I'm starting to work up data on my barreled action on the .308 700, and I've got some pretty good COAL numbers on lots of different bullets (190 SMK, 180 SMK, 168 SMK, 168 A-Max, 168 Home made, 165 SGK, 165 S-GS, etc). I'm loading so that the bullet is a few thousandths from the lands (which makes them a LOT longer than i thought they would be), and my question is about the practice.

is this a good direction to gain accuracy out of a barrel using the cartridge manufacturing process to gain tight tolerances in the chamber? does this practice generally tighten groups?

So I bought a Savage rife and decided after the fact that a DBM would be awesome. Then I found CDi Precision Gun Works website. They have bottom metals that are install-able in a wide variety of rifles, including the savage that i was holding. So I started communicating with them about it. They are super friendly and eager to help.
they said all I had to do was send them the money and a list of what I wanted to have them do and they would turn it around in 2 weeks and they would pay return shipping (less insurance).

I sent them 510 dollars and my gun. I am attaching before and after pics.
I received back my gun with the bottom metal installed and 2 AI 10 round mags.
they did a great job

it took them right at 2 weeks from when they said they received it till it was sent out it was back in my hands exactly 3 weeks from the day I shipped it out.

And determined that even though the cheap little NCStar scope I bought solely for the purpose of doing load development for my AR-15 is a horrible, horrible excuse for a piece of glass.

To save you all the agony of the details, I'll make this a short story. I really wasn't feeling line going to the range today, but went anyways. There's half the problem. Another thing to consider is that I'm not much of a rifleman. And finally, the big excuse: That wretched scope! Here's the link to it, and thankfully I only spent $25 shipped:

        Amazon.com: NcStar 3-9X40 Black Scope/Ruby Lens/Ring (SFB3940R): Sports & Outdoors

Amazon.com: NcStar 3-9X40 Black Scope/Ruby Lens/Ring (SFB3940R): Sports & Outdoors

Yes, it is a poor craftsman who blames his tools, but seriously... this thing is horribad.

So, I'll see if I can't return it. If I can't, then I'll do something creative with it. Here's a pic of my zero target, shot at 50yds:

The rifle and the ammo is capable of some good stuff. The shooter and the scope? Not so much. :D I don't have a pic of my 100yd target, because I ran out of time and the RO refused to call a ceasefire so I could retrieve it. Believe me - it was baaaad.

So, now I have to decide on a scope. I'm already pretty set on a Nikon M-223 3-14x42 with the BDC 600 reticle. Just have to save up to get it. Or maybe I'll just get one ASAP as a "congrats on surviving a year at your job" present?

Thoughts?

P.S. CarlWinslo... my running out to the range was a last second thing, and believe me - you don't want to be around me when I get into a bad mood. And yeah, at the end, I was definitely in a bad mood.

So i sent my 700sps 7mm mag back to remington because the extractor broke and the magazine lips were putting very deep scrapes into the cases.

Sent it back and 3 days later got my rifle.

Bad news: Still scraping cases

Good news: extractor fixed (for now) and I asked them to lighten up the trigger because it was breaking at 7lbs. They adjusted it some how and now its a sweet 2.5lbs.

So I got this 1937 Mosin on Wednesday of last week, in the process of removing the cosmoline I took off some of the Schyllac and decided hey I should refinish it myself. I think it came out well and am pretty proud of my work...going to shoot it on Thursday

Just by pure circumstance, Wendy and I decided to stop in at the local Academy to poke around and see what they had in stock, not expecting to see this beauty sitting in the rack:

I've been on the hunt for a Mossberg MVP Varmint, chambered in 5.56mm, for a while now. The Varmint model has a 24" medium profile, fluted and free-floated barrel as well as a fantastic laminate target-style stock. The interesting bit about the MVP is that it accepts standard AR-15 magazines. The magazine catch sits forward of the magazine on the bottom of the stock, and the latch releases when pushed back towards the magazine. Since the catch is on the left side of the magazine, the latch pivots a bit to move the catch clear of the magazine which allows the magazine to be removed from the rifle to be replaced or reloaded. The MVP comes with a 5rd GI-style aluminum magazine, and has the Mossberg name on the floorplate. I can't tell if it's painted on, or laser-engraved. Feels engraved, in my estimation.

It is also equipped with a user-adjustable trigger that Mossberg calls the "Lightning Bolt Action" or LBA trigger. My MVP's trigger was pre-set from the factory at just shy of 3.5lb, averaged over 10 pulls with my Lyman digital trigger gauge. After a few dry fires, I can say that it's every bit as good a trigger as the Savage Accu-Trigger.

Looping back around to my favorite feature so far: the laminate stock. Starting from the rear, there is a soft rubber pad on the butt of the stock. There's a nice rise on the comb of the stock which will help align your eye to the rifle's scope and assist in giving a consistent cheek weld at the same time. This is something some rifle makers have forgotten about, and I'm glad I don't have to add anything to this stock to make it work with a scope. Your mileage may vary, however.

The nearly vertical grip is comfortable, with noticeable palm swells that have stippling to help improve your grip on the rifle. The forend of the stock is wide and flat, which is great for shooting off a bench or sandbags. If you ever did take it out to the field and couldn't (or don't want to) use a bipod, the forend sits quite stably in the palm of your support hand from a sitting position. I noticed that the rifle is very well balanced, even with the long 24" barrel. I suppose the fluting helped a small amount here, as well as the added weight of the stock, especially at the butt.

I did notice that there are only two sling studs on the stock, which means that you're going to have to either pick between a sling or bipod, or add another stud if you just have to have both. Seeing as how this rifle would probably be more at home at the range's bench, I don't think most folks will have to choose between the two. Finally, at the front of the stock we have some more of the same stipling on both sides of the forend of the stock that we found on the grip.

So that's it for my little open-box review of this rifle. Next up is taking it out to the range for a little informal testing. Can't say my cheap $25 NCStar scope is going to let this rifle shine, but it's all I've got for the time being until I figure out what I want for a permanent scope.

I've got to say, I'm really lucky to have a wife like Wendy. She knew I'd been looking for this rifle for a while. Even on Mother's Day she puts up with crap like this. It was kinda funny, because while we were walking into the Academy, I told her that between an MVP and a Stevens 200, I would go with whichever I found first. Oh, speaking of that... I bought this rifle for $542. ;) MUCH cheaper than a project gun! Can't wait to go shooting. Best Mother's Day EVER!

Ive been really racist in the past towards the HMR but I'm opening my mind.

How are they in the wind? A normal wind here is 15 mph or more.

How far out can a 17 grain bullet kill a priare dog? 100?

What's a good rifle for the money? I seen Savage has a heavy barreled synthetic for $250. I'd like a Henry to match the wife's 22 but that's a lot of money for a plikinker.

What kind of optics? The BSA sweet 17?

What about going the other route and buying a Taurus in 17?

What kind of accuracy are you getting with yours?

I would like to shoot out that far when I get the rifle and would like to keep track of my shooting and maybe even make myself a dope chart. Do you have a favorite log book to use? I'm sure I could make a basic one in Excel but I'm sure I would forget a few things. Any thoughts are welcome.

They had tons of Ariska's(I had to snicker when i looked at caliber and it said 7mm ***...couldn't keep a straight face asking for that) and I noticed a 1938 Mosin Nagant for $199 did a quick lookover, seemed alright but the best part was the 7.62X54R ammo...which I thought was only used in the SVD and PKM...which is wonderful because this place always has boxes of this ammo and no restrictions on how many boxes I can buy in a day.

So obviously I want to go back and look at the rifling in the barrel to see if its in good shape

I have just read people who rave about this weapon and others who call it a POS...

what are everyones thoughts?

Got this a few months ago. It was plain old light brown, with a cheap scope, but in fantastic condition. Zero rust, no cracks in the wood and a very nice bore.

Since then I have stripped it and have a couple more things to do to get it ready for stain. I still want to detail the grip and add the nice Remington grip cap I got.

I have added a Timney trigger, shortened the LOP, enhanced the comb, installed a recoil reducing pad, lapped the bolt lugs and installed a new Bushnell Elite Limited Edition scope.

Sure, the shipping was a bit steep, but it's the perfect Mosin Nagant for me since I enjoy refinishing firearms and tinkering with them. Now I just need to get a few spam cans of 7.62x54R. :)

Now I'm off to learn more about the Mosin Nagant.
