"'Starting Strong' gives civilians interested in becoming a soldier a chance to live and breathe a military occupational specialty for a week with an Army mentor and actual soldiers to determine if Army life is for them. At the end of each reality-TV inspired episode, the prospect is asked if he or she wants to join the Army."

There will be 10 episodes.

Looks like it's going to be more like 10 recruitment commercials instead of an actual reality series.

On my way home going through Kandahar I decided to send one of my fixed blade knives to another soldier at FOB Salerno. I know it had to be sent by registered mail because I already tried to send it while I was at my smaller base the month before. At the post office there were no issues sending it out and it was properly packaged. I know the address was correct. This package was sent on March 26th and still has not arrived. At this point I'm pretty sure one of the postal workers simply stole it. The return address on it was my main base in Afghanistan. I'm hoping theres a chance that maybe it was sent back there and they would forward it to me in the states, but this late in the game I doubt that's happening either. This was a $325 knife but nothing from the outside of the package would have indicated so. This was a gift to the soldier so there's no chance of deception on his part. I've emailed the post office requesting info on it but haven't heard anything back yet. I did not insure the package as I was thinking the value probably wouldn't have been worth the hassle of going through a process that had a very small if not impossible chance of getting the money back in the first place. Plus it was going to a place 50 miles away.

So I guess I'm wondering if any of you guys have dealt with this. Mail being forwarded to your HOR after you leave country, lost packages in country, etc.

So I'm working on starting school this summer as I'm now eligible for the 100% coverage after completing 3 years of active duty. I found The New GI Bill is under attack. and this is an immensely helpful site. Been messing around with the benefits calculator a bit and have some questions. The bill requires full time student status (12 cr hours where I want to go) to get 100% of the BAH. I am attempting to do this while still working full time so would be attending all 3 semesters every year. Does the benefit care how you split up the credit hours through out the year and just simply get 24 every 12 month period, or could I do 8 credit hours for each semester and get full time benefits for that? I'm also assuming that for a traditional student who does fall and spring semester and takes the summer semester off you wouldn't get BAH for that summer semester even if you've completed 24 credit hours throughout that year.

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I was not selected for a direct commission into the JAG Corps. This was my 6th time trying for the AF, fourth for Army, and third for Navy. I am now considering my options about going in as a non-JAG officer. I am currently a practicing attorney but I know I will regret not having served in some capacity for the rest of my life. I will be 32 in July so I know my time to do something is running short. I have spoken to my wife about it and she supports my decision as she knows my desire to serve and the fact the serving will help take care of my ridiculous amount of student loan debt from college/law school. I'm not sure what MOS I would qualify for as I have a B.S., J.D., and I am finishing up my LL.M. (Masters of law). I would love to hear some opinions about my chances of getting an age waiver, if I am making a wise choice, and what MOS should I look into. I appreciate any advice!

FOB Gardez, Paktia Province, Afghanistan - Two years ago today at 0610, one of my NCOs pounded on my b-hut door screaming "Sir, we got Bin Laden! We got Bin Laden! We gotta go smoke!". Now, we smoked a LOT of cigars in Afghanistan (as I imagine a lot of you did)...but never this early. But nevertheless, I grabbed a Nub Habano out of my humidor and headed out the door...

15 minutes later, six of my NCOs and I gathered down by our RG-31s and smoked victory cigars to celebrate the end of a 10 year man hunt. It was a HELL OF A DAY to be an American Soldier in Afghanistan (220 miles from where it happened) and I couldn't be more proud of being a war zone, surrounded by some of the best Soldiers and NCOs I've ever had the privilege of working with:

So, there was an envelope waiting for me yesterday from AFPC. I've been separated for well over a year now, and every time I get something from a USAF organization, I kind of have to resist the urge to chuck it in the trash. A lot of surveys lately...

Anyhoo, I open it up, and it's a commendation for being a participant in Unified Protector. That was apparently the sustained mission, AFTER Op. Odyssey Dawn, that I literally was a part of for about 2 weeks. I guess I got a medal.

I guess I'll add that to my National Defense/GWOT/BMT/Good Conduct rack.

Actually, just looked at my old uniform which I will likely never wear again, and my ribbon rack is too small. Oh well, guess who's not updating?

P.S. Would have posted the medal cert, but it's got personal info on it. Also, it's in French. I hate the French.
