especially in the 230 grain. Some say the hollowpoint might not expand as it should. Does anyone have any real world performance from the 4 inch maybe compared to the 5 inch? Maybe some affirmation that my 4 inch barrel is ok lol? Thanks.

Edited with pics ;)

Here are all my babies together. S&W 329PD scandium 44 Mag, Taurus 605 .357 Mag snubnose, XD .45 ACP compact, Ruger LCP .380

44 Mag is my outdoors/hunting/hunting back up gun, only 28 ounces. The .357 snubnose is my SUV car and sometimes concealed carry gun. XD is my all around workhorse and nightstand gun. Sometimes used for concealed carry if it is a little "hot" where I am going, every now and then used in the field. Ruger LCP is pretty much everyday concealed carry just because it is so easy and I otherwise probably wouldn't carry most days.

I'd like to see what your setups look like.

Me? I'm 5' 10" @ 180lbs. I carry now with the BlackHawk! Serpa with the paddle at about 2-2:30-ish.

Thanks!

I am going to send in my XD 45 compact to Springfield to have night sights installed. After doing some research with local gunsmiths and folks who sell night sights, the price is about the same (if not a few bucks cheaper) plus SA will be doing the work...can't go wrong there. Or can I? Is there something that I need to be aware of?

Carry XD45c needs lube every 2wks or jams

I usually take my concealed carry XD45c to the range once a week. Normally it's completely reliable with any type of ammo. However, if it's left longer, say two weeks or more before use, it turns into an unreliable hunk of crap with stovepipes and FTF every 10 rounds or so.

I've observed it for a few months and can only think of one thing: the weekly range trips gives it a chance to go through some cleaning and lube. (I always clean it after going to the range.) If it's two weeks or more since last use, I put a bit of oil in there and it's fine.

Just wondering if anyone else has found this problem? How can I avoid this? However much I love this XD, I can't trust it with my life if the thing needs constant babying.

Is there something I'm just not doing right?

More info:
* Hoppes no. 9 lubricant
* Usually carried in a gun bag (that's the law in my location)
* Shooting FMJs and lead reloads at the range
* I live in a humid climate
