Well sort of...

I recently completed the Underwater Police Science and Technology course as did several other members of our Dive Team. As a result of the class we obtained several certifications such as Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Search and Recovery. Well, today, I got to make a resue of sorts.

I get a call that some A## H@## has shot a duck in a retention pond with a bow. This was in a nice retirement community and NOT as a hunting act, it was on a BET. This resulted in the arrow being lodged in the duck's neck. I get on scene and see this female mallard flopping about with an arrow sticking out of its neck.

I put on my farmer John, fins, and gloves and strike a waterborne trail towards this duck. After some cat-and-mouse action, I finally catch the duck, swim to shore, and remove the arrow. Arrow was placed into evidence.

ASPCA and Animal Control respond and the duck is off to the vets and to the operating room. The duck seems to be ok and only time will tell. The Vet thinks the duck will make it.

The suspect is identified, contacted, and after I confront him about what a sick thing he has done, and the fact I have eye-witnesses that know hiom, he comes in and makes a full confession under Miranda. Witnesses made statements as well.

And there you have it, a water rescue...:D

ETA: Charge was Animal Cruelty, 1st Degree Misd. If the duck dies, it will go to a 3rd Degree Felony. What a sick thing to do just on a bet.

I currently carry my XDm as my duty weapon. I use bianchi accumold nylon belt and pouches. But I can't find a good duty holster for nothing. I currently am using a BH Serpa CQC mounted on a jacket slot duty holster deal... but I am very nervous carrying like that. I wish they made a level 3 serpa or atleast the level 2 serpa duty holster for the XD.

What are you guys using?

For the past ten years my wife was a youth worker working in a house with kids who have been taken away from there parents by the state for various reason from abuse/neglect to some horrible unthinkable things. well her house got shut down in a scaling down/ lack of funding move so she got laid off. While i am proud of her for the work with kids she has done her new job makes me nervous. She took a job as a guard at the kiddie jail. Her title is JPW juvenile program worker, but its a guard position at the juvenile detention center and while she is in training at least a dozen kids have recognized her and come up to say hi. And while i am probably being over protective i am worried about her safety, she's not as tough as she likes to think she is. And on a purely selfish note i am worried about her becoming a hard a$$ working in this type of rigidly structured environment (I like the sweet sensitive girly girl i married). I voiced my reservations to her before she took the job and basically got a yea i hear ya type of response. While assault on staff there are limited they do happen so am i just being paranoid or are my concerns valid. and by the way this facility has drop ceilings that wont allow kids to get out of their units but will allow them out of their rooms or into others room what kinda jail has drop ceilings for crying out loud. I realize that this is not a LEO position but thought you would have some good insight to the position

So today has been a fantastic day! I had my interview at the Sheriffs Office at 9am today. I believe it went really well and hopefully I'll get a call in the next week or so.

My 2nd ride along was great! And hopefully I'll get to do a night shift ride along. I almost got tazed today too!:D Some of the deputies were getting qualified and the Captain asked if I wanted to take a ride on it. You should have seen the look on their faces when I said yes. But I didn't get tazed since I'm not employed as of yet.

Thanks to all of those whom have been very helpful and provided encouragement!

*Police Sgt. Kimberly Munley credited with ending Fort Hood gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's rampage*

---Quote---
The hero cop who ended the bloody rampage at Fort Hood (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Fort+Hood) had been directing traffic moments before she confronted the gunman and pumped four bullets into him despite being shot herself.

Civilian police Sgt. Kimberly Munley (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Kimberly+Munley) and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire Thursday afternoon, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Bob+Cone) said Friday.

Munley, who had been trained in active-response tactics, rushed into the building and confronted the shooter as he was turning a corner, Cone said.
"It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer," Cone said.

Munley was only a few feet from crazed Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Nidal+Malik) Hasan when she opened fire.

Wounded in the exchange of gunfire, Munley was reported in stable condition at a local hospital.

The hero cop spent Thursday night phoning fellow officers to let them know she was fine and to find out about casualties in the attack - the deadliest ever on a military base in the U.S. (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/United+States), Cone said.

Cone said Munley's aggressive response training taught her that "if you act aggressively to take out a shooter you will have less fatalities."

"She walked up and engaged him," he said. He praised her as "one of our most impressive young police officers."

Minnesota RV license plate tabs

I was wondering if any MN officers can answer a question for me.

I have a step van parked in my driveway. It is registered as an RV in Minnesota. The tabs have expired (I don't drive it often, and not yet this year)(money is tight).

I just had a Community Service Officer knock on my door, and he told me he had mailed me a ticket for expired tabs, a ticket which I just spent the last 2 hours looking for, to no avail. If I had received a letter from the city, I would have opened it.

Anyway, I did a search online, and came across this:
http://www.hometownsource.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=8&Itemid=77&limitstart=50

You are mistaken on thinking it was 15 days. June tabs have until July 10th. July tabs would have until Aug. 10th, and so on. If it was a public lot, not a private lot, the charge is valid. Registration violations can't be enforced on private property. Registration violations don't go on your record, so it does not matter whose name it is in, as long as the fine gets paid. Thanks for asking, and good luck.

*Sgt. Curt S. Mowers*
*Public Information Office*
*MN State Patrol*
---End Quote---

My question is (I have searched at the Office of the Revisor, and came up empty), could one of you point me in the direction of the relevant statutes? MN Statute 169.79 makes reference to parking on a public highway, but not a private drive.

If it is true that registration violations cannot be enforced on private property, it would save me a lot of money that I don't have right now.

If it is a valid fine, then I suppose I'll just have to pay it.

Thanks, -bry

Heatherly of Carlyle was hired as an East St. Louis police officer in February 2007 by the city's police and fire board, according to a lawsuit filed by Heatherly in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis last year. The department, however, delayed his start date and didn't allow him to begin work until October 2007, the lawsuit says.

Heatherly claims he was fired in August 2008 after he had filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging that the city delayed putting him to work because he is white. As of this summer, that complaint remained pending.

Wyatt Frazer and Della Murphy, the police board members who hired Heatherly, were later fired. They filed a lawsuit this month against the city alleging that they were forced off the Police, Fire and Civil Service Board for their advocacy of a white candidate when the police chief's job was open in 2007. Their suit alleges the mayor said East St. Louis "wasn't ready to hire a white police chief."

Before being sworn in as an officer, Heatherly claims East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks and City Manager Robert Betts, who are both black, asked him "why he wanted to work with black people." They also accused Heatherly of being a racist, the lawsuit alleges.

Parks and Betts, who are named as defendants in the suit, didn't return calls seeking comment over two days. Lawyers representing them in the suit also didn't return calls on Thursday.

The board hired another white police officer along with Heatherly, but he was fired shortly after he started work, according to court records.

East St. Louis has a 97.7 percent black population, according to U.S. census records.

The lawsuit says Heatherly was fired by then Police Chief Michael Baxton for "insubordination."

Heatherly declined to comment on Thursday and referred all questions to his lawyers.

Heatherly's lawsuit seeks punitive damages "in an amount that is likely to deter them from similar conduct in the future" but doesn't name a specific dollar figure.

Hey all,
I know you get a lot of these threads ...but I really don't know who else to ask:D

I applied online to our local county sheriff's office and received an email saying that the testing will be on the 21st of this month.

It says they are doing the written, agility, first interview, and fingerprinting all on that day...

I wasn't really prepared for it to come up this soon so what do I need to do to prepare?

What would I wear to a testing day like this? It's cold here!

Will I find out my results right away?

It's a very large department...will I even have a shot at getting in with no experience or degree? (almost done with associates).

I am 21 with an immaculate record.

Will I actually have an interview and get to complete all of the tests or do I just get failed if I don't pass one?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this...I am excited but really nervous. I have never done anything like this before.

I was going to wait to order but they said Springfield is hard to nail down on shipping time and some things are as much as 4-8 months now. Since I didn't have to put any cash down I decided to order now and hope it gets here before I need it. I went with the .40 tac so I could share mags with my SC carry gun/BUG. Anyone else use the XD, more specifically the .40 tactical or any of the tactical length XDs?

So after watching "Party Heat" on True TV, it seem that a Law enforcement Officer in the state of Ca can use force to obtain a chemical test? (Blood Draw?) Is this the case for anything in CA. The Deputy on the show said they had a "right" to evidence? Are you saying that a person in Ca can not refuse the chemical test? Because even if they do you can use force to take it?

If this is the case shame on CA. I can in Florida only use this type of force if there is a DUI crash, involving serious bodily injury, or death.

We can't use force to take any chemical test. If they refuse we then suspend there drivers licence. They can apply for a hardship licence though. The suspension for a refusal in Florida is 12 months the first time and 18 months on a second refusal.
