Mil-Dot reading is.... interestingly COOL

So while my rem 700 sps tact is sitting somewhere in Houston's UPS hub, I decided to try out calculating distances using my Millett TRS-1 MilBar feature. Being a total noob I read on mil-dot.com and read through the manual for the scope on using the dots/bars.

Putting the power level at 10x I decided to measure the "0" on my neighbors house number from my room. I tried to hold it still....nope, my pulse was not helping. So I decided to just to rest it on my pillows and lay prone on my bed. A little better, still can see it move up and down from my heart beat trnsferring to the bed but I did get a mil of 1.75.

Went to my own house number and measured the 0 and it was 5.5 in (I really didnt want my neighbor to think I was crazy taking measurments at his house ).

I used this calculation provided on mil-dot.com: User Guide

Object size (in) x 27.77 divided by mils read, so......

5.5in x 27.77 divided by 1.75 = 87 yds

Also did their license plate:

6.125in x 27.77 divided by 2 = 85 yds

Also the scope manual said that 10x 1mil at 100yds is about 3.6in, so ummm was I supposed to plug it in somewhere, or is it just a reference?

I still think I need to work on guess-ta-mating the right decimal mils, also I really don't know the exact distance from my room to their house, so I'll have to try it out at the range.

I'm trying to take it one step at a time, but input about others expereince is appreciated!

Just worry about common object size, and the formula to get range. Also, make a distinction between yards and meters: don't do calculations in yards and have a scope w/ turrets (preset for range) that adjust in meters. Could mean the difference between a 200yd shot and a 200m miss.

Well in the TRS-1 they are 1/4 MOA per click...and I think there is a difference between the MOA and Mil turrets on different scopes right?

There is a difference between MILs and MOA. Use your mils to determine range and use the MOA to determine adjustments. Depending on the range, MILs are good holdover points/index for very quick, rapid firing. Regardless of what the math says about how many clicks you need to go between every 50-100 yards for your chosen ammunition load, shoot at each range to confirm. Eventually after you play with MILs for so long you will be able to either do the forumla in your head or recognize the size of the target in relation to the MILs and have a closer-than-ballpark estimation of the range, close enough to shoot on. MIL turrets are much more precise than MOA, but are also a pain in the ass if you shoot at varying distance.
