XD-45ACP Service recoil spring R&D
I picked up a XD45 on Thursday, and shot it a bit today with a prototype bushing. I used a spring I had laying around that I think is a Wolff 22# for the Springfield Compact 1911, and my guide rod for the other Service XD models.
Shootiing the Winchester 100/pack ammo, the brass landed pretty consistant.around 1-4 feet off. I then swapped in the factory spring and it felt about the same, although the brass seemed to fling a bit further. I don't think the brass landings are significant, as these are the first 3 magazines fired, and it was not well lubed so it would be doing some settling in and loosening up for a bit. The factory spring measured around 23 lbs on a scale, but I was not being real exact with my measurement technique. Taking dimensions internally shows that we have a bit less room for the recoil spring than is present in the XD40/9mm by 0.073" The bushing I used is a bit thinner than my standard washers, so that helps but still only left me 0.013" from coil bind on the spring. A 24# spring would bind, and shouldn't hurt for short term R&D use. The guide rod head on my current rods is too small to keep the rod down and centered on the takedown lever, but it did work fine for now, and would be ok for those that already have one and want to do some trial runs. If you are interested in doing some playing with springs, I will send out some bushings for R&D. If you do not have one of my rods already, I will send out some (limited offer) for R&D on the XD45ACP , but you will need to try your own springs. If you are looking to go real low on spring weights, you will probably want to try springs for the Commander 1911 and then trim some coils. You will be looking to get a solid height of 0.937" or less. |

Don,
I received the bushing and rod. Waiting on a new stock 18# and a 22# spring to come in for testing to begin. Should have it by Thursday.

9MM ROD WITH BUSHING
Don,
We took the XD 45 to the range today, the set up was the guide rod by Don for my 9MM service with an 18# spring. I had taken a 20 lb spring but after 250 flawless rounds with the 18# spring, I saw no need to change to the 20#. The XD 45 was shot by several folks at the range as it was the first one they had seen--My wife and each of the fellows who shot the gun were very impressed--PUT ME IN-LINE AS SOON AS THEY ARE READY the Don's rod and bushing work great as is and I may just order as second one for the 9MM and not worry about a new one for the 45. The report is short and simple cause everything just worked dang perfect not one hitch--not one misfire of any kind--the XD hit where you pointed it. Impressed enough that 2 GAP's may go on the market.. BEST TO ALL Ron

Had my first outing with the bushing today. 150 Rounds with the 22# spring. I think the 22# is a little too tight. Function was not an issue. Of 150 rounds I had 3 or 4 failures to feed where the round just got stuck on the ramp. Pulled the slide back a touch and let her go and all was well. Brass was consistent in direction and distance landing a good 6 feet back. The gun was just not comfortable to shoot. It seemed to have a lot more perceived recoil with the 22# spring and it was much harder to get back on sights for followup shots. Racking the slide was a bear too. My next test will be with an 18# spring. Do you think there is a benefit to testing any lower than 18# with the 45?
