I will have to confess to being slightly inept.
I worked back thru a calculation and I think I have an error set into my spread sheet. In the Service models the springs go pretty much to solid height even after the clipping coils. We can't clip off too many coils or they do not do as well holding the slide in battery, so a minimum amount is clipped. The final spring force is approximately identical, but still technically less so I am wrong about the final spring force being higher. The spring becomes stiffer (rate of lbs/inch), but has less travel. I will have to check the spread sheet later. In the Tactical model (as well as full size 1911s) the springs are not going anywhere near solid height, and the resultant force at the partial compression with clipped coils is a softer force as glimmer31 indicates. The deeper the cycle the closer the numbers come together. Now for the liar part I wouldn't go that far. I may have had a bad day and taken umbrage over a tone that was not intended, so for that glimmer31 I apologize. |

Since I'm the one that basically caused this thread/sticky to occur I guess I will have to put my .02 worth in.
It was my inattention when reinstalling my spring that started all this. Don was kind enough to take the time to respond to my PM on a weekend to help me out. He says I provided the spark for this fix...hell, I think I was just an inattentive dummy and needed help! In addition to giving me immediate help, Don graciously offered to refinish or replace my guide rod for me...even though I had bought it from OS, not direct. He even offered to send me his prototype bushings to try out (y'all are gonna love them BTW). So, glimmer31, I can attest that Don's rod/spring combo does make felt recoil diminish, he makes a great product and provides better than great service. You've made your point that you are a brilliant person and obviously know more than the rest of us but like so many "brilliant" people, lack the common sense necessary to state your ideas and let the rest of the world make up their own minds. What you've stated may indeed be correct, but I doubt many of us really care...all we care about or know is that a DGR/spring combo does indeed change the personality of our XDs to something we like better. As far as making the springs "idiot proof" by closing both ends.....well, let's just say that guns and idiots are a bad mix. I'll sign mine: Chris Blakeley Vero Beach, FL[/b] |

Don, please read....
I accept your apology and recipricate, to you and all on the thread. I too am sorry I impuned your ability to make your product. I have been a Gunsmith too long and and Engineer even longer and must believe I'm always right. You springs and guide rods obviously work, I just don't understand some things about them and before I emperically judged your work (which I have no right..) I should have had all the facts. I certainly should not have done it on a site where you do business, or in private. It won't happen again. Don, I'm very sorry, I misjudged your tone and intent. Yours, --Glimmer31

Wait a sec I missed something. I posted on the link Don put on the FAQ But still... I put spring on backwards, and the person that said it looked so easy..I'll say when OPEN end was put on the correct way it appeared that the washer was askew from Uneven pressure, so I thought it must go on other way.. And lo and behold not able to take gun apart...The one poster in all his greatness knows it is so simple. Why not just send a small instruction with it? I called WOLF because there is a phone number, no such number for don ( but Don did answer email promptly) and the kind gentleman at WOLF said he would not recommend the spring I got for my XD. So a simple 1 page instruction sheet would of been nice, since I bought the combo deal It didn't say it on the web page description. Since then I am awaiting new 20lb spring. I will give it 1 more shot.
