Stainless allow would be very nice. I'm game on the Loctite as well. I think this is going to be another must have upgrade for the XD45 no matter how you end up making them.
I'm loving my 45 with it.

Sign me up when they go to production! Thanks to Don and all the testers. I have one in my 9mm Service and love it.
Having the bushing be a semi-perm. part would be kind of strange but cool....I'm sure you would have to ship out less bushings in the long run. My opinion of this is whatever you think is best. Thanks again for all the hard work everyone!

XD-45 Rods
Don: Finelly ran a couple hundred rounds with the SS guide rod and bronze bushing you sent. First was 50 rds of Speer 200 gr +P fmj with a 17 lb XD Wolff spring. Definitely need a stronger spring maybe an 18 pounder. Next was some WWB 230 gr fmj, same spring. Worked like a charm. Brass landed about six feet away. Next I think a Commander spring in the 18 to 19 lb range. The bronze bushing does get chewed up by the spring end tho',and I dont know how long it's gonna last.

Sounds like a s/s bushing and an 18# recoil spring may be the answer?

Today I set up a fixture to measure the stack height of various springs to try in the Service .45ACP. I used Commander/1911 model springs from 12# thru 16#, and Compact/1911 model springs for 18#, 22# and 24#.
Using the prototype bushing dimensions that I have sent out and my standard rod for 9mm Service (a compromise choice but ok for R&D), the only spring that would drop in is the 13# Commander . Safe trim lengths for the springs are as follows: 12# Commander: trim 2 coils 13# Commander: fits with no coil trimming 14# Commander: trim 1/2 coil 15# Commander: trim 1 coils 16# Commander: trim 1 coil 18# Compact: trim 1 coil 22# Compact: trim 2 coils 24# Compact: trim 1 coil After trimming you should have anywhere from 0.011 to 0.023" of free space which will reduce hammering on the bushing. Anyone got other springs to try? How are Glock springs for dimensions? Are they something that could work (may need a new rod diameter and bushing)? |

The only problem I've ran into was shooting 140 PF bunny fart loads with the 18lb spring. Had several light primer strikes. Switched back to the 20lb and no more problems. Lesson learned from the bushing for the smaller frame was to file back the sharp point on the spring tip. Only marks on the new 45 bushing is a couple marks from the spring tip and a light ring from the coil. I'll try some full power and PD loads with the 18lb spring tomorrow and see if any more light strikes.
Another observation was that there is quite a bit of fore-aft free play with the slide when cocked with the 18lb spring (19 coils) that is not present with the stock system. This also could account for the light strikes. I may cut one down to 20 or 21 coils to see if this cures the slop. |

Well, when you guys get it all straightened out and all I gotta do is buy the guide rod, bushing and spring (with no need to cut, tweak and polish), let me know.

R Dub, I took some good measurements this weekend and looked at spring rates for a bunch of springs. The numbers look ok for the 18# spring, but I didn't get around to actually installing them. I will do so tonight and see what if feels like on my pistol.

I cut a coil off a 16# Commander Spring and put about 200 rounds downrange. I loved the way it felt in terms of recoil but it was not as reliable as the 18# spring. I had several, 7-8, stovepipes which I never had with the 18# spring. Its a shame because if we could get the 16# to work well It would be my choice.

I didn't have anymore springs to cut down. But it appears that the lighter the spring rate, the more pre-load is needed to get the slide to stay in battery. Seems like I remember reading somewhere that the 5" solid rod systems need about 1/3 of the total length for good pre-load compression. Looking at the 5" springs that seems to about right. Don't know how/if this correlates to the 4" springs.
