Powder question?

Hi guys!

I'm new to metallic reloads and was wondering what everyones powder of choice is and why. I'm loading 45ACP at 185gr and 230gr. And 9mm at 115gr and 124gr. All jacketed bullets.

My 9mm is xd9sc and the 45 is the tactical model.

On my buddies suggestion, I tried this combo for 45acp using the Hodgon and Hornady books.
230gr FMJ
4.9gr Titegroup
WLP primer

The first 3 or 4 shots at 7 yards are pretty good, then start to drift down and to the left a little. At 25 yards, I had 5 out of 6 in a 4 inch target, first one didn't even hit the paper tho!

I haven't loaded 9mm yet, so no paper data on that yet, maybe in a couple weeks or so.

I'd love to be able to use the same powder for 9mm and 45acp, but if not, that's ok too. I'm just looking for something that will be quite accurate for plinking, and for SD hollow points too.

Thanks in advance!

Defense ammo vs. plain ol FMJ

Im about to start carrying my XDm 9mm concealed, I'm setup for Missouri training next month. I see some mentioning of "defense" ammo and on the shelf at my local GS.

Is there a REAL difference here that I must carry it? I understand (mostly) about expansion, penetration, jacketed hollow points, FMJ, I'm just a little skeptical about "defense ammo kool-aid" (my term).

I kinda figure that if I ever had to use my weapon I'm carrying 19+1, I don't mind shooting 1+ if that's what it takes. I'd think more about a 1 shot, one stop power if I were carrying either of my 1911A1's with 7rds, I'd want to get that first shot stop if I didn't have a high cap magazine like the XDm.

Just wanting some advice... :)

*let's not have the .45/.40/.380/debate about those being better than 9mm...I'm carrying that round and that's that. :D

Bad Tarnished Brass

Alright I have tried everything from new finish to actual case polish and some of this brass is still dang near black. I have also switched up my media to see if that works. 50/50 rice and walnut shells, 100% walnut shells, 100% corn cob.

Nothing works. I know the tarnish wont hurt anything and I have loaded some of it, but I would like to get them as clean as I can.

So what do you do to make your brass shine?

puff of smoke

So I went to the range the other day. I was shooting WWB in 9mm out of two pistols. The first was my xd9-sc. The other was a glock 22 with 9mm conversion barrel. When shooting the Glock there was a huge puff of smoke after each round.

I noticed a similar scenario with my buddy's wheel guns. He had a full sized .357 and a light weight snub nosed .38. The .357 with .38 rounds big puff of smoke. The little guy? No smoke.

What is it about the combination of ammo/gun that causes the puff of smoke phenomenon?

with the shortage of JHP i was limited like everyone else with what i can get my hands on without getting ripped off. of course everyone does their research and so on and so on to they can feel comfortable in what they carry on a daily basis. At first i was carrying Winchester PDX1 147gr i felt good with them but not great (maybe because of the debate of light vs. heavy) so i got my hands on Hornady Critical Defense 115gr (the one with the brass primer) like with the PDX1 i felt good but this ammo is to new with the rubber tip for me to feel confident to carry daily... finally day after day looking at ammotogo.com and other sites i was able to get my hands on Federal HST 147gr (tactical) this is ****** this is one of maybe three different types of ammo that no matter what weight, what test media is being used, who is using it, it is always consistent in its performance. also when the HST is in full bloom it is the most beautiful flower i have ever seen.

Bullet setback pressure question

I know that a lot of posts have been made about bullet setback. However I am not finding any post that may answer my question.

I have a magazine full of .45 ACP. I have been unloading and re-chambering the same round numerous times. Now I know that some people will say to rotate it out and don't worry about it, but it has been done and curious about the following. I can visibly see by the naked eye see that the bullet has been set back in the case. My question is has anyone actually performed tests to see what kind of pressure changes are created by bullet setback? Is this a danger for a Kaboom? I really would like to see if someone has actually done pressure tests on rounds that have a bullet noticeably setback in the case.

I generally use CCI large pistol primers with 6.3 grs Univ Clays and a 200gr bullet in my .45s. Now I cannot locate any large pistol primers in my area. I do have several thousand magnum large pistol primers on hand. Has anyone ever used these in a .45? Do I just need to reduce the powder charge? Will the hotter primer cause more lead build-up in my barrels? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What is the dirtiest modern handgun ammo you've used?

I bought my XD (my first handgun) a few months ago, and while reading on several forums and various ammo web sites to learn, I kept seeing references to "dirty ammo". At first, I didn't know what that meant, and eventually I realized that people were referring to how cheaper ammo either produces alot of smoke or leaves alot of residue on the gun.

Great, so I now understood that, but I had never experienced it.

Never, that is, until I shot my first box of *Remington UMC .40 S&W FMJ*.

Previous to that point, I had only bought the cheapest brass range ammo I could find, which included Blazer Brass, Magtech, and WWB, so I thought I was already on the low end. But I never noticed anything that would make me think any of those were particularly 'dirty'.

But when I shot that first round of Remington UMC, I literally stopped, surprised and confused. There was so much smoke in front of me that I had to wait a few seconds to see the target clearly again. It was like I was starting a campfire on lane 6 of the range. When I stopped after any given shot, there would be smoke slowly pouring out of the barrel and out of the back of the slide, like the gun itself was still smoldering.

I've shot 3-4 boxes of it now, and confirmed that every one is just as dirty. Maybe it's tolerable outdoors with a decent breeze, but it's horrible stuff for an indoor range.

I'm assuming that mass produced ammo might use different batches or lots of primers and powder that result in the same brand being dirty with one batch and not so dirty with another, so maybe not all Remington UMC centerfire is this bad, but my batch certainly is noteworthy for the mess it makes.

I'm thinking of selling it off at a bargain price though a local gun forum. Maybe I should get a video of the phenomenon before I sell it all.

Do you guys have any similar stories of particular brands of handgun ammo that were particularly dirty, and have you ever found that the same brand can vary significantly from batch to batch?

New from Hornady is a steel-case 7.62x39mm load topped with the company's highly regarded 123-grain V-MAX. A steel-case 5.45x39mm load with an expanding bullet will follow shortly. (Photo: David M. Fortier)

Can buying ammo in bulk raise flags?

I'm curious what it would take to get the attention of any agencies. Firearms, for example... it's not illegal to purchase a lot in a short span, but at some point flags will be raised and someone might keep an eye on you.

Just wondering if the same could apply for ammo? Obviously buying 1 or 2k at a time wouldnt' be a big deal, but what if you were to buy 5-10k at once (higher chances of getting the same lot number and perhaps a little more consistency.) Would that number of rounds raise any flags? Would the tradeoff between the same lot number be worth it, or would one be better off just placing several smaller orders? All opinions are welcome!

Does anyone have any experience with these rounds?

They are heavy (compared to 180g) and very fast out of the muzzel. Any thoughts on using these rounds for self defense?

Also, what's the difference between the two none hollow point rounds besides a wider, flatter nose?

Recommended I ask this here after raising the issue in the 45 room.

I roll my own ammo for my 45 tac. Because the Ranier 200 grain flat points were the only thing available for awhile at Midway that's what I got. Shot about 50 of them the other day and one out of each mag wouldn't feed and it was always a few rounds into the mag.

Prior to this I have been shooting Hornady and Ranier HP's without even so much as a hint of a hiccup. Same with my mags ... all have worked great until this past weekend with the FP's.

It was recommended I polish the feed ramp. Is this above and beyond cleaning it well? Advice please!

BTW, my ammo is a 200 gr FP on 5.3 grains of Titegroup and an OAL of 1.225.

Any thoughts on the why's of the problem?

Here is my problem. At the outdoor range, they will not allow steel bullets. ( Issue with brushfires and causing a spark with the plates.

I would like to shoot my 7.62 and XD's at this range. I typically use Wolf ammo to keep the cost down.

Question is: What is the cheapest non-steel rounds that are still non-corrosive. I have been trying to figure this out, but the descriptions are not clear.

I think Fiocchi might be the answer, but are silver bear, or golden tiger non-steel?

Thanks,

I've got a reloader on my Christmas list. For a while I'm just planning on reloading for myself. The thought has crossed my mind though of starting a small business doing reloads. I'm not planning on trying to get rich off of it. Just something to do on the weekends and such for some money on the side.

The big issues I can see is making sure I have a safe environment based on BATF regulations (not forgetting the FFL) and good insurance in case someone shoots themselves with my ammo or something dumb.

It seems like if I start small, just selling to members of a local gun club or two I should be able to get started for just a few thousand dollars.

Does anyone here reload for profit? How does it work for you?

Went to the range today with a variety of powder loads for my 40.
Started with 4 grains of 231 Winchester and moved up .2 till I got to 5.8
4 was not enough to cycle the action well was getting FTE.
I loaded 5 rounds of each powder level.
I found that with the rounds I have 4.8 to 5.0 was very good.
I think I am going to do 4.9 and try that, should be perfect.
I am using 165 FMJ semi wadcuters.
makes a nice hole.
Now I need to do the same thing with my 9mm and 357 :)

I've been using a load from Hornady's 7th edition manual for 9mm with a 115 gr FMJ bullet and 6.4 gr of HS-6 powder which is their max load.

Hodgdon's website lists a max of 7.0 grains.

I found a copy of Speer #11 published in 1988 which lists 8.2 grains as max.

This guy has shot as high as 11.5 grains of HS-6. (http://www.thehighroad.us/showpost.php?p=5034830&postcount=4)

The reason I was looking into this is I believe the 6.4 grain load in Hornady is way too light to be a max. It's pretty dirty and makes a huge fireball at night.

11.5 seems insane, but I am wondering if even 7.0 is a true max load given what's in Speer #11. Heck, their starting load is 7.5 grains.

My deer rifle is a 7mm Rem Mag and I have been using 150grain rounds. I have been using 150grain bullets simply because most rounds on the shelf for this package are 150grain and the performance has been great out to 300yards.

I have recently noticed 2 things.
1. I have few stand locations that offer shots over 100yards
2. The 30-06 rounds my father in law use are 180grain and seems to have more "knock down" even when poorly shot.

I have no problem getting the job done with shot placement but I have recently seen how a well shot deer can disappear within 50 yards and be hard to find in the thick brush. I hate the thought of not recovering an animal.

I have found a few rounds online that are 175grain. If all else is equal how much more energy would I get from an extra 25-30grains? Would it be worth it?

Any changes I make in bullet will be for the 2010 season.

Thanks for all input

Reloading cost vs. benefit????

I have been researching getting a re-loading setup and I am simply having a hard time justifying the cost of reloading vs. buying factory new(or factory reloaded) ammo. From what I calculated it would cost me about 20-22c a round for 9mm and about 28-30c for .45. Thats using my own brass. I haven't done the calculation for .223 yet, but I am thinking its pretty close to what .45 is going to cost(cheaper bullet, but more powder). I buy cases of 9mm Lawman for 265 shipped so about 26c a round. I buy cases of XM193 for about 400 shipped(.40c a round).

I want to get a progressive, not a single stage turret press, simply because I know I will be reloading lots of ammo and would outgrow a single stage pretty quickly(and a progressive isnt that much more expensive than a single stage turret press). I have been looking at spending 800-1000 on a setup with the press, all accessories(scale, calipers, etc...) and dies and the shell holders for 9mm, .45ACP, and .223.

I guess I am having a hard time trying to justify the almost $1000 entry fee into re-loading when, according to my calculations, I would only be saving between 6 and 10 cents a round. Taking that $1000 and putting it into what I would be spending on components buys me almost 10k rounds of factory ammo(at current prices) before I would break even.

So I am wondering why even get into re-loading when the break even is somewhere around 10k rounds, which would be about 2-3 years of shooting at my current pace.

Without listing brands/etc, here is a list of equipment I'm going to get. I'm reloading 9mm and .45

-Press
-Carbide Die Set for both 9mm and .45 ACP
-Media Tumbler and Separator
-Electronic Caliper
-Electronic Scale
-Bullet Puller
- 2x Reloading Manual (Lee, Speer)

What am I missing? Or is that enough to get started and not wish I had item a or b?

I was in Bass Pro in Orlando over the weekend, hoped to at least grab a couple boxes of 9mm for the XDm... nope, out. The guy behind the counter gave me some sob story about how there was a nationwide backorder on 9mm and they couldn't get enough, et cetera. But he had plenty of .40 to sell, too bad I don't own a .40 cal. I bought some shotgun shells, since I needed them and left.

I was telling a buddy of mine about not being able to get 9mm, and he says he was just talking to a friend of his in Georgia that was at the Bass Pro in Savannah this weekend, and had the same problem... but opposite ammo. The Savannah store had piles and piles of 9mm, but gave him a similar sob story about .40 cal being on a nationwide back order. The same thing holds true for a lot of the smaller shops as well, plenty of .40 in FL, but no 9mm, and in GA plenty of 9mm but no .40

Are the distributors just stupid or did the gun industry finally figure out what oil companies figured out a long time ago? Scream "shortage" and jack up prices. I was hoping to get out to range and shoot, but all I've got is a mag loaded with hydra-shoks and a conspiracy theory

I just got started reloading .308 and I noticed when I press the bullet in it actually compresses the powder down. The powder is filled to the base of the neck and i heard the powder make a crunching noise just a bit as i seat the bullet. Im using a digital scale and lee safety scale to measure the powder and it is correct but the powder thing worries me. I havent shot any yet because i want to hear from you guys first.

Well, I came back from the range yesterday with probably more 9mm Luger than .40 S&W. I have a ton of 9 now, lol. So what do you guys do with it? I normally just sweep everything up and then sort when I get home, except aluminum since that's easy to sort from brass. It takes too long to separate at the range so I risk staying too long and getting charged another hour. So what do you do with the stuff you don't reload? I also have some .45 ACP, and .380 auto.

Anyone want to trade .40S&W for 9mm?

I switched to some 230grLRN handloads & was rewarded w/ nice 2" groups from my 1911PD, under that w/ my full size Springfield. I am so glad I don't have to shoot this all the time, really poor stuff accuracy wise, at least for me.

Is this just a typo or is this a whole NEW kind of ammo???

Wolf steel. I know the grey casings are made out of steel, but are the bullets steel too? They have a copper jacket but is the actual projectile lead or steel? Certain ranges won't let you shoot steel, but is that beacuse the steel casings get mixed up with the brass and are a pain to pick out or because the steel bullets damage the backstops? I've heard both. If so, does Wolf come in regular leaded bullets, FMJ, softpoint, or otherwise?

After a lot of reading past few months - several useful threads here on XD, elsewhere on the net, and of course several books - I got all the supplies and equipment gathered - some new, some used. Took my time loading my first 20. Worked way through each step at a very slow methodical pace, in fact three different days past week. I really enjoyed each step and learned a lot more once I put all the reading to actual hands on.

Shot the first 20, and here I am A OK - the gun did not blow up in my hands, nor did I have any squibs. Nice crisp snaps on each shot - in fact I loaded a few with factory fresh to get a one after the other comparison - could not tell any difference in sound nor feel. I am probably biased but did think my groupings were tighter at 15 yards then have been with factory ammo.

So next step is to get the "factory" going - I know should start slow, but based on 20 all working great, guess I'll step up to about a hundred for next batch. Can't find 9 mm anywhere near home, so going to focus on filling empty boxes with reloads for range practice.

To all those who have written advice here on XD - thank you.

To those who are thinking of getting into reloading - go for it - it is fun to learn, and the slow methodical processes are a nice break from daily rush that most of us have in our lives these days.

My local WM has a bunch of 12 gauge Buckshot right now.

Winchester 00 Buck 2 3/4" 9 pellet (15 count box) for $9.64
Winchester 00 Buck 3" 15 pellet (15 count box) for $12.47
Military Grade 00 Buck 2 3/4" 9 pellet (5 count box) for $4.87

I don't shoot a lot of 12 gauge, especially Buckshot so I don't know if this is about right or a good deal.

I would search but I'm on my Blackberry @ Midas getting rear-ended, eh.

Anyways, I keep Federal HST 124 +p in my XD9SC. While it has run flawlessly in my gun, I'm having a hard time locating any (a quick search I did today. I haven't done anything gun related in months so I'm unsure of its availability).

Since I'm down to less than 50 rounds left, I'm in need of getting some more premium sd ammo. I've seen several brands mentioned which I will research but do any of them come in 50 round boxes? I loved the HST because it was fairly cheap for 50 rounds whereas many other brands were the same price but for only 20 rounds.

I would like to avoid paying $1+/round if possible. So, what are the most cost effective, premium sd round? Again HST's appeared to be it but ...

Sorry so long.

Thanks in advance

So the other day on another forum someone posted a link to Cabela's for FEDERAL CHAMPION .22 box of 525 rds shipped to your door for $21.25.

Not the best deal in the world, but in today's market I think it's a fair price. Not only that, but they have them in stock. So I ordered a few thousand rounds. But then I noticed that if you just go to their site and look for the ammo, it's not listed. I can't find it anywhere. But the link is still good. I just ordered a few more thousand rounds and the order went through as well. My first order is already in the mail.

So my question is does Cabela's hide special deals like this often? If so how does one go about finding them?

BTW, if someone would like the link just PM me.
