I did some spring rate calulations this weekend, and the numbers show that it should all be well. I can publish what I think the numbers are if some are interested.

I am finally doing what I promised.
The following suggestions for cutting coils applied to the .45ACP Service model only, and the purpose of trimming the coils is to keep the coils from impacting one another at full recoil. The coil bind at full recoil is not hurting the spring any worse than we already are, but if the springs bind then the forces are transfered direct to the takedown lever rather than the front of the locking block. rate/type: 12#/Commander coil count: 23 active coils: 22 actual stack height: 1.007 inch safe space: -0.066 inch cut coils: 2.0 new safe space: 0.018 inch new stack height: 0.924 inch new spring rate: 3.7 lbs/in new installed force: 6.5 lbs. new max force: 13.9 lbs. rate/type: 13#/Commander coil count: 21.75 active coils: 20.75 actual stack height: 0.936 inch safe space: +0.005 inch cut coils: 0.0 new safe space: +0.005 inch new stack height: 0.936 inch new spring rate: 3.5 lbs/in new installed force: 6.9 lbs. new max force: 13.9 lbs. rate/type: 14#/Commander coil count: 21.75 active coils: 20.75 actual stack height: 0.951 inch safe space: -0.010 inch cut coils: 0.5 new safe space: 0.011 inch new stack height: 0.930 inch new spring rate: 4.0 lbs/in new installed force: 8.0 lbs. new max force: 16.0 lbs. rate/type: 15#/Commander coil count: 21.75 active coils: 20.75 actual stack height: 0.971 inch safe space: -0.030 inch cut coils: 1.0 new safe space: 0.013 inch new stack height: 0.928inch new spring rate: 4.3 lbs/in new installed force: 7.9 lbs. new max force: 16.5 lbs. rate/type: 16#/Commander coil count: 21.75 active coils: 20.75 actual stack height: 0.965 inch safe space: -0.024 inch cut coils: 1.0 new safe space: 0.019 inch new stack height: 0.922inch new spring rate: 4.3 lbs/in new installed force: 8.9 lbs. new max force: 17.5 lbs. rate/type: 18#/Compact coil count: 20.75 active coils: 19.75 actual stack height: 0.966 inch safe space: -0.025 inch cut coils: 1.0 new safe space: 0.020 inch new stack height: 0.921 inch new spring rate: 5.5 lbs/in new installed force: 8.8 lbs. new max force: 19.9 lbs. rate/type: 22#/Compact coil count: 20 active coils: 19 actual stack height: 1.014 inch safe space: -0.073 inch cut coils: 2.0 new safe space: 0.023 inch new stack height: 0.918 inch new spring rate: 7.4 lbs/in new installed force: 9.9 lbs. new max force: 24.8 lbs. rate/type: 24#/Compact coil count: 19.4 active coils: 18.4 actual stack height: 0.967 inch safe space: -0.026 inch cut coils: 1.0 new safe space: 0.022 inch new stack height: 0.919 inch new spring rate: 7.0 lbs/in new installed force: 11.4 lbs. new max force: 25.5 lbs. |

Don,
Are these springs that you are having made or are they commercial like Wolff or ISMI? How much would it matter if they are variable or constant compression? Lots of questions but I am lazy and I don't want to repeat something that you have already done.

Commercial Wolff springs. If they were custom they would be right from the git-go.
Not variable, just straight spring rate. Considering that we need some extra oomph to cock the striker I think that a variable is not likely. |

Most of the delay now is allocating resources and judging where the market is going.
I have reloaded stock on the XD9/40 Service models with a stainless bushing, and laid out quite a bit to keep the pricing good (ouch, cut into my beer money). Within a couple of weeks I have coming into stock a rod for the .45 Tactical. It will be a pretty much a dimensional clone of the factory rod but will be stainless and solid so will add a bit of weight to the front of the pistol. Springfield obviously wanted to reduce the weight of the rod by choosing to make it hollow, I am taking the other direction of making it heavier to reduce muzzle flip. If the aftermarket spring makers do a fat spring that fits the factory rod, then the whole market will mesh nicely. Otherwise the prototypes for the .45 Tactical using the 1911 springs have good reviews and it is just a matter of getting parts made. My latest distraction was buying a CZ97B (.45ACP from CZ), and then deciding to make a stainless rod for that. That rod will be available around June 23rd or so thru www.pistolgear.com, and will be very nicely priced and have no delays in shipping (other than the occasional time from myself to Scott for his replenishing). It looks nice filling the gaping hole in the bushing and from reports on CZ forums the full length rod seems to help the spring life in this model. This is a very nice pistol and has a cult following much like the XD line (for the same good reasons). I think that Scott will be stocking the heavier springs for the this model too. |

Okay. But what about the SA XD 45ACP Service? I'm confused.
Are the Service guide rods available?
