I've been changing mine around 5000 rounds through my 9mm. I don't know that it is worn out but for the price I figure it's a cheap part to replace once or twice a year.

A spring will last ~3000 rounds. Once the gun easily shakes out of battery, it is time to change springs.

I'm new to the gun world so I'm not familiar with some terms. What do you mean by shaking out of battery?

When you slide is fully forward, the gun is in battery because the bullet is in the chamber and the firing pin is near the cartridge. Out of battery means that the pin is not near the cartridge, so if you pull the trigger, you just get "click".

The slide must be full forward and a weak spring can keep this from happening.
