Ran another 100 rounds through the 45 last night with the 18# spring and I think this might be the ticket. It was flawless. So much so I shot it in my Monday Night pistol match and had no problems. Now I'm dying to go even lower. Can I use the full size spring for the Tactical in 16# and cut it down or is their a 16# spring for the service I could get?

Don,

Any chance you will be researching the guide rod and spring for a 5" tactical in 45 ACP in the near future?

There is not a direct spring for the Sevice that is 16#, but I think you can cut down a Commander 16# and have it work. I have several commander size springs that I need to measure compressed length and then I can tell you how many coils to cut.

But the parents are coming to visit this weekend and I am cleaning like mad to make the house half way presentable so I might not get to it until Saturday.

I think the Tactical retains the same design as the XD9/40 line, so no custom rod is needed, and standard/full size 1911 springs should work.

So now that we know this works for the XD45, any ideas on a release date for Don's guide rod for the XD45?

I want to play with some springs a bit more, and take some additional measurements. I have my reloading bench set up enough to load on the single stage press and I have about a thousand sized and primed brass, so I'll make a wide range of loads from bunny fart to maximum to see what happens and get some starting suggestions. I won't cover all the bases but just enough to give some idea.
A couple more weeks for that, and some feedback from the prototypes and I'll get drawings out for production. I am thinking bronze bushing just like the prototypes for the slide.

A FEW MORE

Don,
We had a chance to run about 400 more rounds in the XD 45 ACP Thursday--we ran reloads at low power to Rangers 230 JHP--we had not one problem with the 18 lb spring at any time. My 11 year old granddaughter put about 100 down range with it and and another 50 or so with my KIMBER and she really shot the XD better--this was her first trip with anything larger than 9MM--not one miss feed--jam or any other problem.
I like the set up with the service guide rod and the new bushing just fine. I would like to have 3 or 4 bushings on hand, just in case--strange things happen during cleaning--and a rod for my 9MM.. If you would ship with an invoice , I would gladly pay for the extra bushings.

Best
Ron Johnson

Don,

Can the bushings be made of anything harder than the prototypes? The one you sent me has worked flawlessly but it does seem to take a beating. Gouges from the spring end. Probably not a big deal but wonder if after some time it would wear out from this.

Also, are you planning to make a rod with a larger flange to better sit in the groove on the 45?

I am partial to the bronze, but they could be made out of steel. That would mean a couple of additional steps to polish and harden and blue. but if I went with a stainless alloy I could get away with very little follow up work.
I think I will contact my Loctite rep to see if I can get single use type packaging to make the bushing a semi-permanent part. It would cure the loss issues and can still be removed with solvents or mild heat later. 'You guys go for that?

Ron, if you want some bushings right away let me know, otherwise I am reconsidering the material as indicated above and that might be a best fix.

A_Med, the final rod will have a larger head to fit in the locking block proper.
