Yeah seriously. Always confirm that your gun is unloaded even if you know for a fact it isn't loaded and you saw a round come out when you rack, you visually make sure and have that repetition.

Always brass check your weapon

And from what you just said, it means you carry your gun in condition 3. That is just not right. When you carry, you should start loading your gun. Otherwise, that few seconds to unholster and rack can mean the difference between life and death.

My God man, that's... holy balls. Frankly, I'm appalled at every level of that failure. Particularly, the failure of the parents to properly secure their weapons (seriously, as a parent who leaves kids alone in the house, how do you *not* invest in a combo-lock safe?!)... and then the kids for clearly never being told how to properly respect firearms.

I'm surprised at the lack of a newspaper article reading something like, "Father drags son to town square, whips child to within an inch of his life. Police applaud 'solid parenting' in action"...

Atleast you did the right thing and called the police on your on behalf. I know some people would try to hide it and get in way more trouble.

a couple of times I have had careless people I was hunting with point their muzzles at me. I said something to them, and made a point not to hunt with them again. Once hunting by my self in some heavy brush with a Marlin Lever action .44 mag rifle Hammer down on a loaded chamber suddenly the rifle discharged un expectedly. Fortunatly all I got was a ringing in my ears for a few minutes. My head was still in place and undamaged. All I can figure is the hammer got caught up on some brush, then the trigger also, causing the weapon to discharge. Lesson learned, and pretty cheap too. I carry it empty until in my stand and ready to shoot, I can quickly work the lever when I need to.

Good Post. I am not preaching because we all make mistakes, unloaded guns kill people all the time. I have made mistakes also and am still here to talk about it.

Frist rule All guns are loaded all the time. If I see you clear the weapon and you hand it to me, I will check it. Just a habit I have formed. Like putting on my seatbelt before I start my vehicle. Every time.

My most dangerous experiences have all been with ignorant shooters at the gun range. I have withdrawn from the firing on more than one occasion because of people using unsafe handling practices.

I had a the drunk friend of my wife over one night, and she was talking about how she had her CCW, and carried a Glock in her car. I showed her my gun, aKel Tec PF9, after unloading it. She gave it back to me, and I reloaded it. I then set it on the counter. I walked to the back door and was fixing something on it when I heard a bang, and dropped to the floor instictively. My wife's friend had shot our fridge. Fridges don't stop bullets, they are mostly foam.

I don't leave my gun out loaded anymore no matter who is at my house.

Reading through all of these I'm surprised with how many ND's are due to not checking if the gun is loaded. It's the first rule of gun safety for Christ sake. Come on people. The gun is ALWAYS loaded until you verify that it isn't.
