So, today my buddy signs up for the class, and tells me he signed me up too. I did say I'd take the class when he did it, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. He's been geeked since he got his SR40, asking questions about doing this. I guess it takes a couple months, but the process has officially started.

He's a retired cop, and has a range in his basement. It's cheap, my buddy found the ad. Sounds like it will be better than the average class, with some good training.

Be very careful with the legal advice he provides. Most CPL instructors and virtually all LEO's I've run into DO NOT properly know the state law.

Here's some questions you can ask him

With a CPL, can you LEGALLY carry into a school? Answer yes, but it has to be OC
Exact same question for a bar, same answer
Define a bar. It is NOT 51%, but majority of sales. This is a distinct, but extremely important point.
These will get him riled up, can you carry into a police station? Answer yes, unless it's a prison. Grey area of what defines the secure area for a jail, but the police station's lobby most certainly isn't grey.
If you are open carrying, say walking a dog, do you have to produce ID when the LEO stops to talk to you? Absolutely not, as shown in the recent Birmingham case. He has to have a reasonably articulated suspicion to legally "stop" you. Fishing exhibitions are not a legal stop. BUT, if you're conceal carrying, and he want's an ID, you gotta produce it.
Say you're out and decided to have some adult beverages, but less then .08 BAC. Does the gun have to be in non CPL holder transport mode? This is a strange one, the gun has to be either locked in the trunk, or locked in a case (most LEO's get this wrong and will say both), but it does NOT have to be unloaded.

Good luck, enjoy the class, and promise yourself to spend some time learning the real laws. Also, find yourself a good 2A attorney or two and get their 24/7 contact numbers.

Was talking to a friend at work today about CPL's in general. We live in Washington state, one of the most liberal states in the USA. What's odd is that it is very easy to get a CPL here. No classes, just pay your fee, get finger printed, and in 60 days or less you have your permit. You would think that in a liberal state like this there would be many, many hoops to jump through.

It makes purchasing firearms very easy to do as well because it eliminates the waiting period because all the background info has been done. You can walk in, make your purchase, and walk out the same day.
