Since I've owned a gun, I've done the following dangerous things that could have either gotten me in trouble.

I used to drop a round directly into the breach of my XDM until someone told me not to do it.

I had unloaded my Mossberg once to clean and store. So one day I picked it up and accidentally pulled the trigger. I had forgotten to put the safety on and noticed that if this thing was loaded, there would be a hole in my wall.

I holstered my XDM once and forgot to completely tuck in my shirt the first time and could have had a ND because fabric was in the trigger area.

How does one know if they have a squib?

Had a thankfully unloaded but cocked .22 inadverntently pointed straight at my chest from 5 feet away by a young lad.

Wife had a ND shortly after she got her XD. Scared the crap out of both of us... but the barrel was pointed down range, no harm, no foul.

Typically when you have a squib round in an automatic there will be substantially less recoil. From my knowledge a squib round is usually a low powder cartridge which doesn't have the force needed to either cycle the weapon / push the bullet out of the barrel.

I had it with my XDM one time. To fix it...

1. Keep the barrel pointed down range for ~30 seconds to make sure everything is clear.
2. Remove the magazine.
3. Check the chamber for any non ejected casings.
4. Use a flashlight to shine down the chamber into the barrel with it pointed AWAY from you.
5. If there is a barrel obstruction take the gun down if possible and use a wooden dowel rod to tap or push the obstruction out.
6. Function test and check for damage before firing again.

Those steps should keep you in the clear!

Was sitting in a chair in front of a window in my living room when I was young and a rifle round came through the window and went into the ceiling.

That's about it though.

Back in high school days, and short on cash, there was an auction in town with cases of 12 gauge cartridges (unknown age). As young lads (2 brothers), we thought we scored a deal. Trying to recall, but it was close to $0.01 or less per cartridge.

Started shooting our mother lode with the pump, then we had a shot which blasted out the ejection port. Luckily my brother was behind and to the left of me, but our ears rang for a few days.

Lesson I learned: Never fire ammunition you do not know the age or the history.

Two weeks ago I was getting ready to goto the local gun show. I have a rule in my house, I never keep a round in the chamber. But the night before I had been out late at a friends house, I had been CCing. Well I get home, but the gun in my safe and goto bed. I wake u the next morning get my gun out drop the mag set it on my bed. I go and take a shower get dressed, and holster the gun. I happen to look down and see that the firing in indicator is back(I don't like keeping the spring under tension) so I remove the gun from the holster and pull the trigger. well I fired a .40 cal hydro-shock round into my floor. I live in an apartment complex, second floor. I called the police and tell them what happened, they tell me there is a chance im going to goto jail. well after they check the apartment under me, witch was vacant, and see there was no damage I was told that I got lucky and take it as a learning experience.

When I was 8 or 9, I was at a friends house. His mom had gone to the store to get something. His older brother and three or for of his friends were there. They were in jr high. So the mom leaves, and they decide to get into his dads guns. One of them held me down, while the others were pointing and pulling the triggers on various rifles and pistols at me. I remember being able to see the rotation of the revolver cylinder. When they had their fun they let me up, and I ran home. Told my folks. They called the other parents. I'm pretty sure the kids dad beat the crap out of him for it.

I think I had some luck on my side that day, none of them were loaded.

I think that is the first I've spoke of this since it happened.

Little shits should wind up in prison for such negligence... That goes way beyond stereotypical bullying. Do you know what happened to them years down the road?

The gun is always loaded. Thinking the gun was unloaded is a bad thing.
