Judging distance?

So I know i'm horrible at judging distance so i'm trying to improve that. I keep hearing people say, use football fields. The problem with that is that for some reason an open field (200 yard range or empty football field) looks different to me when out in the real world. Does anyone have any tips for judging distance? My primary purpose would be for judging distance on shots when hunting. I also think it could be a good general use skill.
I keep thinking about buying an inexpensive range finder and keeping it in my car. that way whenever I go somewhere I can just hit a target with it and start getting an idea of distance that way.....

Sorry if this kinda sounds confusing.....I tried to think of another way to explain it but I came up empty....

What kind of distances do you want to hunt at?

I honestly have never felt like I had to take a shot at anything farther than ~200 yards...but that's mule deer in Northern Nevada. I really don't know much about hunting in other parts of the country.

Due to the amount of trees/brush 200 yards will likely be the farthest I would ever have a chance to shoot, my .30-06 only drops about 2" at 200 yards when compared to 100 so hitting isn't that much of a problem out to 200 yards.
The main reason I started thinking about this is because I have started occasionally shooting in an old gravel pit and I have NO idea how big it is. i'm guessing it is 300 yards, but i'm not sure....

Get a good one if you go that route. I don't hunt but the problem I always ran into was that nothing was ever at 200 or 300 yards. In our matches the targets are 238, 312, 465, 517, etc, etc so being able to identify the difference between 240 and 275 yards is the difference between a hit and a miss. If you have a good scope with the right recticle you can range it using your scope but that takes a lot of practice.

As mentioned, get a good one if you buy a rangefinder. The ability to range through brush on a non-reflective target is what separates the good ones from the crap. If you don't want to buy Leica then a used Bushnell Elite 1500 is an inexpensive option. I've ranged non-reflective targets out past 800 with mine.

I think grabbing a rangefinder and practicing is your best bet.

Rangefinder.

Take an educated guess first, then check yourself. Do it all different places.

As an avid golfer I never had this problem. Crazy that golf could help me with shooting!
