shooting to the left

Im new to XDs and I have to admit I shoot it better than any other handgun I own..It is a XD sub compact 9. At 5 yard my groups are under 2" but im shooting about 2-3 " left of the bullseye. Now I have to admit I usually shoot low nd left with all my handguns, and all have fixed sights.I have tried changing sight picture, grip hold and triger finger placement. only inprovement has been by using my tip of my finger on the trigger this has moved me over a bit. Am I pulling, flinching or am I just cockeyed..LOL. anyone have a suggestion? BTW my son shoots this gun dead on.

Low left is generally slapping or jerking the trigger. Flinching will also cause it. Since you are seeing it with all your guns that just validates that it's you and not the guns. You want a slow even press straight back. Focus on your trigger press and use the middle of the pad for now. Dry firing will help as will having someone watch you shoot. Dry fire in the mirror and watch yourself. Balancing a penny on the front of the gun is another technique used.

I dry fire frequently and am great with that. The problem arises at the range, I know I do things differently there. I'm not sure how to combat this dichotomy, except more time at the range? Unfortunately, ammo costs money ...

Get some snap caps. Have someone load your mags and intermix some snap caps. When you hit a snap cap you'll see what your doing wrong.

If you are right handed here's a chart to help.

Searching for advice I found this thread, I hope it's okay to post since I'm having the same issue. I've attached my target from last night in hopes it will get me more suitable advice.

Some particulars:

I got my XD-40 SC a few weeks ago. This was my third time out running about 50 - 100 rounds each time. I'm right handed and left eye dominant, shoot with two hands holding the pistol in my right hand.

From everything I can gather I'm anticipating the recoil too much. I know this in my head but I guess I'm having problems putting it into practice. I have to admit the pistol has more snap than I expected.

I got some snap caps to do dry fire practice (not sure they are required but figured could not hurt) I'm thinking dry firing and just more practice will help? I like the penny balancing idea I'll have to try that.

When at the range have someone load your mags and have them put a snap cap somewhere in the middle of the mag. When you shoot that mag you'll see what you're doing wrong when you come upon the snap cap.

That's a good idea. I've been able to leave a round of the chamber of my revolver to see what I was doing but never though about having a magazine loaded with a snap cap

I posted this in another thread:

Here is what I do at the range to get a decent 2-3 in group at 7 yds,
-Shoot a few rounds to get the jitters out of your hands, it happens to me when I get to the range and I have not shot in awhile.
-I also only fill the mag with 10rds just cause shooting all 19 rds at a slow pace does start to fatigue you
-Get into your stance, I use the the iso stance but modify it a little by placing my foot of the support hand side ahead of my left foot (I'm left handed)
-Take in a few breathes in the nose out the mouth to help relax the body before shooting.
-Bring the gun to the chest and punch out till the arms are straight, then back them off till you get to a comfortable position that is not too stiff or to flaccid.
-Grip the gun evenly all around, I tried to do a 60/40 and some others but giving each hand 100% grip does sound reasonable so that the recoil is not going to the path of least resistance.
-Focus 100% on the front sight and place it where you want the bullet to go
-Take a deep breath through the nose then slowly out through the mouth, then when you are about to reach the bottom of the breath squeeze the trigger to the back and hold it there and watch as front sight sight moves up then back down to where it was before.
-Once the gun has recoiled and is back to where it was let the trigger out til reset and repeat.

For me the breathing help relax my arms and shoulders vs. being tensed before the shot goes off. I also find that not thinking too much about how my grip and how much grip I should give and only focus on the front sight helps my trigger finger do its job w/o interference from the other fingers. I'm not a expert but its helped so far when it comes to just getting a tight group at the range.

Will try the "penny on the front" method -- hopefully I can get the group to move up and to the right!
