1- well worth it
2- In NC or VA, if the gun is not in plain sight, it is concealed. Printing is what will get you busted without a permitt. The deffence of "I was printing...therfore....it wasn't concealed", won't flush here. I can't believe it would work anywhere.
Printing with a permit? It can't be helped sometimes. Shouldn't violate open carry laws if it's not being carried openly.
Can you conceal w/permit in places where open carry is illegal, in your state????

I'd get it, and carry when not at work. My workplace doesn't allow firearms either, and I just carry when I am not working.
Your state laws are what are the key in determining what the issues are with printing, or accidentally uncovering a concealed handgun. But, as others have said, printing is not something that 99% of the people you see would ever notice, and in states I am familiar with, as long as it isn't fully visible it isn't something you can get in trouble for. In CT, open carry is legal (although many police seem to think it isn't), so even if it becomes fully visible, there is no charge for that. I have heard of them crowbarring a "Breach of the Peace" charge into the situation, but a good lawyer can beat it.
Bottom line, you need to know your state laws re: concealed, accidentally showing, openly carrying, etc.

Get a good holster set up and work at it and you'll be fine. I've had my shirt come off my ruger 94 before and no one even noticed, or because it was in a holster they all just assume naturally I was a cop.
Wearing a holster makes you look like a good guy to everyone.

Yeah I live in town, and when I used to take the dog out for a walk I'd open carry, and every one just nodded and smiled... Cops passing by would also just wave...

Get your permit, then hire a scary looking dude to 'attack' you when your wife is around. SHOOT AND KILL HIM! She'll love you forever, want more guns around and uh, wait. Nevermind.

Priority #1: Get your own car, even if it's an old beater. Depending on your wife to drop you off is so uncool and creates other problems. I realize that current finances may prevent this from happening right away but like I said. Priority #1. Solves the problem.

Sharing the car is not a big deal since her hospital is only like three blocks away from mine...she gets free parking, otherwise I would take the car and drop her off at work. Besides, I'm waiting for the 2009 Kawasaki motorcycles to hit my dealership, then I'll be riding to work.
I guess my biggest concern was that I couldn't carry at work, but I guess that's not a problem since there shouldn't be too many BG's in my laboratory. And if something were to happen, it's not going to be during the day at work, but in the evening or on the weekends, which would be when I could carry.
I'm sure it differs state to state, but what type of penalties are there for carrying into a prohibited firearm zone?

yes get your ccw.
if youre worried about printing. find a small 380 and a pocket holster. an associate of mine carries one in his back pocket all the time. you can not tell.
ya reach for that instead of your wallet

It is definitely worth it. I work at a University and I have my concealed carry permit. Of course I never carry at work, it's not worth risking my job and jail time. But as soon as I get off I go straight home and get my gun. I definitely think it's worth it.
In TN printing isn't really a problem legally. However, I sometimes find myself in a social settings where I wouldn't want to risk printing and my solution has been a LCP in a pocket or ankle holster.
