Range Report XD40 and Don's 22lb spring and Guide Rod
First 2 clips, one clip with 165 grain and 180 grain factory ammo. Winchester Remington.
Second clip, last one failed to feed. That was 180grain. Cycled out of slide/chamber jam, put back in clip again, put in gun with slide open. Released slide, bullet get's stuck again, won't feed, slide partially closed. Try another bullet and other clip, with one bullet, same result. After that point, last bullet would fail to feed always. Now what? Need a stronger clip spring to compensate for slower feed and faster closing slide?!?! Put factory spring back in, works perfect like always. No real improvement in control with Dons rod and spring, of course I only shot 19 times with it. Maybe a 19-20lb would be slightly better and not have feed results. But, the lbs. is so little different at that point, not worth it, plus reliability an issue now. Stock doesn't kick that bad and doesn't bother me, plus I shot better with stock spring anyway. For sale, Don's Guide Rod and Spring, used for 20 shots. Will sell for $18 and I will pay shipping. Out... |

That is an interesting feed comment, and sound like a valid conclusion on the timing.
On the other hand the 180 grain bullets are usually the problem feeder in the XD40. I think that the feed ramp to the chamber lip is the usual cuplrit. Smoothing that transition go a long way to improving feeding, along with polishing the feedramp. For that price, that is a hell of a deal. I'll give others a chance to go for it. If there are no takers, I'll buy it for that (and no it won't get resold... I will be sending it away as a free sample for an appropriate party). Anyway, thank you for the honest review! I have no problems with individual perceptions/merits of the heavier springs. If you still like the idea of the one piece rod you can also just use the 18# spring, which should have the same slide speed as the stock unit and feed well for you. I think it should hold the slide in battery just a bit firmer too, but the difference is very slight with the 18# spring. |

I was kidding about the spring and guide for sale. I am going to run it for a few hundred rounds and see what happens. I think what you describe as the feeder ramp as a possible problem could be correct. It definitely shows wear on that ramp, and that is where it would get stuck. Polishing and smoothing that area could help with the last bullet. I am going to run it more and see if I can work out the issue. It did help some, but if I have to return to stock, no problem. Thanks |

I noticed
I was shooting some WWB hollow points to see how they would feed with the guide rod + 22 lb. spring combo.
I noticed that one bullet actually left a bit of lead behind on the feed ramp. It was as if when the slide moved forward it smacked the bullet into the feed ramp and left a bit of lead behind. I had no problems feeding, but I would supect that if i did not clean the ramp well, over time i could. My gun is nearly brand new so the feed ramp is very clean and very shiny (sp?) |

I had many problems with all springs - including the stock spring until I sent the XD back into SA with the 24# spring in the pistol. They tuned it, and it works perfectly with all loads now.
By the way: I've also switched to the 22lb spring after test all the springs today. (24. 22, 20, 18 ) Results: http://www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic.php?p=197751#197751 |
