A few weeks back I bought a Remington 9mm UMC 250 round Mega Pack and inside the package I found an improperly produced cartridge. Basically the bullet itself was packed down to far causing the casing to expand. So I sent Remington's customer service an email and then they put in my touch with the ammo production plant in the US. After a couple emails they wanted to see the bullet to run analysis on it and see how it could of happened. So I sent in the bullet and then today I received a signed letter back from a gentleman named Bill Conrad and a 50 round box of 9mm. Overall awesome customer service and hell I would of been happy with a free Remington hat or sticker. Just thought I would share it with the rest of you incase you run in to a problem with any of their ammo. Remington came across as very enthusiastic in figuring out ammo manufacturing problems and overall customer satisfaction.

I have had some feed issues with reloading 165gr 40 SW in another thread. From that discussion one of the things talked about was powder charge. I have 2 manuals a Speer and Lyman. I have pretty much used the Lyman. However while trying to figure out the feed issue I looked at the Speer book and notice something very different about the powder charges between the two. The Lyman says for Unique powder range is 5.4 to 6.0 gr. However my Speer book states 7.2 to 8.0 gr of Unique. How could there be such a huge difference between the two?

I was loading 40cal. I noticed a change in the pressure it took to pull the handle down. I was watching everything as I made a few more. I found that the primer removal pin had somehow worked down and was hitting the shell plate not allowing the full function of the press. I had made 4 to 5 bullets. They bulge slightly at the case head and will not go into the case gauge. I plan on pulling them and have not pulled a complete bullet with powder and primer. For one, how dangerous is this? Is there anything I can do to make it a safer process.

Just picked 250 rounds up from SportsmansGuide at $0.40/rnd after shipping and taxes and whatnot. Not a bad grab, especially given the way ammo's been this month... but I'm curious to hear if other folks have used this round, and how they'd compare it to Winchester Ranger-T's or Federal Hydra-Shok's performance.

If it's any good for defensive carry, I'll probably load up my defensive mags with the stuff and shoot what I've already got for competitions and general practice...

What is your favorite reload for practice shooting your XDs.
I went to the range today for the first time and the pistol sht better with a stouter load. I had three loads. A Berry HBRN with 4.2 grains of Bullseye powder, Then I went to a Montana Gold FMJ with 4.5 grains and lastly I shot the Montana gold 230 grain with 4.9 grains of Bullseye and they shot the most accurate. I would post targets but I need to have 10 post before I am aloud to play. I was able to easily keep all of the 17 shots in a 3 inch group
Two 5 round magazines and one 7 round.

Went by one of the two walmarts around here and took the obligatory stroll through the sporting goods department to laugh at their crummy ammo...

Went by one of the two walmarts around here and took the obligatory stroll through the sporting goods department to laugh at their crummy ammo choice.
For the first time in six months they actually had more than hunting rounds and shotgun shells, had a few boxes of Tula 223 for $5.47 each and 10+ boxes of Tula 7.62x39 for $5.17.
Well obviously I had to grab a few for the AK so I asked the lady to grab the max limit out but she said she had some under the counter and that she would grab those for me.

I walk over to the counter with her and asked "so do you always have ammo 'under the counter'?" and she said "only when we have overstock."
I told her it was the first time in months that I've seen this ammo in stock at that location.
So she rings up my purchase and tells me the total is $5.64. I pause for a second but see that all 3 boxes are in the bag. So I swipe my card and pay the $5.64.
The receipt prints out and she looks at it as it's printing out then she handed it to me and all 3 boxes of ammo in a bag and tells me to have a nice day.

I don't feel bad for not speaking up, I gave her every opportunity to notice it herself but she never did.

Would you have said something?

I have a XD 40 4" and I normally reload 165gr FMJ Montana Gold bullets (more round shape) and have no issue. I recently switched and got some 165gr plated Berrys bullets (more sloped shape). Every since I switched I have had feed issues with the Berrys. Not every time but on a random basis. I checked the cartridge length and mouth width and they the same the montana golds. I am using the same powder charge in the berrys cartridge as I was in the montana golds. I am also using the same mags with both types of bullets. Any idea of what could be the cause? I have shot thousands and thousands of rounds with no issue until now. This is including Winchester, Remington, blazer, gold dot, federal, montana gold, etc in rounded, rounded flat nose, and sloped flat nose bullet shapes. The only thing that I seen different was when the berry reloads where chambered there was a noticeable bullet set back occurring . If I chambered it there would be more, I don't seem to notice this on the Montana gold reloads. Could the bullet setback during chambering be causing the feed issue? I took some of the berry cartridges and increased the crimp on them until when chambered there was significant bullet setback.

Hey everybody,

I'm just getting into reloading, and I am trying to find the best bang for the buck, and I want to focus on something that fredj advised me against, but I went for it anyways.

I bought a used "vintage" Ohaus 5-0-5 beam scale and a new Horizon PRO-50A digital scale. I bought both off eBay for around $40. Unboxing the Ohaus, I noticed it had been used by a serious reloader, but not abused. I cleaned it and used some all-purpose polish to shine it up.

Unboxing the Horizon scale, I was disappointed in my initial impressions. The foam was yellowed, and the included 50g "calibration weight" had come apart (not pictured, but I assume the metal plug was to get it to 50 grams exactly). Anyways, it came with 20 and 50 gram weights, tweezers, batteries, and an AC adapter. The measuring portion of the scale is no bigger than a silver dollar, and you'll see the iconic powder pan of the Ohaus on the scale later for reference.

And so begins my tests.

1. I leveled and zeroed the Ohaus scale.
2. I calibrated the Horizon scale according to manufacturer's instructions.
3. TEST 1: I weighed the 20 gram weight in grains on both scales. Results: BOTH PASS

Digital: 308.64 gr
Beam: 308.6 gr
Theoretical Value: 308.65 gr

4. I then used the powder pan from the Ohaus scale, and zeroed the digital scale for ease of measurement.

IMPORTANT: the digital scale read the powder pan as 146.08 gr prior to any measurement other than the 20 gram control. This means that when the pan was removed, the scale would read negative 146.08 gr.

5. TEST 2: I weighed powder into the powder pan, and measured it on the digital, then tested the beam scale to check the reading. Results:

Test 2a: Digital Reading: 6.12 gr Beam Reading: 6.10 gr PASS
Test 2b: Digital Reading: 20.42 gr Beam Reading: 20.40 gr PASS
Test 2c: Digital Reading: 69.80 gr Beam Reading: 69.80 gr PASS

Check Zero: Digital - PASS Beam - PASS (at this time I noted that the negative 146.08 gr had changed to negative 146.04 gr, I didn't think too much of it)

Test 2d: Digital Reading: 2.52 gr Beam Reading: 2.50 gr PASS
Test 2e: Digital Reading: 1.10 gr Beam Reading: 1.10 gr PASS

Check Zero:
Digital - PASS
Beam - PASS

(at this time, the negative 146.04 gr had changed to negative 145.98 gr, I knew I had a problem, but I had 2 more tests to confirm my suspicisions)

6. TEST 3: I weighed powder into the powder pan, and measured it on the beam scale, then tested the digital scale to check the reading. Results:

Test 3a: Beam Reading: 10.00 gr Digital Reading: 10.16 gr FAIL

At this point, further measuring tests were discontinued, and the final test remained.

7. TEST 4: I checked zero on both scales one final time. Results:

Beam Scale: PASS, no deviation
Digital Scale: FAIL, 0.10 gr deviation

Neither scale had been significantly moved or disturbed - there was no moving air (i.e. fans that could affect readings), the table was checked for level N-S, E-W, and NW-SE and passed all three times, and the powder pan had been cleaned completely of any remaining powder.

Im thinking of using W-231 with 180gr fmj fn, oal at 1.130 with a start load of 4.5. This has a book of 872fps with psi listed at 26,400. I will be shooting these out of a 5.25 XDm. I know this will increase the fps. Will this also increase the psi. I may try and load the oal out to 1.135. I also have some 200gr fmj fn I would also like to use for 40sw. Any success with the powders listed above?

Just wondering what kind of deals/experiences you guys have found at gun shows?

I hit one up a few months ago in Columbia, SC. Plentiful handgun ammo, .22lr was still outrageous ($60-80 per brick), but I did come away with a Georgia Arms can of 500 .223 rounds for $255 dollars. Still pretty high, but cheap compared to other scalpers, and it was the very first .223 I had found anywhere post-Newtown.

Columbia is having another gun show June 8th and now I'm in the mood for some bulk 9mm so I can buy another handgun. Here's to hoping for some good deals (and hopefully no buying limits).

I wish there was a way to check specific gun show inventories ahead of time instead of just showing up and hunting. The last show was survival of the fittest.

Shooting from a XDs

I am new to reloading and I'm a little baffled by the 10 rounds I made and just shot.
230grn XTP, 5.5 grains unique. I had to put the OAL to 1.215 so that it would cycle properly in my XDs. Hornandy lists a minimum of 1.210. My question is I would of expected to see around 700fps coming from the xds and I was banking on going up to 6-6.5 grains with the xtp to reach the velocity I'm aiming for around 800-850fps but I just shot with the chrono and I averaged 1050fps. That not what I expected . Under 5.5 grains unique hornady lists it somewhere around 725-750fps in a 4" or so barrel. Im away from my book at the moment. What gives ? Brass looks good and primer after shooting 10 rounds. Is it the OAL causing the increased velocity? My chrono I just bought today.

Interesting story covering the current ammo shortage.

Demand For Ammunition Is Up. Why Aren't Prices? : Planet Money : NPR

An excerpt:

Quote:

In a famous study, the Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman and two colleagues found that people's ideas of fairness are so strong that, even if it makes short-term sense to raise prices during a shortage, many retailers don't. Campbell says that's because when prices go up, consumers actually care about the reason behind the increase — the retailer's motive.
"If a consumer sees a price go up in an unexpected fashion, they want to know, 'Why? Why has it gone up?' " she says.
There are lots of reasons consumers approve of (if the price the store is paying for the goods has increased, for example). But research has consistently shown that a sudden increase in demand is not one of them. So rather than raise prices, Bob's Little Sport Shop and other stores are rationing ammo in order to keep their customers' loyalty.

This explains why many people are upset when people buy up the ammo and resell it at sharply higher prices. The laws of economics show that increased pricing is a perfectly rational way to maximize profits during high demand. If shelves are empty that's a sign that the prices are too low. Yet many people don't see high demand as a fair reason to increase prices.

Although it won't help any of us find more ammo I do find it fascinating to hear about the root causes of the behaviors we're seeing.

A 525 box of Federal 22LR was $45
A 50 count of Blazer aluminum .38 spcl $28
No name .45 was $45.
And if IRC, 100 bulk box of .223 was $69-70

I walked out empty handed as this is just ridiculous. A few months ago, they were selling new pmags for $25 each.

Needless to say, not shopping there ever again, or supporting them.

So I ha a Lee challenger press. Dies primers powder brass the quick releases to put the dies in for 9mm 45 and 223 6.5 grendel

The Lee press is missing the parts between the handle and the press. Calling Lee tomorrow but betting $65 to get it up and running that would end up with the advanced foam roller handle

I'm teaching enough I'll go through 5k 9mm 5k 223 1k 45 acp within 4 months.

So I have everything except I need some more small pistol primers but know were to get em hell only sell me 1k a week.

Running lead for the pistols a hodgepodge for the 223 (know were to pick up 3k+ of 55 or heavier bullets pm me)

Anyways if I aim to reload 2k a month for the foreseeable future what's my best option. Do I buy a progressive press if so cost vs time what's what.

Next for the 223 do I need a case trimmer? I'm already got to buy a primer pocket cleaner. Is it worth it getting a decrimping tool for 566 brass I have a good bit.

I can't just keep shooting 2500 rounds a month of factory ammo its killing me.

Well got so excited to find dies finally, I found the only place that had less than a 6-12 week process time and ordered some lead. I have 1000 lead Round Nose Semi Wadcutters in route to me. 155 gr with a brinell of 18. They had 500/$35 decided I'd stock up while I could find them. Now I have brass cleaned and primed, ready to go just waiting for them to show up. Going powder hunting again but I got a pretty good start with AA#2 Anyone that has a magic load for this setup that'd be awesome. Hoping to find power pistol or maybe find the new BE-86 that's coming out. 3 weeks out so I got time to find powder.

Oh also they are from Friendswood Bullet Co.
friendswoodbullet.com

Will Moly coating help cut down on barrel leading? Or am I correct in thinking that velocity and pressure affect it most?

So I was going through my process of loading a batch of 40S&W and when doing my final inspections I noticed one case was abnormally short.

The OAL length of the loaded round came out to 1.1240" but the case itself is only .8120"

Lyman says it should measure at about .850"

The round chambered just fine but I was just curious, and cautious, as to whether or not the short case length would cause a problem as I'm firing or about to fire.

I took a side-by-side shot for a visual.

Late yesterday evening I went into my local Sportsman's Warehouse (Southaven, MS) and was pleasently surprised that the ammo shelves were somewhat full (popular calibers like .223 & .308 were still lacking though, didn't look at the pistol ammo). I was able to pick up 2K CCI #250 Large Rifle Magnum primers, 2K Remington 6 1/2 Small Rifle primers, two 100 count boxes of Sierra 175 gr .308 SMK's And 2 lbs of H380 powder. They limit you to one SKU purchase per day and I had to take the wife with me and she bought the additional SKU's for me. Bad thing is she found out how much I paid for the stuff, might shouldn't do that again. ;)

Hey all,

Hey all,

Getting into reloading - ordered a Lee Breech Lock Challenger Anniversary kit, 9mm dies (what I will begin with, probably begin loading 30-30 sometime as well), and a case length guage.

I think I have everything I need except a way to clean the brass and a proper powder measure, so those are my two questions.

1. Would you go ultrasonic ($29.99 at Harbor Freight) or would you go vibratory with walnut media (upwards of $75)? I don't need the cases to be the shiniest on the range, but they need to be clean.

2. What's the best manual powder measure? The Lee kit I bought is a single stage, and it comes with the "Perfect Powder Measure" but I have seen mixed reviews. Are there any good alternatives that doesn't include me weighing each charge on the scale they include?

Thanks for the help. I also scored some WSP primers, Berry's 115gr 9mm LRN, and some Titegroup powder - I'll likely begin at 3.9gr and work up to the max charge of 4.3gr (OAL = 1.100)

So,
My local indoor range requires that you buy ammo from them, generally they only have reloads.

Anyway, we were shooting my wife's SP101 Friday using 38spl reloads.
So, I shot 5 rounds, but could not eject the casings, no matter how hard I tried to force the ejector rod.

Finally found the offending case, and had to pound it out using a long key, it was stuck bad.

Case was split alomost the entire length. Given that they use the spent casings from the range, I imagine they have no clue how many times a case has been fired.

Is there any danger of reloads that I should be aware of? A stuck case is probably no big deal, but I want to know if it can result in a dangerous kaboom or not.

Thanks

I've finally got the last of my reloading stuff from Dillon and MidwayUSA and I'm looking for a formula for .300BLK Supersonic rounds. I figure I'll use either 220gr or 240gr SMKs for subsonic, just wondering what bullets to use for supersonic. Someone recommended the Barnes TSX 110gr, but those are hard to find and very expensive as they're solid copper.

I'm just looking for something for regular range work. I still have time as I'm waiting for the paperwork on SBRing my AR-15 to go through and finish.

I had a Lee Progressive about 3 years ago and it was an "okay" press, not the most reliable though. The powder throw was in my estimation, finicky at best. I want something reliable, VERY well built, that like the Dillon I can add mods too later to enhance my reloading. So what are your thoughts?

Anyone that knows me knows I'm a nerd and I like making spreadsheets. Yes, I said it, spreadsheets. A while back I had made one to keep up with my 'stash'. It's fairly simple to use and easy to follow and I offer it to anyone that wants to use it. It's for Google docs but you should be able to download it to a OpenOffice/M$ Office friendly format.

You can find it here. Just view it and download it.

Right now it only has 100 lines so if you need more you'd have to add the extra lines and fill in the formula or just start another sheet(or I could just make more lines). For those with a really fast and constant turnover this probably won't be for you. ie, buy a hundred today shoot a hundred tomorrow. For those that are keeping a little extra around the house this should fit the bill.

It has an addition and dispense section for keeping tracking of ins and outs as well as an accountability section for keeping up with overall counts for a specific make of ammunition.

If there are any comments, questions, ideas that could be added just let me know. Thanks!

At home I don't have a round in the chamber.

When I go out I carry one in the chamber. Due to the commies in this state I now also remove 6 rounds from the mag... 10 round limit in the land of Premier Vladimir Malloy. So when I get home I drop the mag, rack out the one in the pipe and add that one and the other 5 back in the mag. I've been doing this for a while and the order of the bullets is all jumbled but I am racking a hollow point back in the chamber over and over.

Seems I saw in a thread here that this constant chambering/unchambering a hollow point round can damage the tip on the bullet. True or false and if true is this a concern that in a self defense situation the rounds may not feed properly or cause any other problem?

I'm considering buying another box (Gold Dot 147 gr JHP) but they're $1.85 a round $37 for 20 and if this is not really an issue then there's no need to do it. OTOH when talking self defense $37 is doable.

What'd you think?

My local gun range is a "Green" range and only allows Lead Free Frangible Ammunition to be shot on their range. For 50 rounds of 9mm they charge $28.50. I've never priced it out so maybe that is a fair price, but it seems a bit high.

I did some googling and I can't find anyone that has a factory Lead Free Frangible option for sale. Does anyone know if 1.) I should be able to find it cheaper than .57 cents per round, and 2.) Do you have a link to a website/dealer that I can purchase it from?

Thanks for the help I appreciate it.

I've been stopping in some local places like Wally World and Dunhams every now and again checking to see if they have any ammo in stock. The last month or two the shelves have been bone dry. I knew my LGS only had some fiocchi in stock but it was 17 bucks for 50 rounds. So today I decided to stop in my LGS and see what was new. Not only did they have fiocchis but remington, WWB, and American Eagle! Unfortunately they were charging $19.99 per 50 rounds regardless of manufacturer. Now I've been itching to go to the range and have refused to go under 250 rounds of personal stock so I went ahead and bought 100 rounds of the WWB.

I guess I'm just wondering 2 things.

Does it mean anything that my LGS had a few brands to choose from? Are we going to see more ammo on store shelves soon?

I know this 2nd one has been beaten like a dead horse; Does anyone know if we can expect to see prices stay this high?

How does powder choice effect recoil 9mm

My first reloads were 9mm AA#2 with 125gr. LRN. Then I got a hold of some WSF and loaded the same bullets with WSF. All rounds (with both powders) worked flawlessly from start charge to slightly above medium. (where I stopped and settled on about mid range for both powders.)
The faster AA#2 cartridges definitely had a much "softer" recoil feel than the slower/medium WSF. Even so, the WSF rounds felt much less "snappy" when compared to my Freedom Munitions factory reloads.
So ,as a newbie, I would be interested in more information as to how different powders/speed of powders, effect felt recoil. By the way I bought the WSF specifically to use with 147gr. FP but until they arrive I've been experimenting with what I have.
Thanks for any enlightenment on this facet of reloading,
