Subcompact aftermarket guide rod?

I've been looking at the XD9 sub for a while, and finally picked one up last week at a gunshow. I know that guide rods are available for the 4" and 5" models, but what about the subcompacts? I haven't been able to find anything on it using the search feature.

I am of the the thought that shorter pistols have a narrower range of operation, and it may run into reliability problems. Well, that and I don't own a subcompact to do any testing on. So no guide rod is offered now. I am willing to send out prototypes if someone wants to try some things, but I have no idea where to begin on what spring to suggest.

The SC is a great little gun. It's lighter than the larger XD so you feel more recoil. I think it would be even better with a heavier spring. I'm used to my FN Hi-power with a 24# stock spring, so I'm looking for something around 22# for my SC.

I'm surprised that it no one seems interested in a heavier spring for the SC. Would you be interested in sending me a prototype and getting some feedback from me?

Yes, I can send you out a prototype, with whatever info I have come up with (dimensions for compressed spring height etc.) But, you will need to trial and error your way on finding a spring that can fit. The prototype will be plain steel, if you find something that works I will send you a stainless one. Thanks!

Nothing yet. Rodimus Prime is trying some things, but I am the skeptic so far (not for his work, just for the sub in general). Short barrel semi-autos seem to have a narrow window of operating and I'm not sure what will come of the efforts. Rodimus Prime has more faith than me (and he has a sub-compact to do some testing on) so the ball is in his court. Or any other intrepid researcher.

Other than the desire for change, is there something that says the recoil is bad in the sub? The reviews I have read seem pretty positive which is good for such a short barreled beast.

I find the recoil on the XD to be extremely tame compared to other subcompacts like the Glock, Kel Tec and Kahrs.

For those that are still interested, I've jumped into the mix of those attempting to develop an SC rod/spring combo. In the event that I succeed, the rod will be offered under the trusted Don's Guide Rod name. Updates will come as things progress.
