Help with shooting technique using a Ruger SR22

I need some help trying to figure out what the problem is with her shooting technique. I have a video that is linked below since I can't seem to upload it without issue. Any constructive advice is helpful and would be appreciated.

This is my daughter and it's her very first time shooting, ever. I recently purchased the SR22 for several reasons. It's a 22lr, easy to shoot, it has ambi safety and magazine release and I got it for a good price [$350 new].

The first video is of her shooting the SR22 and as you can tell she is struggling to get that first, long DA trigger pull back. I have other videos but it's much of the same. Most times she pulls and it doesn't fire the round but you can hear the hammer drop. You can hear the range officer say, "Breathe". I talked about finger placement using the pad of her index finger and pulling straight back with precision. No jerking the trigger. She just couldn't get it to fire the first shot in DA with the exception of once or twice. I know the gun is functioning properly because it fired fine for me and the range officer. I think I may get some grip tape on put a small piece on the trigger to keep her finger from slipping. I'm just not sure.

Watch in full screen to see her shot placement. You can see her frustration after the second hammer drop and no bang.

You will have to excuse my language at the end, I was quite pleased with her shooting.
Video 1

The last video is her shooting my carry XD9sc. We were at the end of our range session and I had it laying on the table with a couple of full magazines to see if she even wanted to give it a try. She noticed the additional weight immediately and didn't have any problem shooting it as shown here in the video. I think I may have to just skip past the 22lr and buy a 9mm for her to shoot.

Head shots, watch in full screen to see her shot placement. It looks like she misses the last three shots, nope, just put them through holes already there...
Video 2

Aside from the trigger pull issue, I'm quite a proud Pop. We had a great time and I can't wait to go again [Friday].

Thanks.

Ordered some Winchester white box .45 acp ammo in 230 FMJ for an upcoming NRA class instead of wasting my hand loads and subsequent loss of brass. This stuff shot great out of my 5.25 out to 25 yards! I couldn't believe how accurate it was (~ 2.5" at 25 yards hand held). I think I could have done better but need to save the 250 rounds left for the class. Appears my XDm likes the heavier bullets.

signed - a happy camper ;-)

The XDs has been getting all the love at the range lately. I had an opportunity to pull the XDm out of the bedroom and take it to the range tonight. I had forgotten how nice the XDm 9 4.5 is to shoot. My guns are all stock standard, and wow, the trigger on the XDm is smoother than the XDs. The pull is shorter, lighter and breaks cleaner. My first couple of shots were all over the paper till I got the trigger under control.

One thing I definitely noticed, for my crappy eyes, was how much of a difference the fiber optic sight on the XDs helps me out. It was getting dark due to incoming rain clouds and the XDs sights really stood out over the standard XDm sights.

They are both amazing pistols, and in all honesty I now shoot the XDs more accurately than the XDm but I'm sure with a little practice I could get used to the XDm.

Anyway, it really re-affirmed why I chose the XDm in the first place. It feels great in the hand, shoots almost like a .22, is way more accurate than I am. And the best part, in my opinion, is they just look really frackin' cool.

Sorry to run on, but I haven't been to the range in a while, and it has been even longer since I spent time with the XDm (well, basically since I got an XDs). Any day that ends with some time at the range, is good day!

I've been a happy owner of a BI-Tone SA XD-9 and it may be my favorite firearm to use at the range. So before I stopped into the range today, I just stopped into a local gun shop and happened to find a SA XD-9 for $389.

At first, my thought was this had to be crap firearm with no box and one magazine. What I came to find out was this firearm had hardly been used and ALL the pieces with the original case, including the extra magazine!

It shot like a dream at the range and it was one of my better outings at range.

Good day today.

Due to the scarcity of ammo lately, I haven't shot anything but airsoft guns for a while. Today, a friend of mine decided he wanted to practice a bit with his carry piece, so I figured I'd join him. Brought out my SR22, and my XD, he had his SR40c.

He was shooting pretty good, about a 4" horizontal group, all like 1" under the bullseye. This was using an 8" splatter target.

Then I shoot my SR22, and my first shot goes almost perfectly dead center of the bullseye. I was just stunned, haven't fired a real gun in a couple months. Finished out the mag, and kept them all in the inner 2 rings. Handed it off to my friend, and he shot pretty good too, with just a couple in the third ring. This was on a 12" birchwood casey target.

He hands me his SR40c, and I shoot that fairly well too, just one low and left in the third ring, and a couple touching the bullseye.

Then I shoot my XD45c, and I was ON! First 2 shots go about 1/2" left of the bullseye, touching each other. Next 1 goes in the bullseye, and 2 more touching it low and right. All in the middle ring, only had 17 rounds, so I handed it off to my friend. He finished the 13 rd mag, shoots OK, had one low and left in the fourth ring.

Shot the SR22 some more, taking turns, consistently hit in the first and second rings with occasional bullseyes. Then I decide to pretty much mag dump the last 10. I hit 4 bullseyes in a row as fast as I could squeeze the trigger! We were both stood there for a minute laughing about it.

I still had 4 .45s in my pocket, and my friend wanted to see what they do to the splatter target. The top half of it was untouched, so I aim high of the bullseye, and put 2 rounds touching each other, dead center about 2" high. The next round touches the top of the bullseye, and the last touched the right side. They remove a lot more black than the .40 or .22.

The only problem was the lack of ammo!

A German Girl and Her First Shooting Experience

I had the great pleasure of introducing someone to shooting on Saturday. One of our friends has a girlfriend who just happens to be a wonderful...

I had the great pleasure of introducing someone to shooting on Saturday. One of our friends has a girlfriend who just happens to be a wonderful young lady from Germany. She had never shot a gun of any type before and was quite nervous at even discussing and planning our trip to the range. On Friday night she told us of the unbelievably strict laws in Germany that pertain to firearms, hunting and gun ranges.

We head to the local Craven County LEO range on Saturday morning and she was so nervous she could not eat breakfast. She equated our trip to planning to shoplift at the local mall. We assured her that we had legally obtained all the guns, several of us had our CCW permits and all was completely legal here in North Carolina. We had six or so handguns and my wife's Mossberg 715T with her new Mother's Day present, a 4-16 scope.

Since the truck was full the Mossberg was propped up in the passenger front area. Coming from Germany just that alone may have caused her great concern. We set up at the range and had her first try shooting with a Smith and Wesson M and P .22. Her boyfriend, who just happens to be in the Marine Corps, gave instructions as to the proper stance and techniques. It took her quite sometime to build up the courage to fire the gun. Once that obstacle was overcome she began to smile and become quite accurate. She switched over to another .22 then to an XDm 9mm, and a .327 magnum Ruger using .32 caliber ammo. She then tried the Ruger SP101 .357 with 38 Special ammo and still enjoyed the experience. After one .357 magnum attempt she decided that's not for her and it was not enjoyable with “that big of a bullet.” We rounded out the morning with the sighting in of the new scope on the Mossberg and firing quite a few .22 rounds into paper and steel. We we're finishing up around 10:30 when the NC Gun Owners Association started setting up for their outing at the range. As we all know, at that type of event, there were many guns on display and our German guest could only stare. On the drive back home she excitedly talked about her experience and how a shiny revolver would be a nice present from her boyfriend. She also was impressed with our safety procedures while handling the guns since I think she had assumed it would be a bit like a Wild West movie. Her biggest fear was of actually firing the gun. She had never thought of a gun as high end hardware for sport.

She may be moving to Arizona soon, so that revolver may be a very nice and usable present. This is just an example of how someone's opinion can be altered just by taking them shooting. I think I'll continue to contribute to the cause. :D

I finally got to the range yesterday with my new xd 9 duty. I was very impressed with the action and results of my time. I have always been a 1911 guy in the past. I was impressed in many area's. The grip angle was very comfortable, the accuracy was spot on. I have seen post's for target picture and found at 25 yrds its diffinately POA. I put 250 rounds thru with different types of ammo and didnt have a single problem. I see what others are saying about the long trigger pull and will definately address that with a prp trigger upgrade in the future. I thought I would share my 2 cents.
