So I'm new to shooting (started in November of last year) but have a decent grasp on the subject. I can shoot "ok groups" with my ruger sr1911 using the POA sight picture. I moved my target back to 45' today, and shot low the whole time. Do I have to just aim above my target? Or is there a trick/technique for shooting at further distances?
Here is at 5yds-8 shots (8"x11" target)

Ok, so this question might be odd. I have a new Sig 1911 Ultra Compact. It takes a good bit of effort to pull the slide back. Also, when the slide is back and locked with an empty Mag just pressing on the mag release with your thumb wont release the slide. You need to pull back slightly on the slide shile pressing the release to get it to go forward. Is this because the gun is new and the Sig is just a tight gun? Or am I getting old?

So the last 1911 review I wrote about a year and a half ago received 12,000 views here on XDtalk, so that became the motivation to write this review. Here I go again...

Preface

I will start by saying that I’m no Larry Vickers. I would consider myself a moderately knowledgeable 1911 authority. I know the basics and can identify quality when I see it. I’ll try to identify all the positive and negative aspects of this 1911 and hopefully give you a quality review from the perspective of your average 1911 buyer. One last thing before I get to the review, I’m going to talk from my experience with this 1911, so if what I’m saying is different from your experience, please share. I’m not a terminology guru either so if I get a term wrong don’t bash me for it, just let me know what the proper term is. Last, I’m not a english major. I’ll do my best to proof read my work and make for a good read, but I can only do my best. Thanks for reading.

Mr YACYAS

Backstory

About 6 months ago I sold my Springfield TRP Operator to a friend with the intention of buying it back from him. Unfortunately, the TRP bug got him good and when I finally had money again he decided to keep it. Well my loss, I ended up ordering a NIGHTHAWK Custom Enforcer in 9mm. Considering the fact that I won’t see that pistol till sometime in 2015 I decided to get a 1911 to fill the void in the mean time. Ergo this review.

Review of the Sig Sauer 1911 TACPAC

After searching around, the Sig 1911's just seems to have the best value in their price range. I paid $919.00 (w/o taxes and background) for the this 1911. Couple of the reasons I went with this one. At the price I couldn't find a 1911 with all the features that I wanted except for this Sig.

For one I wanted front and rear checkering on the grip. I as actually surprised how few 1911 makers actually do that at this price range. The Sig checkering is not nearly as aggressive as the TRP checkering. Which is a good thing for most of you as I hear constant complaining how the TRP is too aggressive. The Sig checkering does however gets the job done and is advertised as 25 LPI on the front of the grip. The Main Spring Housing maintains a 20 LPI.

Sacrilegious as it may be I also wanted a rail for a weapon mounted light. Not a rare feature but one that makes finding the right 1911 harder. I plan on using this as my primary pistol for carry, home defense, and duty so it has lots of roles to fill. Being so I needed as much versatility as I can get. If this was solely a carry model I probably would have ditched the rail.

I also wanted a rear sight with a Novak cut, I definitely didn’t want a 1911 that has some mystery cut like the Remington R1 Enhanced. This Sig 1911 comes with a 3-dot standard Heine non-tritium sight set.

The Sig has the Nitron finish which is a finish I’m not to familiar with. I have used this 1911 in some holster carry but not enough to really gauge how tough the Nitron finish is. I will try to update this review as I can really get a true grasp of its longevity.

The Sig's slide to frame and barrel to bushing fit are adequate. You definitely won’t be blow away by how tight it is but good enough to get the job done.

The Sig had some initial trouble with fully chambering during the first fifty or so shots. After that though she started running pretty flawlessly. I’ve put about 400 rounds through her and the last 300 have been 100%. I’m guessing this particular gun needed a little break in. Regardless, this gun is going to be fed a lot and I will have a really good idea how reliable she is in the next month or so. I’ll update accordingly.

So accuracy, I have pictures of some groups I made standing at 7 yards. I wish I had remembered to take pictures, but I did shoot this on a ransom rest at 25 yards and it average about 2 1/2 inches with non-dialed in reloads.

Here are the 7 yard standing target pics.

The TACPAC in my opinion is somewhat of a joke. The holster is a copy of a SERPA holster which is not my favorite holster design already, additionally its a poor copy at that. The railed version of the TACPAC comes with one less magazine but includes a rail mounted laser. I'm not a fan of lasers so for me its pointless for you maybe its a feature you'd like.

One thing I'd like to touch on because I kind of grilled them in my last review is the Sig magazines. In my previous review I basically said that the only thing you should do with sig magazines is throw them in the trash. This time though they worked great, I still prefer Wilson 8rd 47d magazines but there is nothing wrong with the Sig magazines as far as I can tell. So props to Sig. I did test the Chip McCormick 10rd power magazines with the Sig 1911 and it did not like them at all. Non-stop feeding issues with the Chip 10 rounders, don't know if its just this gun or the Sig line in general.

Couple modifications I made to this gun. The grip that came with the Sig was adequate but I liked the wood Colo Bolo grips I had lying around better. I also added the ED Brown drop in magazine well mainspring housing for easier and quicker reloading. Last I added the black serrated 10-8 rear sight.

Thanks for reading. Hope you enjoyed.

I have a "FrAnkEn gUN" 1911 that is a mishmash of parts. I built it on a 80's Norinco frame and used secondhand parts. It's nothing fancy but it's a shooter and eats everything I've ever fed it!

Anyhow, I'm wondering how difficult it would be to do a mild "melt" on the slide and frame. Also are there any videos that show the process? Thanks in advance!

here's a pic...

And this is kind of what I want to do. Just not as extreme...

Well last night i was able to find some time to shoot my newly purchased Kimber TLE II.
If some of you may recall i made a post when i got title "hope the rumors aren't true". Well in my case they turned out not to be.
I fired 225 rounds through the pistol (and 100 through my 2 Glocks also) and had ZERO failures or issues of any kind.
I used the factory mag which i heard is very problematic, a Wilson 47D, and a Chip McCormick 8 rounder.
Kimber also stated not to lube with grease which i did anyway using hoppes gun grease.
I was easily tearing ragged holes at 7 yards however at 15 yards i could barely put 2 out of 8 rounds on to a paper plate. I attribute this to fatigue from shooting after a 9 hour work day of sanding and painting cars.
I used WWB and Remington UMC, both 230 gr.
So there you guys have it, a Kimber that worked every time i pulled the trigger and was also a dream to shoot.
The only thing i regret was not buying this gun 2 years ago when i started looking at the TLE II.

Mods done to gun are Kimber warrior grips, Ed Brown mainspring housing, and an Ed Brown Maxi magwell.
the gun is a series 80 and it has never been modified in any way shape or form.
is this normal or do i have a disconnect problem? the gun has been flawless so far if that helps. thanks for the help everyone

No pics because I don't have a camera for the next couple weeks, plus it's stock, so you can look it up.

BUT...

Got the gun Friday and out to the range today. Great shooter. Recoil is as well-behaved as my full Remington 1911. 100 rounds shot flawlessly. My highly-experienced friend was impressed as well.

But Sig gets dinged on the QC for this weapon, though. When I got it home from the FFL, I field stripped it to become familiar with the gun, wipe it down, and oil it the way I want it. I followed the manual as I do with all of my new guns. However, the manual Sig packed with this gun was for Sig’s full-size 1911. The Ultra Compact 1911 differs in the barrel bushing and recoil spring plug, and thus differs significantly in the removal of the slide, main spring, and barrel. Sig packed a one-page Ultra Compact manual addendum in the manual that looked like it had been ripped out of another manual. It was lacking in details and had no schematic.

Putting the gun back together the first time was a real trick. I had to manually depress the plunger level to get the slide to move back into position. Once I had the hurdle cleared, it wouldn’t move back to position so that could get the slide stop back into place. The issue turned out to be a wrist pin that spanned from side to side on the rails on the frame. I don’t think the pin was properly seated, and it stood proud on the left side of the gun, preventing the slide from moving back. After several tries, the slide finally moved back into position. It was apparent on closer inspection that the pin was the culprit since the pin’s surface on the left side has been shaved away.

I like the way this gun shoots and I’m going to keep it. But I expected the details to be tight on a Sig that cost nearly $1000. I will be contacting Sig to tell them about my concerns.

I have always wanted to get a 1911. I dont bother with safe queens or night stand dust collectors. All my firearms are purchased to be carried and used.

Having said that, is a 3 or 3.5 inch officers model a good ccw? I have seen mixed reviews in terms of reliability.
I am able to conceal (with a little work) a xd 40 service model. The weight doesnt bother me, but the grip is a bit long for my taste.

Anyways thanks in advance for any help.

I bought a Remington 1911 R1 Enhanced in late February. What a great shooter. I have become very partial to the 1911.

So...needing/wanting a carrygun...I have been looking for a Kimber Ultra Carry II or a Sig 1911 Ultra Compact. Found the Sig today at my preferred online retailer. It's on the UPS truck now.

I have a feeling that things are going to get a bit noisy on the range early Sunday morning...

I finally managed to pick up a new Ruger SR-1911 this past week. Here in the Phoenix area, just like most everywhere else, they've been very hard to come by. My overall impression of the gun is very favorable. Beautiful fit and finish, nice grips, and contrasting black oxide small parts really set the gun off appearance wise. I won't get a chance to fire it up for a few weeks, but that's OK. At least I now have one in the safe.

I was a bit surprised to see Ruger got away from the nice plastic carrying cases they usually provide with all of their pistols. This one came in a cardboard box. They did include a small zippered "rug" style case along with it that it comes packed in.

I'm not sure if there is any advantage to having the barrel and bushing machined from the same bar. It's mostly advertising fluff. What makes these parts is the tolerances they are machined to, along with the material. The fact it came off the same bar is relatively unimportant. I guess it can't hurt anything, I just don't see it being any great advantage.

Overall it looks as if Ruger has another hit on their hands. They have come out once again with a beautiful, well made weapon at an affordable price point. This is what makes, and keeps them one of the most profitable firearms companies in the world.
I went to my LGS and saw two used 1911 i liked. springfield a1 for $600. and a kimber custom with trijicon night sights for $750. i loved the trigger feel to the kimber and the action sounded like a poodles chew toy. tight tolerances i suspect. the springfield a1 looked original but still felt great great trigger and action. mostly will be a range gun less that 1000 rnds per year. which one is easier to customize and availability in parts and fit. as well as reliability. i just need help in a deciding factor from you expeirience 1911 fanboys. thanks

Yesterday, I took my colt defender out to the range and put a few rounds through it, same ammunition as last time, same mags, same new springs. Had a few ftf. Got home and field stripped to clean it, noticed 3 things. 1. There is brass everywhere in the chamber and the cases were chewed apart 2. The barrel rides much looser and 3. The barrel link is very very loose, the pin does not slide out but the link basically moves freely (guessing that explains the barrel gap) is this a pretty common problem? I have recently been informed the old owner shot alot of +p *face palm* so I'm guessing it has been beat to **** anyways. Should I drop it off at a gunsmith and get the link replaced?

Found a guy with one locally for $775, and was wondering what everyone thought of the price. Love the thought of a 4" barrel on an allow officer's sized frame, and in stainless, no less. Even love that it's got a single-sided safety on it.

hey everyone its been awhile since ive been on here since i sold my xdm 45, but anywho, just picked up a brand new para g.i. expert finished in black...

hey everyone its been awhile since ive been on here since i sold my xdm 45, but anywho, just picked up a brand new para g.i. expert finished in black nitride and went out on a rainy day and put 54 flawless rounds thru it including 3 of my dads hot [950-960 fps] hornady hollow point reloads, everything fed beautifully.
i do have some questions for you guys however, so ill dive right in.
1. i dont know if all 1911 mags are excruciatingly tight when there brand new,but my 2 checkmate 8 rounders that came with the gun were impossible to get all 8 rounds in, so i loaded up 6 and let them sit for a day and then emptied them and soaked em in silicone spray and worked the follower and there better now and i can get all 8 in if i ask nicely:p [an uplula is definitely in the near future]

2. i field stripped the gun and cleaned it this morning and noticed the barrel bushing was pretty loose and could easily be moved with just one finger, i was already planning on having a custom fitted bushing put on later on after i get the gun broke in,just wondering how tight should i get the bushing?

3. the trigger wasnt as bad as i thought it was gonna be but it still sucked in my opinion, so, im gonna have a trigger job done and the trigger replaced with a short sti polymer trigger set at 3.5 lbs or so, which brings me to my question, the stock trigger has a lot of vertical and lateral movement,do short triggers have the least amount of lateral and vertical movement? or is there any difference between any length trigger when a trigger job is done?

4. as i said before the gun has flawless so far but it has a ways to go before its broken in, and depending on reliability during the break in process i may or may not have a total reliability job done. im also wanting to have the internals smoothed out regardless if i get the reliability job done to it or not. what are your thoughts on smoothing and deburring all of the internals?

5.this is going to be a ccw when i know this gun will be 100% reliable and im contemplating putting on trijicon night sights, but, what i would really like to do is find a reputable gunsmith that is looking for a challenge and see if there is away the slide can be milled for the kimber truglo tfo sights. at this point ive given up wondering why truglo hasnt made tfos for all colt 1911 clones. does anyone know if this is even doable?

6.im a little confused if the barrel should be ramped or not, what are the pros and cons of ramped barrels?

7. ctc laserguards grips on a ccw? how many of you have em,and do you prefer the red or green laser? front or side activation? for the small fortune they cost i only wanna buy once and cry once

8. the muzzle crown looks good [no visible burrs] just curious if its money well spent or wasted if i had it recrowned with a 11 degree crown?

9. during breakin am i limited strictly to fmj's or can i toss in jhp's also?

after i go thru all that it will be finished in satin black ionbond front to back, top to bottom [i.e. murdered out]

I'm somewhat disappointed in my SA 1911 A1 Loaded. It's accuracy is not what I expected. SA says that it should shoot 3.5" or better at 25 yards, and it does not. I'm well aware it could be me. Anyway,

I'm now thinking about a 4"1911 from Kimber, and I would like to get one that is noted for it's accuracy straight from Kimber. But they have soooo many models.
So the question is, for those of you that have 4" 45 Kimbers, what do you reccomend, I look at? And why?
ALL information, especially from Kimber owners will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I have to say, though...damn this has a HEAVY trigger! I think I've gotten spoiled by all of my customs...which means, this one's taking a trip to a custom shop I think...gonna be a while until I have the scratch to pay for it, as this has been a veritable buying spree as of late.
