So my mind was all but settled on a XDM 4.5" .45 ACP but wanted to give the 3.8" compact one last thought. My biggest gripe/concern is regarding the extended mags for the compact. Any of you compact guys have any issues/gripes about the extensions? Does the gap between extensions and base of the grip pinch at anytime? Any issue with extensions getting hung up by your hand when teasing the mag? Any negatives regarding the 3.8" compact?

Looking to get an XDM .45 ASAP. New to handguns and recent rented the XDM 4.5" .45 and fell in love. Was at my LGS and they had quite a few XDM options. My purpose is CCW and home defense. While at the LGS I was able to get my hands on the XDM 3.8" .45 compact with grip extensions. Love the feel but absolutely hated the grip extensions specifically related to mag release. When I reased the mag with a full grip the mag will not fall unless I altered my grip in an weird way, it kinda gets stuck unless I tilt my wrist. I noticed in the website they have the full size 3.8" in 9mm and .40 S&W but no .45. Anyone have an idea as to why no love for the .45? As I have stated my reason for purchase is CCW and home defense. Only viable option I have would be to jump up to the 4.5" .45 if I want to avoid the whole weird grip with the compact extentions. Is the 4.5" getting too big for a CCW or am I over analizing things? I have no problem dressing around the gun and my state is an open carry. I guess I could get an XD but I really like egronomics of the XDM. Other than egro's what are the main difference between XD and XDM?

I recently red an article in The Complete Book Of Handguns 2013 Edition bt Massad Ayoob's review of SA XDS .45. In the bottom line section of the review he mentions a possible "deal breaker" for this model and most other XD pistols. He states " due to the prognathous nature of it's full length guide rod, if it is pressed against a firmly resisting surface at the muzzle end and the trigger is pulled, it will remain in battery and fire". He goes on to say that there are more autoloading pistols for which this is not the case and will survive the situation (therefore help you to survive). He states that "I'm continually amazed that SA does not emphasize this important feature in its advertising. In most cases considering the source I would ignore this statement. If anyone knows handguns and all things handgun related, it is this guy. I'm new to handguns and considering purchasing an XDM model this is concerning to me. Could someone explain this to me in a situation example? Is this something that would be a common hazard in CC or everyday use?

Hey guys, after posting on here that I decided on a 4.5 inch xdm many people got me to rethink on the 3.8 inch. I am just curious as to what others think and who have had an experience with either of these guns. It'll be my first handgun so it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm not necessarily looking for this gun to be a carry concealed as I'd more just go with an outside hop holster, but I would carry it and also mainly use it for range shooting. Any comments would be helpful.
Thx

so after a day at the range me and my glock buddy both field cleaned our weapons my xdm 45 3.8
compact and his glock 30sf 45, both pretty identical guns . the differences I noticed between the two I found interesting was the barrel was both heavier and thicker on the glock than my xdm , also even though both have nearly the same round count 300-400 his glock had practically no noticable wear rings on the outside of the barrel or the top of the chamber. my xdm has pretty prominent rings on the barrel and also on the top of the chamber from some slide contact as well as some light scratches from shells ejecting . all in all I thing the xdm seems to be built with closer tolerances parts just seem to fit better . and hell a little use wear on a gun never bothers me at all. also the plastic glock sights are a turn off for me . both are nice weapons but im still happy with my choice

Hi there,

I returned my XDSC40 to Springfield due to a chip missing from the locking block. I found it while stripping for an initial clean. It was purchased new. I did no fire it.

The pictures I sent to Springfield prior to returning are attached. The black and white wireframe image has an orange arrow pointing to where the issue is.

Springfield returned it to me without swapping the locking block and stated they "didn't see anything". I would have felt better if they said "yes, we saw it and it is OK".

I'm new to firearm ownership and am curious about what the opinion of this experienced group feels.

Is this an issue?

Thanks much.

Today, after about 24 months of regular shooting, I had my first squib round. I was breaking in my new XD9 Service pistol, so thankfully I was...

Today, after about 24 months of regular shooting, I had my first squib round. I was breaking in my new XD9 Service pistol, so thankfully I was shooting slowly. About halfway through a box of recently purchased, factory new Independence 115gr FMJ, I pulled the trigger and heard the classic "pop". I've always heard it described that way, but in reality it's more like shooting a paper-strip cap gun:

no recoil.

sounds the same.

a wisp of smoke rises from the chamber.

The slide did not cycle, but I dropped the magazine, cycled the slide manually, ejected the spent case and began my inspection.

I first ran a bore snake down the barrel; blockage. I then field-stripped my gun and took a look into the barrel. Sure enough, the bullet was lodged about 1/3 of the way down. I was shooting at Personal Defense and Handgun Safety (PDHSC) in Raleigh; without batting an eye the staff took the barrel into their work room and removed the bullet. Took about 15 minutes, and I watched as the gentleman (I wish I remember his name) used a brass rod and hammer. No charge, and no barrel damage.

Having a squib (safely) is one of the best learning experiences I've had since I began shooting. I've listened to the description countless times, but actually experiencing a squib is invaluable. I have no idea what the outcome would have been had I been under duress; say, during an IDPA match or intense training. During rapid firing I might very well have performed a "tap-rack-bang" and put another round through the barrel, destroying my gun. I can only hope that the experience has imprinted itself and I'll have the presence of mind next time to cease firing as I did today.

I've read on forums that the vast majority of squibs occur in handloads. Not this one, which means factory ammunition is not immune. It might be rare but it can happen.

By the way, I shot the remainder of the Independence with no issues.

Finally, I want to offer kudos to the staff at PDHSC. Of all the LGSs I've been to in the Raleigh area, the folks at PDHSC are hands-down the best. Their level of service, expertise and advice is without equal, in my opinion.

Hello fellow xd(m)ers! I'm new to the website and need some noob info. I will be purchasing my first handgun in a few months on my 21 birthday. I've decided on the xdm in 4.5 in. but caliber I am not so sure. My local range is still importing guns and does not have either I've shot the full size xdm in 9 and it felt great. I want something that I can conceal and also shoot on the range. Could anybody help me out on the pros and cons of either? I'd be grateful. I realize this is probably the 10,000 post on this topic but I'd like some first hand knowledge pointed directly to me.
Thx.

added: Ok, I know about the Peoples Demokratic Republik of Commieforniastan's thing on 10 round mags. Which at the rate this state is going will be a good thing, it sucks a brick here for our God given freedom of self-defense.
These clowns at a gun store in AZ are saying that they use different triggers with 'notches' Which I know is pure BS. My friend thinks he knows everything, just until I beat him over the head with the facts.

Hello, this is my first post on this forum. I have been snooping around a little bit before this and have found this forum to be very helpful. My gun is a 9mm sub compact.

I just got back from my range, and think i have an idea of what is wrong, but maybe the experts here can help me out. I recently put the prp drop in trigger kit, with the non competition striker spring. Not so sure that has anything to do with it.

I was shooting blazer, and had one stove pipe jam out of 100 rounds. But, there was a couple time upon the magazene being empty, the slide didnt catch open, making it appear there was still one in the chamber. Like the loads wernt hot enough to get the slide all the way back to lock position.

Then i switched to my lower power handloads i generally use for cheap target practice. 4.1gn of win ball and 115gr berry jacketed fmj. Each one of those stove piped. Every single one. This is leading me to believe that maybe my gun has too heavy of a recoil spring? What do you think? Iv only shot this gun one other time and had no issues that i can remember.

I love my XDS and also love Underwood Ammo!! Ran about 1000 rounds w/out a single failure, mostly range ammo and Speer short barrel 230 (my preferred carry load). Wanting to get a bit more velocity from this pocket monster, I ordered some Underwood 230+p (speer). Very snappy but manageable. Unfortunately, I have run it on two range sessions and have now had 2 failures in 4 mags. I am about to abandon this ammo and try 230 HST +p. The HST has some of best penetration and expansion in ballistic testing I have reviewed. Was curious if anyone else had run the Underwood and had experiences to share. Any input on HST also welcome.
Thanks

I didn't see a sticky for this kind of topic, so I figured I'd make a thread and ask the mods if a sticky is appropriate here. There's plenty of demand for these three compact carry pistols in 9mm, and I figured before the XDs9 hits shelves in a month or so, I'd create a comparison chart between Springfield's leading models.

Disclaimer 1: this isn't a discussion about caliber, so don't bring it up
Disclaimer 2: both the XDm9compact and XD9sc are compared to the XDs9, but not to each other.
Disclaimer 3: measurements not listed by the manufacturer are approximate and subject to heat, windage, mood, and relative position of the planets and stars at the time of your birth.

I bought a used XDM 9mm 3.8 compact that has a born on date of 10/2012 and has about 200 rounds through it. I was about to clean it and noticed this on the feed ramp. Any clue to what this could be? It seems like only half of the feed ramp is polished, the other half feels different too, just not as silky smooth as the polished side. Should i just take out the dremel and polish the entire thing? (i havent shot it yet)

Hi everyone,

I got a whole bunch of Tulammo Steel/berdan a while back, and gave it a try a couple of days ago. First few clips went fine, but after a while rounds were getting stuck in the mags, (not coming up). I tried to use the reloader to get them out, and even like that, it took a while. I had 4 mags, 2 of which had been in use before and two were brand new. Seems like this ammo is either non standard size or its too dirty? Wandering if anyone has had a similar issue before. I am not planning on using it anymore, but the problem is that I have another 800 rounds or so left...

So I split it up between them. They ask if I want to shoot some of their guns. Who wouldn't? The one that I've never even thought of was a CZ 75 Target. It was the ISPC 9mm model. It actually made me look good! So it was nice to see how the target guys lived for a few minutes. Moral of the story is this is why I love this sport. Friendly people sharing their passion with others!

Well the time is almost here. The day I turn 21. The day I can make my first handgun purchase and continue to follow my roots as a red blooded, gun totting american that makes most politicians tremble. I have decided to get an XD .40 S&W but I'm unsure of which length I should get. I'm stuck between the 4" and the 3" sub-compact. As I understand it due to the CA drop test list I cannot get an XDm or XDs so the XD will be what I have to choose from.

Intended use: EDC mostly but also home protection, training, and competition shooting.

*Basic list of possible deciding factors

4" XD:
Pros- Longer sight radius, slightly more weight to reduce felt recoil, longer grip for a better hold on the gun, longer rail for weapon mounted light and holds 10+1.

Cons- heavier on the belt, both larger slide and handle may imprint, and may reduce EDC possibilities.

3" XD:
Pros- Slightly lighter, shorter slide and handle for concealment, Can put a grip extension on the full sized mag to make a full sized grip, and the girl friend likes the "look".

Cons- Shorter sight line possibly effecting accuracy, more recoil due to less weight, and holds 9+1.

What I'm really unsure about is holster choices, carry options, and individual performance preferably from people that have shot BOTH firearms and can compare head-to-head.

I am in the market for a new 9mm, I settled on a rock island 9mm tactical 1911, while searching buds for some mags and ammo I stumbled across an m&p fullsize with a thumb safety, and started doubting my 9mm 1911 purchase, so I decided to give it 24 hours. The next day I logged back on to buds website and no m&p, so back to the ria 1911. While filling out the online Ffl info I started thinking about a sa xdm 9mm compact, had 1 in stock, no more searching, bought it instead. With little to no research. It's the black melonite, I have a 4.5 .40 bitone so the all black is a nice change.

After I sent my payment, I figured I might a well look at what I spent. $650 on, it's the 3.8 with the full size grip, not what I was expecting or looking for, filling a little let down I realized, there are but 3 things a man cannot have enough of; money, steak and Springfield products. A 3.8 inch barrel on a fullsize, 19+1 frame? I believe I made the right choice.

This is my first 9mm, never had or shot one always stuck with .40 or .45, I know it's a bad time to pick up a new caliber, but in hopes that ammo comes back, any ammo recommendations? How much does 9mm usually run?

greetings just got my xdm 3.8 45 compact last week , three trips to the range later I noticed that the polymer slide guide on the back right portion of the frame does not exactly match the back one on the left side. any idea if this is normal ? it almost looks like its not as thick as the other side , the gu. runs great was cleaned before shot , and had some clp on it at all times thank you for your input .

I added a.picture if that helps , the.left side in the.pic is the.normal thickness the.right side is noticably thinner

All,
I *should* be getting my CCP any day now and I'm considering either the XD sub compact .40 or and XDs for carry. Just looking for any thoughts/opinions from those who currently carry one or the other. I like the increased capacity of the SC .40, but it is a bit bigger and heavier than the XDs (at least based on the dimensions provided on the SA website). Obviously both rounds are plenty sufficient for self-defense, so I'm more interested in carry considerations. I currently own a XD 4" .45, so it's not my first go around with the XD platform.

Also, I'm intrigued by the .357 Sig as an EDC round and I've seen some people mention they have XD's chambered in that round. Is that just a barrel swap from a .40 or a custom order from SA? I haven't seen that round listed on the SA website.

I own a XD357sig and it's fun to shoot but I wan't to get a .40 barrel since the ammo is easier to find. After market barrels are hard to come by right now and have long lead times.
Is there any reason that the stock XD40 barrel wouldn't work in the XD357?
Any insight would be appreciated.

What is the rate of twist of the XDm 9 competition barrel? I googled it but came up empty handed.

I did some research today on the M&P pro 9mm C.O.R.E. and found that they changed the rate of twist to 1:10 to get more spin on the bullet to make it more stable.

Jerry Miculek did a YouTube video with the M&P C.O.R.E. and he was deadly accurate and fast even shooting steel plates at 50 yards.

Hey guys I was just wondering if you guys find a huge difference in accuracy from a 4 inch barrel to a 5 inch barrel? I have the Xd 40 subcompact for my EDC but I would like a gun to have for the range and just having fun with. I am leaning more towards the service model with 4 inch barrel but I'm concerned that I will not get as much accuracy and range as I would out of a 5 inch barrel? All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone

Although I've owned a couple of Springfield 1911s over the years, I recently bought an XDS45, and am very pleased with it. sent the slide over to XD-HS2000 for Truglo TFO night sights last week.

I'm curious about one thing in particular, though....what's with the angled magazine carriers that come with the gun? I understand the vertical, and have even carried mags horizontally on a duty belt in the day....but having the angle going in two different directions puzzles me.:confused::confused:

Maybe there's an obvious answer....but I'm missing it!

Thanks,

So yesterday I bought my first handgun. An XD Service model, 4 in. barrel. As I'm looking at the gun and going through the gear, I notice the spent casing from Springfield. I was I interested in the date fired so I would have an idea when the gun was assembled. To my surprise the date was July 2013.

I'm guessing they had many if these envelopes stamped in preparation and then due to the recent spike in sales they just began using what was available. Anyone else ever see this?
