I too have a laser on my LCP and wouldn't be without it, I don't have one on anything else although I'm tempted to try one on my HK 45c. As for any defense attorney, what #1 said. As for showing the BG where to shoot, if you can see the little red light on the gun, you may want to revisit the idea of being in the wrong place. All of the neat lines that you see on TV will happen if you live in a cloud or have a dust storm going on inside your house (or a firefight), that said I don't leave the thing turned on except to verify where the bullet is going to go - then shoot, quickly.

My M&P came with CT grips; after working with them, and firing close to 500 rounds through the pistol with them...the CT's came off, and are staying off.

The main reason: when I had a friend randomly switch the laser on/off before I would draw and fire, I sloooowed down--a lot (over a second) when the dot didn't come on. I found I expected it to be there, I was looking for it, and not at my sights. I also found that if I was point shooting, I was faster to get a shot off without the laser than with it--again, I would look for the dot. Accuracy was equal with it or without it.

In short, I see no benefit to them. I strongly believe that a lot of folks who get lasers are using them as a crutch for lack of practice/training.

YMMV.

Good stuff.

You know that part where they say "anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law"? They mean it. Also anything you do. Or look at. Or have at your house. Or think about.
You wanna live worried about what might happen? go for it.

I'm just going to do my best to stay legal and stay alive. If I think a better trigger, better sights, better ammo, better grip, or shiny shoes will keep me alive longer in a situation, I'm going to do everything that I can legally do to stay alive.

I have a laser that turns on coming out of the holster..... And we just had a young lady pop the BG with a pink 38 so I don’t see how it would have anything to do with a court case at all. Lawyers will say anything about anything because that’s what they get paid for; they are hired to get their clients off.

a pressure based trigger like ct's run i would say is ok, but one with a switch like most aftermarkets or the S&W bodyguard comes with is bad. Reason is you have to turn the laser on to use it rather then just fire. If you have to turn something on that is time you could be spending getting away, finding cover or getting a sight picture for your vital shots.

I can also see people becoming dependent on a laser where they will not look for sight picture as much, so in a self defense senario getting sight picture may take them longer or in the event of a failure would make them more questionable as a shooter.

People saying it will give away your position to the BG are somewhat wrong, If you are sitting there taking a shot with a decent distance where the BG wouldnt know where you are then it isnt self defense. Only way this would be an issue where it is a good self defense senario is if you were in an almost blacked out room and it would give away your position. Most people I have heard talk about practical self defense shots say 5-15 yards which you can have critical torso shots with no sights even.

I say they are more a novelty item then practical, only optics/sight aids you need are for distance shots and for competition.

This is the most accurate thing said in this entire thread. Whether or not you would like to admit it, mostly because it is within your legal rights, if a lawyer can convince a jury that your having a laser (or silencer, or awesome tacticool lightsabre) is because you are a gun nut who wants to kill someone, it DOES NOT MATTER whether you are right or wrong. Once that jury has it in their mind that you are the crazy gun guy who want's to kill people, you are guilty. That's (part of) why I shoot with nothing but a light and sights. It's not worth the risk in my mind, plus, it's one more thing to fail when your life is on the line. I know people are going to want to argue this, so...GAME ON! -Hayes
