24# and 22# springs

How do you know if the 24 or 22 is to much for the XD?

I like the 22# spring in my XD 40 Tac. Perfect reliability after a bunch of shooting.

Never tried the 24#.

It won't cycle, i.e., Failure to Extract and/or double feed.

Question for Don

I've had Don's Guide Rod for my XD-40 practically since you first offered them. I remember something about the width of the washer being a problem for those who bought right at first, and I cut a bit off the spring to accomodate that.

But I've finally decided the 24# spring is a little too much, and I'll be ordering a 22# spring. Is the washer width a problem with that spring? Do I need to cut some off again?

The 24# spring has worked just fine, no feeding problems, etc., after the first round is chambered. HOWEVER, chambering that first round often requires more effort than I'm ready to give at the moment. My advice is to go no higher than 22#, unless you work out a lot.

Thorander, the 22# springs leaves a but more internal room so you shouldnt worry about clipping any coil. If you send me your address I can send out the "newer' washers. They are 0.050" thick vs 0.060" thick for the "old" washer.
Pretty much the same experiance I had with the 24#, works great but a bit much to want to manipulate.

I am thinking about getting the Don’s Guide Rod and the 22# Wolff Recoil Spring are these two a good choice and how hard is it to put the new spring on the guide rod. I was looking at mine and I cannot figure it out. On the pistol-gear.com site they have a Rod and spring combo but I don’t know what kind it is and if it is any good. Hope someone can help. Thanks

It is simple to put in, basically just as simple as the factory rod with just a couple of "do firsts". Go here to download a visual: http://www.pistol-gear.com/tutorials.php. Click on the image.
What you see at pistol-gear.com is the "Don's Guide Rod".

Is it any good?

The stock unit is known as a "captured" recoil spring, meaning that it a unit that cannot be disassembled--you can't change springs. Don's guide/spring is non-captured, you can change springs easily for whatever reason you want or need to. Don's guide rods are a high quality product for the few dollars he charges for them, I have them in both of my XD Service pistols

There is enough decrease in muzzle rise to notice.
