Drawing with your other hand

This is a discussion on Drawing with your other hand within the The Classroom forums, part of the Use and Training category; I am right handed and for the sake of setting myself up for success, I never refer to my left hand as the "weak hand" ...

Drawing with your other hand

I am right handed and for the sake of setting myself up for success, I never refer to my left hand as the "weak hand" because one day it can turn into my weapon hand.

Now I was discussing about techniques to draw your gun with your other hand and my buddy in his infinite reason told me that you really can't because a lot of holsters have button releases and you would need to take off your belt and even then, you'd need to take cover and you're screwed.

My buddy here seems to be very closed minded to how you can draw with your other hand and do it very effectively like what I've learned from watching Magpul.

I'm right handed and carry at the 4 oclock in a IWB CBST. If worst case, I can get it out and on target without too much delay. I practice it occasionally and could at least make the other guy/guys duck and run for cover or next county.

Train for it, use a hoslter that allows a weak hand presentation in an emergency. More important IMO, train weak hand shooting & loading & malfunction drills. It is more likely you'll be injured in the fight, not before the fight starts, but knowing what you & your gear can do is important.

You don't become a better shooter unless you can shoot more & you don't shoot more unlesss you can do it for less.

Either put your holster at the 1 o'clock or 4-5 o'clock position and practice drawing first.
I am right handed also, and totally agree with training your non-dominant side...

Well my gun is on my right side and it more forward because it does slide back and forward sometimes because I wear a paddle holster. I do train drawing the weapon with my reaction hand and I have been training on shooting and operating my gun with my other hand.

IS "reaction hand" the same as trong hand? If your paddle is sliding, yo uneed a better belt. Practice & proper holster selection is the right way to go.

It's a term I learned from Magpul. The hand that is has your trigger finger on is your "weapon hand", the hand that grabs the weapon first and your other hand that is called the "reaction hand" because it reacts. The mindset is that I don't call one weak hand or strong hand. It's to set myself up for success because one day that "weak" hand that you got so used to call might end up being the only hand you can use and you need to mentally get that weak and strong out of your mind so when you switch hands, the hand holding the gun becomes the "weapon hand."

The Blackhawk holster I wear only slides because I push it back and forth sometimes. I just need to tighten my belt
