Basic AR iron sight training

I have a Stag model 1 , bought gently used ....flat top upper a2 remove able carry handle and a2 front sight

I have no idea how to use this , been thinking of installing a red dot or scope something I'm familiar with , but I know these irons should be serviceable - and I need to learn them

I live in eastern NC near a huge marine base in Jacksonville - there has got to be somebody that can give me basic training in this sight system???

I'm willing to pay in one form or another , plus looking to meet like minded people

I'm not a retard , but the whole system with these sights seems confusing
I have bolt action rifles , pistols. Shotguns
But I'm Getting into more evil black weapon systems

Very easy to use. First step is to adjust the front sight until the thick portion of the sight is flush with the surface of the base. Next, center the rear sight. When you look at it from the top, there are 4 notches in the post, with a pin in one of them. Take a nail and depress the pin until you can rotate the post 1 notch at a time.

This is done by adjusting it to one side, then counting the clicks to the other side. I think there is about 70 clicks total. Now, check that the rear sight elevation is set to the 8/3 setting. The rear sight will be low in the carry handle.

The small peep is the one you will use most. The large one is for night use.

When you go to the range, start at about 25 yards. Adjust the front sight post until your elevation is good. Then adjust your rear sight windage. Notice the 8/3 marking on the rear elevation knob. That is for 300 meters in the lower position and 800 in the higher position. Your next step is to go to the 300 meter range and tune your elevation. If you have to adjust for wind, note how many clicks and return to the original zero when done. This is your combat zero. From 0 to 300 meters, you just sight and shoot. For longer ranges, just dial the rear sight elevation up to the proper marking, sight and shoot. Naturally, cross winds will have to be adjusted for with the windage knob.

On the M-16, the elevation is calibrated for 556 ball ammo. I don't know if civilian AR sights are calibrated differently, but your manual or the manufacturer should be able to confirm.

Focus your eyes on the front sight. Center the top of the post in the center of the rear sight, aligned on the target. The rear sight and the target should be blurry, with the front sight being in focus.

It certainly isn't terribly hard but it can be confusing at first. If anyone can teach you iron sight shooting it would be a Marine. That is one thing they are very good at. Try to find a local Marine who is willing to give you some pointers.

If you end up doing this alone, research "bore sighting" and first do a bore sight at 25 yards. I suggest a cheap laser bore sighter that fits into the chamber to give you a red dot on the paper. Align your sights to this red laser dot and do a group testing of three rounds at a time, adjusting sights to the center of the grouping each time doing this until you are on center target with all three shots.

Remember, sight adjustment doesn't work like you may think it works.

If you move the front post down, bullet impact goes up. If you move front post up, bullet impact goes down. When you move the rear sight up, bullet impact goes up. Move rear sight down, bullet impact goes down.

Move the rear sight to the right and bullet impact moves right. Move it left and bullet impact also moves left.

This is very basic though. There is a whole lot more to actually using iron sights at various ranges at which you are not bore sighted for.

Hey RR if you need a good range there is one off of 43 just south of Greenville. 150 yard range, the owner is great and it usually isn't crowded.
