A loaded handgun, out of sight, makes sense to me. A loaded handgun in a quick to open safe, makes a lot of sense especially if you have small children.
But a loaded shotgun in in a safe? I'm confused here. What good could that ever be? Your gun safe must be a lot different from mine. It takes me a couple minutes to open my gun safe. I just don't understand how having a loaded shotgun in it would ever help me.
We do not have small children, so we have a couple of loaded handguns stashed out of open sight, and a loaded shotgun, also stashed out of sight. I could get to at least one them pretty darned quick if I needed to.
The rest are locked in the gun safe, unloaded. I just don't understand why I'd want a loaded gun, locked inside a gun safe.
I ain't saying that you are wrong, but I don't understand.
Please explain.
Thanks,
Duane

What kind of safe do you have that takes minutes to open? That is ridiculously long.
A key, dial, or keypad style safe should only take around 5 seconds to open... Keypad being the fastest.

No problem. The safe is closest to my wife's side of the bed and if needed that would be the direction she would retreat to. She could then retrieve the shotgun and use it to back me up or simply get it to me if possible. The shotgun is not my first line of defense, but more of a back up and a way she can dig in. The safe takes about 30 seconds to open.

Of course it does. I'm not too lazy to have a 13 oz 9mm Keltec in a front pants pocket rig, unlike most people.

I keep my LCP on me at all times, even in my typical lounge around the house gym pants/shorts. I just use an Uncle Mikes IWB holster for it. At night I have a 12 gauge within a moments reach and lately my new XDM Compact .40 on the nightstand.

I grew up with and will always have a gun for every room in my home, two if the room is big enough.

The steel cannot be dulled, chipped or broken.
Its thrust is deep and causes agonizing pain.
Those struck with the dagger of truth
must come to terms with the wicked lies
within their heart and soul.
No matter where you run or hide, nor how deep you dig your foxhole...the big green weenie WILL find you.

Adyta,
Of course, everyone's situation is a little different.
My "long term storage" gun safe is located in the closet of a spare bedroom. It has a dial combination, requiring a complex 4 number combination. It serves its intended purpose very well.
To get to it, and open it would take at least 2 minutes. Plus I'd have to turn on the light to even see the dial.
Its purpose is not to keep my weapons out of the hands of curious children, but to keep them out of the hands of a thief.
Now if I had small children, or even had children visiting, I'd invest in small biometric safes for my SD weapons.
But that's NOT my situation. There hasn't been a person under the age of 20 in my house for many years.
So, for me at least, just keeping my SD weapons stashed out of sight works very well.
I know where they are, my wife knows where they are, and the cat knows where they are. It'd take a dedicated search for anyone else to find them. Fortunately, the cat doesn't show an interest in them.
Thanks,
Duane
