i bought a 16# spring for my 4" Service XD and it works fine. but what i just realized is that if you buy any spring for your dgr to go into a 4" XD which was originally intended for a 1911 5", is it really the correct poundage/weight? wouldn't it be tighter since you've already compressed it over an inch.

or, are these springs for the service model originally made for the shorter 1911's and then maybe the tac springs are for the full size 1911's. at any rate, i'm curious too.

thanks

With a 16# spring in the Service model, it becomes easy to knock the gun out of battery, either during re-holster or the draw. If that happens, no bang.

For this reason, we suggest a weight no less than 18# on the Service. The Tactical seems to do OK with a 16#, yet 14# starts to get sketchy.

Sorry, Don, for posting in your barn.

A 16# spring that may work for the Service/4" barrel for the 9mm/.40SW/357SIG models is the Commander model of 1911 spring. It should be OK to keep the slide in battery, but it gets marginal. This is a "try it at your own risk" area since it depends on too many variables to be an absolute endorsement. The risk is not damage to the pistol, the risk is that it does not work when you think it may.

This risk is ok for competition because when you lose you go home at the end of the day. For a carry pistol you need to stay well in the bell curve of operation because you may not go home at the end of the day.

The full sized 1911 springs should not be confused with the 1911 Commander springs. The full sized 1911 springs only apply to the Tatctical XD/HS2000 models You need to be careful in anything you read that you are understanding the difference in the springs. If you have any doubt you can post in my DGR forum or directly to me at guiderod@gmail.com and I will explain.

it's hard to say since my went from a 40 to a 9 plus the 16# spring. i'll go to the range this weekend and check it out. i'll try the gun with the stock guide rod and see how that feels relative to the 16# spring. up to now, i've only shot the 9 with the 16#. i use the stock and 22# with my 40.

i'll let you know. i'd imagine it would be marginal.

not to thread jack but you speak of a bell curve if the 16 is on the low end say >25% is the 22 on the high end or within the 25-75% area for a 9mm

My service would not function with a 22lb spring for 9mm(conversion barrel) but the 18 worked just fine.
